How to Choose the Right Nintendo Switch Online Membership Plan

Choose Standard Individual if one Nintendo Account needs online play, cloud saves and the NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries. Choose Standard Family when two to eight Nintendo Accounts can stay in one Nintendo Account family group. Choose Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack only if you will use its additional classic-game systems, included downloadable content (DLC) or Nintendo Switch 2 benefits.

Nintendo sets prices by country. The figures below are Nintendo’s published U.S. prices for 2026, so check the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Account membership page in your country before paying.

Quick answer: which plan fits you?

Plan Best for U.S. price listed by Nintendo (2026) Term
Standard Individual One Nintendo Account needing online play, cloud saves and the standard classic-game catalog $3.99 for one month; $7.99 for three months; $19.99 for 12 months One, three or 12 months
Standard Family Two to eight people whose Nintendo Accounts are in one family group $34.99 12 months
Expansion Pack Individual One account that will use the larger classic catalog, included DLC or Switch 2 additions $49.99 12 months
Expansion Pack Family Two to eight family-group accounts that will use Expansion Pack benefits $79.99 12 months

All four options are memberships for a Nintendo Account, not separate console licenses. The membership can be used on compatible Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 systems linked to that account. Family plans cover every account in the purchaser’s family group, up to eight accounts; they are not limited to people who own the same console.

What every Standard membership includes

Online multiplayer and other compatible online features

Standard membership enables compatible online multiplayer and other online functions in supported games. Support is game-specific: a membership does not make every title online-compatible, and a game’s own requirements still apply. Check the individual game’s Nintendo listing when online access is important.

Save Data Cloud

Supported games can back up save data through Save Data Cloud. Compatibility is determined by the game, so do not assume that every title, mode or save type is covered. Before relying on a cloud copy, open the game’s Nintendo support information and confirm that it supports the feature.

NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries

Standard members receive access to Nintendo’s curated libraries of NES, Super NES and Game Boy games. The catalogs are subscriptions: access lasts while the membership is active, rather than becoming a permanent purchase of each game.

Nintendo Music and special offers

Nintendo also lists Nintendo Music on a smart device and member special offers as Standard benefits. Nintendo Music requires a compatible smartphone, internet access, an eligible age and regional availability. Those requirements are separate from the console membership itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Expansion Pack adds

More classic-game systems

Expansion Pack includes everything in Standard, plus selected games from Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy and SEGA Genesis. “Selected” matters: the service is a curated catalog, not a guarantee that every game released for those systems is included.

Nintendo Switch 2 additions

On Nintendo Switch 2, Expansion Pack provides selected Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics titles and selected Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs. These benefits are console-specific; owning Expansion Pack does not turn a Nintendo Switch into a Switch 2 or provide Switch 2-only features on older hardware.

Included DLC

Nintendo gives Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass and Animal Crossing: New Horizons — Happy Home Paradise as examples of DLC included with Expansion Pack. The membership benefit is a license to use the DLC, not ownership of the base game. Nintendo says the full version of the relevant game is required, and DLC access pauses when the membership ends.

U.S. price comparison and the real cost per person

Nintendo’s 2026 U.S. support pricing table lists these amounts:

Option Price Effective monthly price What the figure represents
Standard Individual, one month $3.99 $3.99 One month of coverage for one account
Standard Individual, three months $7.99 About $2.66 Three-month term divided by three
Standard Individual, 12 months $19.99 About $1.67 Annual term divided by 12
Standard Family, 12 months $34.99 About $2.92 for the group One annual family membership, regardless of whether one or eight accounts use it
Expansion Pack Individual, 12 months $49.99 About $4.17 One annual account with Expansion Pack benefits
Expansion Pack Family, 12 months $79.99 About $6.67 for the group One annual family membership, regardless of whether one or eight accounts use it

Annual plans have the lowest effective monthly price in the Individual options. Standard Individual costs less than Standard Family only when one account needs coverage; as soon as a second account needs its own access, compare the family price rather than buying separate individual terms.

Family-plan break-even examples

The following arithmetic divides Nintendo’s published annual price among the number of accounts actually using the membership. It is an illustration, not a separate Nintendo price.

