Choose a MacBook Air by deciding in this order: pick the screen size you’ll live with, select enough unified memory for the applications and projects you use together, then choose SSD capacity for the files you want stored locally. Before checkout, confirm that its ports and external-display support fit your desk setup. Apple’s current specifications list 13-inch and 15-inch M5 models, but do not identify a universally sufficient memory tier for any particular workload.
Start with the screen size you’ll use every day
The 13-inch MacBook Air has a 13.6-inch display; the 15-inch model has a 15.3-inch display. The practical choice is compactness versus more built-in workspace, especially if you often work without an external monitor.

| Model | Display | Battery capacity | Apple’s battery estimates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13-inch MacBook Air M5 | 13.6 inches; 2560 × 1664; 500 nits | 53.8 watt-hours | Up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web |
| 15-inch MacBook Air M5 | 15.3 inches; 2880 × 1864; 500 nits | 66.5 watt-hours | Up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web |
These are figures Apple lists on its MacBook Air technical specifications page; the battery numbers are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed everyday runtimes. The larger model has a higher-capacity battery, but Apple lists the same “up to” runtime estimates for both, so don’t choose the 15-inch on the assumption that it will last longer between charges.

Choose unified memory for your busiest routine workload
Memory affects how much work the computer can keep active across apps and projects. Think about the heaviest combination you regularly use at once—not just your most common single app. That might include browser tabs, development tools, virtualized work, and a creative project open together.
Apple lists memory options of 16GB, 24GB, and 32GB, but availability depends on the starting configuration: some configurations begin at 16GB and can be ordered with 24GB or 32GB; another starts at 24GB and can be configured to 32GB. The Apple specifications page does not establish which tier is sufficient for a particular person’s workload through comparative benchmarks. Treat the following as a way to make your own choice, not a tested performance ranking:

- List the apps, tabs, tools, and projects you commonly use at the same time.
- If that workload is light and familiar, compare the available entry configuration with your needs rather than buying a higher tier by default.
- If your regular workload combines demanding apps, large projects, or virtualized work, consider an available higher-memory option to give that routine workload more room.
- Check which memory options are offered for the exact size and starting configuration in your regional store; don’t assume every configuration has the same upgrade choices.
Match SSD capacity to the files kept on the laptop
Storage is for files and applications; it is separate from unified memory. Start by considering the local space needed for installed apps, active photo, video, or audio projects, downloaded media, and documents you need offline. Apple lists 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB SSD capacities, with choices depending on the starting configuration: 512GB can be configured to 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB, while 1TB configurations can be configured to 2TB or 4TB.
- Choose 512GB only if it suits the applications and local files you expect to keep on the machine.
- Consider 1TB or more if active creative projects, offline libraries, or other local files call for it.
- Use an external SSD for files that need not stay on the laptop’s internal drive. It adds storage for those files; it does not increase unified memory.
The MacBook Air has two Thunderbolt 4 ports with USB 4 support. Check the drive’s interface, capacity, and speed requirements against the work you plan to do; the specifications alone do not establish the performance of a particular third-party SSD.

Check ports and displays against your actual setup
Both sizes list two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, MagSafe 3, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple says each Thunderbolt 4 port supports charging, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 4 up to 40Gb/s, and USB 4 up to 40Gb/s. The specifications also list support for up to two external displays.
Before buying, write down what you connect at your desk: displays, storage, charging, and other USB devices. If the setup needs more connections than the built-in ports provide, a compatible hub may help; it isn’t necessary for everyone. For a multi-monitor setup, check the monitor’s resolution, refresh rate, connection, and any hub or dock compatibility against Apple’s display specifications.

Use this final configuration check
- Choose 13-inch or 15-inch: prioritize carrying comfort or a larger built-in workspace.
- Choose memory: base it on the most demanding combination of applications and projects you routinely use, then verify which tiers are available for that configuration.
- Choose SSD capacity: estimate the apps and files you need locally and select an available capacity that fits.
- Check connections: confirm the number and type of ports and the display support required by your peripherals.
- Verify your regional listing: Apple’s configurations and availability can vary by country and change over time. Check the live Apple store or authorized retailer for the precise model and configuration before ordering; the cited specification pages do not establish current prices.
