The reliable way to choose a Pokémon costume size is to measure the wearer and match those measurements to the chart for the exact costume. Age labels such as “7–8” are only a starting point. For a child, record height, chest, waist, hips and inseam; for an adult, start with chest and waist, then check hip, inseam, height and weight fields when the listing provides them. Select the size that contains the largest limiting measurement, and confirm that the particular character costume is actually made in that size.
Why Pokémon costume sizes are not interchangeable
“Pokémon costume” describes many different products: short outfits, robes, hooded jumpsuits and padded or accessory-heavy designs. Each manufacturer and listing can use its own grading. Even two costumes marked for the same age may allow different chest, waist or height ranges. The children’s Disguise chart published on Target, for example, does not match the separate measurements on The Costume Shop’s Ash listing. An adult Pikachu listing also uses a narrower range than the general adult Disguise chart.

There is no single Pokémon-wide size standard or universal amount of extra room established by these charts. Treat the character name and nominal size as identifiers, not as a fit guarantee. Open the individual product page, find its measurement table and compare every dimension shown before ordering.
The five-minute sizing method
- Measure the wearer. Write down the numbers in the units used by the product page. A fabric tape is easiest; for a child, a shoelace or trouser leg can be wrapped around the body and then measured against a ruler or tape measure.
- Use the exact product chart. Do not substitute a generic Pokémon chart for a Pikachu, Ash, Charizard or other costume’s own table.
- Compare the limiting dimensions. For a one-piece costume, chest and height usually determine whether the torso can close, while waist, hips and inseam can stop a jumpsuit from being wearable. The chosen size must cover the wearer’s largest relevant measurement.
- Check the product’s construction. Look for a hood, attached feet, gloves, padding, tail or other pieces that may change how the garment sits or what clothing can be worn underneath.
- Verify availability and returns. A chart may show a size that the individual character listing does not offer. Read the seller’s current return conditions before removing tags or packaging.
How to take accurate measurements
Height
Measure without shoes, standing upright on a hard, level floor. The child guide from Disguise suggests standing in front of a refrigerator, marking the top of the head with a magnet, then measuring a straight line from the floor to that mark. The same method works against any flat wall: keep heels together, look straight ahead and place a book level on the head before marking the wall.

Chest
Place the tape around the fullest part of the chest and shoulder blades. Keep it level all the way around and snug without compressing the body. For adults, the published instruction is: “With arms at your sides, measure around the fullest part of your chest & shoulder blades, keeping the tape level & snug.” Have the wearer breathe normally rather than pulling the tape tight.
Waist
Find the point where the body bends naturally when the wearer leans to one side. Hold the tape level and comfortably loose. Do not measure over a bulky sweatshirt, and do not pull the stomach in.
Hips and seat
For children’s charts that list hips, measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat with feet together. Keep the tape horizontal. This measurement matters when a jumpsuit narrows through the lower torso, even if the chest measurement appears to fit.
Inseam
Measure from the crotch along the inside seam to the bottom of a well-fitting pair of pants. An inseam that is too short can pull a jumpsuit upward; one that is too long can bunch at the ankle or interfere with attached feet. Use the wearer’s usual footwear when judging where a costume hem should finish, but record the body measurement itself without shoes.

Weight and units
Some charts include weight, while others do not. Use weight as a secondary check, never as a replacement for chest, height or inseam. The Disguise children’s and adult tables state that all sizes are in inches unless otherwise stated; the Ash listing also gives metric and imperial values. Convert units consistently before comparing numbers.
How to choose a size when measurements disagree
List the wearer’s measurements beside the chart’s minimum and maximum values. If chest falls in one size but height or hips falls in the next, choose the larger size when the garment is a closed jumpsuit and then check whether the extra length can be managed. If a smaller size is required by the product’s height limit but cannot contain the chest or hips, it is not a safe fit; look for another cut or costume.
Do not average measurements or pick the size that matches the most categories. A single tight point can prevent zippers, snaps or hook-and-loop closures from meeting. Conversely, a large height range does not prove that the torso or sleeves will be roomy enough. Where a chart gives only “up to” values, treat that number as a maximum rather than a promise of comfort.
Borderline shoppers should remeasure once, check whether the listing’s dimensions describe the body or the finished garment, and contact the seller if that distinction is unclear. The available charts do not establish a standard ease allowance, so do not add an invented number of inches.

Children’s Disguise chart: representative ranges
The following figures come from the children’s Disguise chart published on Target. They are representative chart ranges, not a guarantee that every Pokémon character is offered in every size. Measurements are in inches unless noted; weight is in pounds.