Accounts covered Standard Family: $34.99 per year Expansion Pack Family: $79.99 per year
2 About $17.50 per person About $40.00 per person
3 About $11.66 per person About $26.66 per person
4 About $8.75 per person About $20.00 per person
5 About $7.00 per person About $16.00 per person
6 About $5.83 per person About $13.33 per person
7 About $5.00 per person About $11.43 per person
8 About $4.37 per person About $10.00 per person

Nintendo describes the eight-account examples as less than $5 per person per year for Standard Family and about $10 for Expansion Pack Family. Your actual per-person cost depends on how many accounts remain in the group and how you divide the payment.

Individual versus Family: make the account decision first

Choose Individual when one account needs the benefits

An Individual membership follows one Nintendo Account. It is the straightforward choice for a solo player, a single child whose account is the only one needing online features, or a household where other players do not need membership benefits.

Choose Family for two to eight accounts

A Family membership covers the purchaser and up to seven other Nintendo Accounts in the same Nintendo Account family group. Each person continues to use their own account, saves and game identity; the membership is shared at the group level.

Family plans are annual in Nintendo’s U.S. table. Do not buy multiple Individual memberships automatically: count the accounts that genuinely need coverage, then compare that total with the one Family price.

Check the family-group relationship before paying

The people you want covered must be members of the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group. Being in the same household, owning the same console or sharing a Nintendo Switch profile is not the same as being in that account group. Verify the group membership on the Nintendo Account page before redeeming a code or starting a subscription.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standard versus Expansion Pack: decide by use, not by the catalog size

Standard is enough for the core online features

  • You mainly need online multiplayer in compatible games.
  • You want Save Data Cloud for supported titles.
  • The NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries cover the retro games you actually plan to play.
  • You do not need the included DLC or Switch 2-exclusive additions.

Expansion Pack earns its higher price only with regular use

  • You will play games from the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy or SEGA Genesis libraries.
  • You own or plan to play a compatible Nintendo Switch 2 and want selected GameCube – Nintendo Classics titles.
  • You already own the base games for included DLC, or intend to buy them, and would otherwise purchase that DLC separately.
  • Several accounts in a Family plan will use those additions, making the annual upgrade useful to more than one person.

If none of those statements is true, Expansion Pack adds cost without improving the features you came for. You can start with Standard and move to Expansion Pack later when a specific library, DLC package or Switch 2 feature becomes relevant.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online for Nintendo Switch 2?

Nintendo supports memberships on compatible Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 systems. The membership remains attached to the Nintendo Account, so you do not need to buy a second subscription merely because you change consoles.

Whether you need an active membership for a particular Switch 2 game depends on that game’s online features and Nintendo’s compatibility rules. Expansion Pack’s GameCube – Nintendo Classics titles and selected Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs are additional benefits, not a requirement for using the console itself. Check the game’s product page for the exact online and membership requirement before choosing a tier.

Term length, auto-renewal and the seven-day trial

Pick the shortest term that matches your certainty

In the U.S. pricing table, Standard Individual is the only option with one- and three-month terms. All Family plans and both Expansion Pack plans are listed as 12-month memberships. A short Individual term can be sensible when you are testing whether online play or the classic catalog will become a regular habit; the annual Individual term is cheaper per month when you already know you will use it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand auto-renewal

Nintendo says memberships auto-renew after the initial term at the then-current price unless renewal is disabled. If you do not want another charge, turn off automatic renewal in your Nintendo Account or eShop membership settings after purchase. Disabling renewal does not normally remove the time you already paid for; it prevents the next renewal.

Use the trial as a test, not as an Expansion Pack preview

Nintendo’s seven-day trial converts to a one-month auto-renewing Standard Individual membership at the then-current price unless you cancel it. The trial does not include Expansion Pack content. Set a reminder before the seventh day if you only want to test the service, and review the renewal setting rather than assuming the trial ends automatically.

