Which Makita battery platform fits your work?
Start with the jobs and tools you expect to use regularly. List the exact tools you need, then check whether those models are available in the platform you are considering. If you already own Makita cordless equipment, identify the battery and charger platform and model numbers before shopping for bare tools.

Makita Corporation’s 2025 corporate report describes its cordless families as compact 10.8V CXT, mid-range 18V LXT, and high-power 40Vmax XGT. Those labels indicate different platforms, not a promise that their batteries can be swapped between tools.

The product count and platform descriptions are Makita’s own claims, not an independent comparison of performance or value. Makita says its LXT Sub-Compact range is smaller and lighter while retaining LXT compatibility; check the dimensions and specifications of the specific tool rather than assuming every LXT model has that form factor.

Compare actual tools, not just voltage labels
- Tool availability: Confirm that each exact tool model you need exists in the platform, rather than assuming a similar model is available.
- Handling: Consider size and weight for the work. A more powerful family is not automatically the better fit for frequent overhead or confined-space tasks.
- Battery and charger investment: If you are starting from scratch, account for the batteries and charger you will need alongside the tools.
- Local ownership: Check availability, warranty terms, authorized service and replacement parts where you live.
The cited Makita material establishes platform positioning, but not a complete independent model-by-model comparison of tool prices, weights or performance. Use product specifications and local listings to compare the actual candidates; do not treat a platform label alone as proof that one is best for every buyer.
Are Makita 18V and 40V batteries interchangeable?
No: LXT 18V and XGT 40Vmax are separate Makita platforms, and the official platform descriptions do not establish universal battery interchangeability. Do not infer compatibility from the Makita name, a similar-looking battery, or a voltage printed on the tool. Check the exact tool and battery documentation before purchase.

There are specific compatibility features, but they do not make the platforms generally interchangeable. Makita describes ConnectX adapters for specified XGT and 36V (18V X2) LXT products. That is a defined route for particular products and uses, not permission to use any battery with any tool. Makita also states that a 36V LXT tool uses two 18V batteries; confirm the required batteries and setup for the exact model.

Check the markings on the actual battery and tool; a feature on one component alone is not enough to establish the stated pairing.

What should a Makita kit include?
Compare the complete contents rather than the headline price. A bare tool may not include batteries or a charger, while a kit’s contents can vary by model and market. Before ordering, verify:
- Exact tool model and part number.
- Whether batteries are included, how many, and their capacity.
- Charger model and whether a charger is included.
- Case or bag, if included.
- Accessories and other items explicitly listed in the bundle.
Compare a kit against the cost and contents of a bare tool plus separately purchased batteries and charger. Use the product’s exact part number to avoid mistaking a similarly named package for the one you intend to buy.

Regional catalogs are not proof of local availability. For example, Makita India’s 2026–2027 mini-catalogue shows model and kit breakdowns for that market; do not assume those listings, configurations or terms apply in the United States or elsewhere.

In the United States, Makita’s FAQ says lithium-ion tools, batteries and chargers are covered for three years from original purchase, with an exception for the ConnectX portable backpack power supply. Check the FAQ’s terms for eligibility and exclusions before relying on that coverage.

Do not apply the U.S. warranty statement to another country. Makita India publishes a separate warranty policy, and its terms differ by product category. Before buying, check the policy for your country, any proof-of-purchase or registration requirements, and whether authorized service and replacement parts are available near you.
