A signature is a clue, not proof. State the artist and date only as precisely as the evidence allows; without details or an image of a particular painting, no specific attribution can be made.
Start with the painting and what you already know
Begin with clues you can record without altering the work. The Smithsonian American Art Museum recommends starting with what is known, rather than jumping to an attribution. Write down the subject, any likely place or approximate date, its style, how long it has been in the family, and what a seller or previous owner said. Ask relatives who may remember its history, and check family papers.

Photograph the front and back. Include the frame, labels, stamps, inscriptions, and any visible signature. Measure the painted area separately from the full support, such as the canvas or panel, if possible. These observations give you details to compare with collection and archival records.

What does a signature or mark tell you?
Transcribe a signature exactly as it appears and record where it sits on the painting. If the name or initials are difficult to read, a signature or monogram reference can help generate possibilities. The Smithsonian lists John Castagno’s American Artists: Signatures and Monograms, 1800–1989 as one such reference. Use a match to guide further research, not to settle authorship.

A name on a painting may have been added by a previous owner rather than by the artist. Even a plausible signature match needs to agree with other evidence, such as the painting’s subject, style, dimensions, materials, and history.

Trace the painting’s ownership and exhibition history
Ask family members and previous owners about receipts, letters, photographs, estate inventories, and dealer paperwork. Then compare the work with museum collection catalogs, exhibition catalogs, auction indexes, catalogues raisonnés, and archival records. A documented exhibition or an old catalog entry may connect a painting to a title, owner, or date.
Records can be incomplete, and a work’s title or recorded dimensions may change over time. Treat a possible match as stronger when several details agree, rather than relying on a shared title or one similar measurement.

Compare candidates across independent evidence
Museum catalog records show how attribution is supported by more than a signature. The National Gallery of Art’s catalog conventions bring together information such as attribution, date, medium, dimensions, provenance, technical notes, and bibliography. When you compare a candidate artist or date, check whether the independent clues converge:
Rank #4
- Signature form and placement, if present.
- Subject and stylistic features compared with documented works.
- Material and support compatibility.
- Ownership and exhibition chronology.
- Whether the proposed date fits the artist’s active period.
A visual resemblance or a name match alone is weaker than agreement among these different kinds of evidence.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is professional examination useful?
Professional examination can help answer a defined question about materials or construction—for example, whether the physical evidence is compatible with a proposed date. It may rule out a candidate if the painting could not have been made during that artist’s active life. Scientific findings do not, by themselves, establish who made the work; they must be interpreted alongside art-historical and documentary evidence.

Do not clean or repair a potentially important painting as an identification step. Ask a trained conservator to assess it. The Smithsonian’s art-research guidance notes that a local museum, gallery, or historical society may help you find a reputable conservator.

How should you state the artist and date?
Separate direct observations from conclusions. For example, “signed” describes a feature on the object; it does not by itself prove authorship. Attribution terms should reflect the evidence: the National Gallery of Art uses “Attributed to” when uncertainty surrounds the attribution. Other qualified descriptions, such as “workshop of,” “circle of,” or “possibly by,” should likewise be used only when justified by the available evidence.

In its catalog conventions, the National Gallery of Art distinguishes a specific year from an approximate date marked “c.” and from date ranges. Keep that uncertainty visible rather than converting an estimate into a firm date.