How to choose and purchase the plan

  1. List the Nintendo Accounts. Count only accounts that need online multiplayer, cloud saves or membership catalogs. If the count is one, start with Individual; if it is two through eight, evaluate Family.
  2. Check the family group. Confirm that every intended user is in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group before selecting Family.
  3. Inventory the content you will use. Write down the classic systems, DLC and Switch 2 features that matter. If your list stops at NES, Super NES and Game Boy, Standard covers the stated catalog need.
  4. Confirm base-game ownership for DLC. Expansion Pack does not supply the full game. Verify that the account using the DLC owns the corresponding game and that the title supports the included content.
  5. Verify the console and game. Confirm whether the desired benefit is available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 or both, and check the individual game’s online compatibility.
  6. Compare the local price. Open the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Account membership page for the country where the account is used. Nintendo says prices vary by country, so do not convert the U.S. figures into a promise of your local price.
  7. Select the term. Choose one, three or 12 months for Standard Individual where available. Family and Expansion Pack choices in the U.S. table are annual.
  8. Review renewal before confirming. Note the renewal date and the then-current-price rule. Disable automatic renewal if you do not want the membership to continue after the paid term.
  9. Test the actual feature. After activation, launch the supported game or classic application with the Nintendo Account that should receive access. For cloud saves, confirm the specific title’s support rather than testing only the console menu.

Switching plans and common account pitfalls

Do not assume memberships stack

Nintendo says Individual and Family terms do not simply add together. An account already covered by an active Family membership cannot redeem an Individual code, and Nintendo documents restrictions when changing membership types. Check Nintendo’s current account guidance before buying a second code for an account that already has coverage.

Changing from Individual to Family

Plan the change around the account that will purchase Family and the accounts that must join its family group. Because Nintendo applies restrictions to type changes and code redemption, use the account-management instructions shown for your country rather than attempting to redeem codes at random.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing from Standard to Expansion Pack

Expansion Pack includes Standard benefits, so the decision is about gaining the additional libraries, DLC and Switch 2 additions. Review the displayed conversion or remaining-term information before confirming; the exact treatment can depend on the account and the purchase channel.

Moving between consoles

The membership follows the Nintendo Account, not a particular piece of hardware. Sign in with the covered account on the compatible console. Other local profiles do not automatically receive the Individual membership, while accounts in the purchaser’s Family group remain covered according to the Family membership rules.

Troubleshooting before contacting support

  • Online play is unavailable: confirm that the signed-in account has an active membership, the game supports Nintendo Switch Online and the console is connected to the internet.
  • A save will not appear in the cloud: check whether that specific game supports Save Data Cloud and whether you are using the account that owns the save.
  • A classic game is locked: verify that the title belongs to your tier, that the membership has not expired and that the console is using the covered Nintendo Account.
  • Included DLC is missing: confirm that the base game is installed or owned on the account, the DLC is one of the selected Expansion Pack benefits and the Expansion Pack membership is active.
  • A family member has no access: check that the correct Nintendo Account, rather than only a local console user, is in the purchaser’s family group and that the Family membership is still active.
  • An unexpected renewal is approaching: open the membership settings, review the renewal date and disable automatic renewal if you do not want another term.

Practical recommendations by household

One player on Nintendo Switch

Buy Standard Individual for 12 months if you expect year-round online play or cloud-save use. Choose the one- or three-month option only when you are testing the service or need temporary coverage.

Two or more players with ordinary online needs

Compare the $34.99 Standard Family annual price with the number of accounts that need coverage. Family is usually the cleaner arrangement when those accounts can remain in one family group and none needs Expansion Pack content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A retro-focused household

Choose Expansion Pack Family only when multiple family-group accounts will use the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy or SEGA Genesis catalogs, or when the additional Switch 2 and DLC benefits have clear value. If only one person wants those libraries, compare Expansion Pack Individual rather than paying for unused family capacity.

A Switch 2 owner who wants selected classics or upgrade packs

Start by identifying the exact GameCube – Nintendo Classics titles or Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs you intend to use. Those Switch 2-only additions can justify Expansion Pack; simply owning a Switch 2 does not make the upgrade automatically worthwhile.

Final decision checklist

  • One covered account: Standard Individual.
  • Two to eight covered accounts in one family group: Standard Family.
  • Need only online play, supported cloud saves and NES/SNES/Game Boy: stay with Standard.
  • Need Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, SEGA Genesis, selected DLC or Switch 2 additions: consider Expansion Pack.
  • Want the lowest recurring cost: choose the annual term when you know you will use it, and disable auto-renewal if you do not want an automatic continuation.
  • Outside the United States: confirm the price and availability shown for your country before purchase.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