Notice how the nominal age bands overlap or diverge by chart section. A child near 49 inches could fall at the upper edge of boys S, the lower edge of boys M, or outside a girls S height range, depending on the product’s cut. That is why the body measurements and the exact listing take priority over the age printed on packaging.
Adult Disguise chart: representative ranges
The adult Disguise chart published on Target lists these ranges. Height is given in feet and inches; other dimensions are in inches and weight in pounds. The chart’s three middle options all use a listed height of 5 ft 9 in–5 ft 11 in, so compare torso and lower-body measurements rather than assuming the next label means a taller garment.

The L and L/XL entries illustrate why reading every column matters: their chest and hip ranges increase, but the listed waist ranges are not a simple progression. Select the row that contains the wearer’s actual measurements, not the label that sounds closest to a conventional clothing size.

Product-specific examples: Ash and Pikachu
Children’s Ash costume
The Costume Shop’s Pokémon Ash listing gives a separate example. Its XS is for ages 3–4, with height up to 104 cm (41 in), chest up to 54 cm (21 in) and waist up to 56 cm (22 in). Its Large is for ages 8–10, with height up to 140 cm (55 in), chest 71 cm (28 in) and waist 66 cm (26 in). These “up to” figures are product limits; they should not be merged with the Disguise S, M or L rows above.
Adult Pikachu costume
The Costume Shop’s adult Pikachu listing specifies chest 30–36 inches, waist 30–32 inches and height up to 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in). An adult whose chest fits the general Disguise S/M row could still exceed this Pikachu product’s chest or waist limit. Compare the Pikachu listing directly and confirm what pieces are included before ordering.

A costume can meet a chart’s chest number yet feel unusable once all its parts are worn. With a hood, check that the neck opening does not force the wearer’s head forward. For attached feet or shoe covers, make sure the inseam and leg opening leave room for the intended footwear. A tail, padded belly or stuffed accessory may require more room than a flat measurement suggests; the published charts do not quantify that extra allowance, so ask the seller for garment dimensions when the listing is unclear.

A thin shirt has a different effect from a winter sweater, and a one-piece costume that fits over a T-shirt may not close over a coat. Do not assume that sizing up solves every problem: extra length can create a trip hazard, obscure vision through a hood or place knee and elbow openings incorrectly. If the larger size is needed for chest or hips but is much too long, seek a different product cut instead of relying on unverified alterations.

Availability, contents and returns
- Confirm the size is sold for that character. A general chart may show toddler, teen or plus options that are absent from the individual Pikachu, Ash or other listing.
- Read the contents list. Determine whether the price includes only a jumpsuit or also a hood, hat, gloves, shoe covers, tail and other accessories. The pieces affect fit and what must be worn underneath.
- Check the seller’s return policy before purchase. Note the permitted condition, time window, exclusions for worn or opened costumes and who pays return shipping. Keep tags and packaging until the fit is confirmed.
- Inspect on arrival. Try the costume over the planned base layer indoors, with the zipper or fasteners fully closed. Check walking, sitting, arm movement, visibility and bathroom access before removing tags.
Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Choosing by age alone
Problem: The wearer’s body falls outside the age band even though the label sounds right. Fix: Use age only to find a starting row, then verify height, chest, waist, hips and inseam against the product chart.
Measuring over bulky clothing
Problem: A coat inflates the chest and waist reading, while measuring over underwear may understate the layer needed for the event. Fix: Measure close to the body, then choose a product whose construction and chart can accommodate the planned base layer; do not add an undocumented allowance.
Holding the tape unevenly
Problem: A sloping tape produces a falsely small or large number. Fix: Keep it level around the chest, waist and hips, snug at the chest and comfortably loose at the waist.

Problem: The torso closes, but the seat, crotch or legs bind. Fix: For a jumpsuit, check hips and inseam as carefully as chest; height is essential for the torso-to-crotch length.
Assuming the chart is universal
Problem: A size that worked in one character costume is ordered in another without comparison. Fix: Reopen the new product page and repeat the measurement check. The Ash and Pikachu examples demonstrate that product-specific limits can differ substantially.
Ignoring “up to” wording
Problem: A wearer at or above an “up to” maximum is treated as safely inside the range. Fix: Treat the stated maximum as a hard limit unless the seller confirms otherwise, and consider another size or design when any key measurement exceeds it.
Printable ordering checklist

When to contact the seller
Ask for help when the page omits a key dimension, mixes metric and imperial values without conversion, lists a finished-garment measurement without saying so, or shows conflicting size information between the title and table. Include the wearer’s height, chest, waist, hips and inseam and identify the exact character and size label. A seller can clarify construction and availability; they cannot make an unavailable size fit, so wait for a clear answer before ordering a borderline costume.
