Reef tanks with photosynthetic corals need more careful planning than fish-only tanks, where lighting is mainly for viewing. There is no single fixture, setting, or schedule that suits every aquarium.
What should you measure before choosing a light?
Record the tank’s length, width, and depth, then mark where you expect corals to sit. The illuminated footprint and mounting height determine whether a fixture can cover the whole aquascape; depth and livestock affect how much useful light must reach those positions.

- Length and width: Identify the area that needs illumination, including the ends of a long tank.
- Depth: Consider how far light must travel to reach the intended coral locations.
- Livestock and placement: List the coral types you plan to keep and where they will be placed.
- Mounting conditions: Compare coverage claims only when they apply to the fixture’s specified mounting height and configuration.
Do not use a universal watts-per-gallon rule: the available guidance does not establish one. A long tank may need multiple fixtures or a bar-style light to reduce dark ends, while a deeper tank or more demanding livestock can call for greater output.

How many lights do I need for my aquarium?
There is no reliable fixture count without the tank dimensions and the specific light model. Start with the manufacturer’s coverage information for that model and its stated mounting conditions, then check whether it covers the coral-bearing footprint—not just the tank’s nominal length.
#1 Best Overall
- Features 445nm and 460nm blue, 10,000K white, and RGB LEDs, a higher ratio of actinic blue spectrum LEDs balanced with full spectrum creates the ideal color combination for the saltwater environment
- Comes with the day+night controller to adjust the lighting spectrum, simulate a gradual sunrise and fading sunset through the gradual increase and decrease of light intensity.
- One ClassicLED Marine light will support saltwater fish, live rock, soft coral, and LPS corals. For low light SPS corals, we suggest using two lights
- Available in multiple sizes and includes extendable brackets on both ends to accommodate both rimless and framed aquariums length 48 - 60 inch
- A glass or acrylic canopy is highly recommended to extend the life of the unit by preventing moisture from affecting it
When comparing arrangements, look for even useful output across the areas where animals will live. A single fixture may leave dim edges; several fixtures or a bar-style solution may improve spread, but the right arrangement depends on the tank and installation. The detailed EcoTech sizing guidance available here is for Radion G5 models, so its coverage figures should not be applied to the current Radion G6 range.
What PAR do my corals need?
PAR mapping is a practical way to check the light reaching coral positions, but it is not a complete measure of light quality or a guarantee of coral response. EcoTech’s 2020 G5 guide gives 75–150 PAR as an example of a medium-light level for an eight-hour peak photoperiod; it also says targets depend on photoperiod, coral species, flow, and other tank parameters. Treat that figure as a conditional example, not a universal target. See EcoTech Marine support.

Use a PAR meter designed for LED lighting when mapping a reef fixture, as EcoTech recommends. Interpret readings alongside the light’s spectrum: Kessil cautions that meters can be less sensitive in blue and UV wavelengths, and two lights with the same PAR reading can have different wavelength mixes. That limitation calls for context, not for ignoring measurements.
For a mixed reef, measure or otherwise assess the light field at several coral positions and place animals according to their needs. A reading at one point does not show that the whole tank is evenly lit.

- Full Spectrum: Feature 450 nm royal blue light, 460 nm blue light, 400nm UV, 460nm blue, 525nm green, 660nm red, 420nm Violet, 12000 K white light, etc. LUX: 6100; PAR: 128; Lumen: 1440. Vivid composite lights greatly promote the photosynthesis of coral and growth of marine fish. Effectively enliven the whole tank
- 2 Lighting Modes: Short press the M button repeatedly to switch between daytime and night modes. Hold the M button for 3 seconds to turn all lights off. Simulate natural sunrise and sunset to energize your lovely aquatic pets and give them a sound sleep
- 5 Intensity Levels: Daytime Mode (all lights are on): Press the N button to control the brightness of the blue light and press the D button to control that of all other lights. Night Mode (only blue light is on): Press the N button to adjust the luminance
- Auto On/Off: With a built-in timer, the saltwater aquarium light provides 3 optional lighting durations: 8 h, 10 h and 12 h (Only work during the first 8, 10 or 12 hours within 24 hours). Perfect for creating a natural environment
- For 48" to 54" Tanks: With an extendable bracket (min. length: up to 48"; max. length: up to 53"), the IP68 waterproof LED reef light for coral always stays steady above the fish tank. Work best on tanks with a length of 48 to 54 inches
How should the light match your livestock?
Choose around the corals you intend to keep, rather than buying for a generic “reef” label. EcoTech’s support guidance states: “As a general rule, SPS dominate aquariums require more intense lighting whereas LPS and soft coral aquariums typically require less.” This is general manufacturer guidance, not a universal intensity threshold. Read it in context at EcoTech Marine support.
In a mixed reef, the goal is not necessarily to give every coral the same light. Consider placement and the measured light field together, and avoid assuming that a fixture’s strongest point represents conditions throughout the aquarium.

How do you choose a reef tank LED?
Compare complete setups rather than judging a fixture by wattage, brand, or a single specification. Manufacturer product descriptions are useful for understanding features, but they are not independent comparative test results. The current EcoTech Radion product page identifies the G6; verify the exact model’s availability, dimensions, coverage claims, and mounting requirements before buying: EcoTech Radion.

Blue and white schedules both have successful use, according to EcoTech, which frames the choice around preference and livestock. A bluer-looking setting does not, by itself, establish better coral growth. Favor suitable coverage and stable operation over frequent color changes. EcoTech’s support guidance puts it this way: “What’s most important to remember, the way in which you program your Radions should be specific to your aquarium and your preferences.” See How Should I Program My Radion?

How do you set up a new light safely?
- Install and position it for the intended coverage. Follow the fixture’s mounting guidance and keep the planned height consistent with any coverage information you use.
- Choose a stable schedule. Set a repeatable photoperiod and spectrum rather than making frequent changes. The schedule should suit the aquarium and your preference.
- Use acclimation when introducing a new fixture or increasing intensity. EcoTech recommends acclimation mode for its Radion guidance; use the feature and instructions applicable to your light.
- Monitor livestock and make small changes. Allow time for animals to adjust, observe their response, and avoid copying another aquarium’s intensity percentage unless the fixture, mounting height, tank dimensions, and livestock are genuinely comparable.
What about a fish-only aquarium?
For a fish-only tank, lighting is primarily for viewing, so choose a fixture that covers the display and gives an appearance you like. Coral PAR targets and coral-oriented intensity guidance are not the main selection criteria when the aquarium has no photosynthetic corals.
