Choose by the setup and workload you need, not by the product name alone. An iMac combines the computer and display; Mac mini and Mac Studio are desktop computers that require a separate display. From there, compare the exact chip and configuration against your apps, memory and storage needs, monitor setup, ports, and total budget.
Start with the kind of setup you want
iMac: computer and display together
Choose the iMac route if you want an all-in-one desktop with a built-in display. Check the current model’s display and ports against your workspace and peripherals on Apple’s Mac comparison page.

Mac mini or Mac Studio: separate computer and display
These desktop systems pair with a separate screen. A Mac mini may suit a compact setup if you already have a display and input devices, and its configuration meets your needs. Mac Studio is Apple’s other current desktop family to compare when considering a higher-end system; the model name alone does not establish that it is necessary for a particular professional workload.
For either separate-computer setup, include the display and input devices in your total cost. Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications list the computer and power cord in the box, so do not assume a display or peripherals are included: Mac mini technical specifications.

Match the Mac to the work you actually do
List the applications and projects you expect to use, then identify the requirements that matter for them. Apple’s specifications describe configurations, but do not establish which model is fastest for every real-world workload or which chip a particular application requires. Avoid treating a higher-tier chip as automatically necessary—or any model as guaranteed to be sufficient—without evidence for your specific work.
- Memory: Choose a configuration that fits your apps and projects. Apple lists unified-memory configurations for Mac mini; do not plan on upgrading unified memory later.
- Storage: Base the capacity on project sizes and the files you intend to keep on the computer.
- Displays: Check the exact chip’s supported display count, resolution, and refresh rate against your monitor arrangement. A headline count such as “up to three displays” does not mean every combination of three monitors is supported.
- Ports and network: Inventory your peripherals and decide whether you need wired Ethernet, including a particular speed, before choosing.

| Model | CPU and GPU listed | Starting memory and storage | Maximum listed memory and storage | Connectivity differences |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mac mini M6 | 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU | 16GB unified memory, 256GB SSD | Up to 32GB unified memory and 2TB SSD | Thunderbolt 4 |
| Mac mini M5 Pro | 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU; an 18-core CPU/20-core GPU option is also listed | 24GB unified memory, 512GB SSD | Up to 64GB unified memory and 8TB SSD | Thunderbolt 5 |
Apple lists HDMI, front USB-C, and Ethernet configurable to 10Gb Ethernet for both variants. It also lists support for up to three external displays on each, but the supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations differ. Check the exact arrangement in Apple Support UK’s Mac mini (M6 or M5 Pro) technical specifications before choosing a model or monitor.

These figures are Apple’s purchase configurations, not a promise that every option is available in every market. Apple’s Mac comparison page lists the current desktop families as iMac M4, Mac mini M6 and M5 Pro, and Mac Studio M5 Max and M5 Ultra; it also includes older models. Quick Recap
Use your setup to narrow the choice
- Pick iMac if you want an all-in-one computer and its built-in display suits your workspace.
- Consider Mac mini if you have a separate display and input devices, want a compact desktop, and a specific configuration covers your memory, storage, display, and port needs.
- Compare M6 with M5 Pro Mac mini by the configuration and connections you need. Apple’s specifications show differences in memory and storage options and Thunderbolt generation, but do not establish that one wins every workload.
- Compare Mac Studio if it is among the current desktops you are considering. Apple lists M5 Max and M5 Ultra models, but the specifications cited here do not establish benchmark-based workload recommendations.
Make the final check before buying
- Write down your applications, typical project sizes, and required memory and storage.
- Decide whether you want an all-in-one display or already have a separate monitor and input devices.
- Record the monitor count, resolution, and refresh rate you need, then verify the exact combination for the chosen chip.
- List the ports, peripherals, and Ethernet requirements your setup depends on.
- Compare the complete setup cost, including any display and input devices, and check current prices and availability in your region.
