How to choose the right Hyundai electric car for Indian driving and charging needs

For most Indian buyers, start with the Hyundai CRETA Electric. It is the lower-cost, everyday SUV choice, offers 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh battery options, and can be charged at home from a 7.4 kW wallbox. Choose the IONIQ 5 instead when its premium price is justified by the larger 84.0 kWh battery, up to 690 km ARAI-certified range and faster long-distance charging.

The right decision depends less on the headline range than on your parking, electricity supply, daily distance, highway routes, financing and tolerance for public-charging stops. Hyundai’s prices, trims, range certifications and charging-network availability can change, so verify the current brochure and variant details before paying a booking amount.

The quick decision: which Hyundai EV fits your use?

Choose this Why it fits Important checks
CRETA Electric 42 kWh Lower entry cost and a practical SUV format for regular city use Confirm that its certified range and your planned highway routes leave a comfortable charging margin
CRETA Electric 51.4 kWh More range without moving to the IONIQ 5’s premium price bracket Check the exact variant’s published certification figure; Hyundai materials currently show different long-range numbers
IONIQ 5 Premium comfort and technology, a much larger battery and fewer charging stops on long routes Its starting price is substantially higher, and you still need dependable charging where you live and travel

Hyundai’s India electric-car page lists the CRETA Electric from ₹18,02,200 and the IONIQ 5 from ₹55,70,000. These are listed starting prices, not a promise that every trim, tax, registration charge or insurance cost will be included. Confirm the on-road quotation for your state and the exact model year.

What Hyundai currently sells in India

CRETA Electric: the mainstream choice

Hyundai positions the CRETA Electric as an everyday electric SUV. The car is offered with 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh batteries. Hyundai’s ownership material gives ARAI-certified ranges of 420 km for the 42 kWh battery and 510 km for the 51.4 kWh battery. A separate Hyundai buying guide states up to 473 km for the long-range configuration. Those figures should not be treated as interchangeable: they may refer to different variants, model years or certification contexts. Read the current brochure for the exact trim you are ordering and record the stated test-cycle figure on your quotation.

The CRETA Electric is the sensible starting point when your normal travel is urban or suburban, you can charge overnight, and you want an SUV footprint without paying for the IONIQ 5’s larger battery and premium equipment. The 42 kWh version can be enough for a predictable commute. The 51.4 kWh version is the better buffer if you regularly drive beyond the city, carry passengers or prefer fewer public-charging stops.

IONIQ 5: the premium long-distance alternative

The current Hyundai release for India describes an updated IONIQ 5 with an 84.0 kWh battery and up to 690 km ARAI-certified range. That is the figure to use when discussing the current model. Hyundai’s earlier buying material described a 72.6 kWh specification and approximately 18-minute 10–80% DC charging on a 350 kW charger; regard that as a prior specification, not the current battery description.

The IONIQ 5 is Hyundai’s premium E-GMP model. Its case is strongest for buyers who value a larger cabin experience, higher equipment levels, connected features, safety technology and rapid DC charging, and who can absorb a starting price of ₹55,70,000. The larger battery can reduce the number of charging stops on intercity journeys, but it does not remove the need to check charger locations, connector compatibility or site reliability.

Start with your real driving pattern, not the brochure maximum

Write down your actual weekly use before comparing models. Separate routine kilometres from occasional highway trips. A car that covers the commute comfortably may still be inconvenient if your family makes frequent intercity journeys on routes with sparse or unreliable chargers.

Measure daily energy needs

  1. Record your average weekday distance and your longest normal day.
  2. Note how often you carry a full passenger load, luggage or roof-mounted equipment.
  3. Mark the roads where you drive fastest; speed, traffic, gradients, temperature and air-conditioning use all affect consumption.
  4. Identify whether you can plug in every night or only at a workplace or public site.

Use the certified range as a comparison point, not as a guaranteed distance between charges. Plan with a reserve rather than arriving at a charger at a very low state of charge. The reserve you need depends on the route, weather, traffic, payload and the reliability of the next charging site.

When the smaller CRETA battery is enough

The 42 kWh CRETA Electric makes sense when most days are short, charging is available at home, and your occasional long trips have dependable DC chargers. Its 420 km ARAI figure is a laboratory certification value associated with Hyundai’s ownership material; it is not a promise of 420 km in every Indian driving condition.

When to choose the 51.4 kWh CRETA

Pay for the larger CRETA battery when the additional range protects you from frequent public-charging stops, your daily distance is high, or your regular routes include stretches with few chargers. Compare the price difference with your expected ownership period and annual kilometres. Do not select it solely because one document says 510 km and another says 473 km; first establish which number applies to the precise variant and model year.

When the IONIQ 5’s battery changes the decision

The IONIQ 5’s 84.0 kWh pack and up to 690 km ARAI-certified range can materially reduce stops on long journeys for drivers whose routes and charging access support that capability. The financial premium is difficult to justify if most of your driving is a short commute and you already have reliable overnight charging. It becomes easier to justify when long-distance comfort, a larger battery and high-speed charging are central requirements rather than occasional bonuses.

Home charging: the infrastructure decision to make first

Convenient EV ownership usually begins with a dependable place to charge overnight. Hyundai’s CRETA Electric specification lists 7.4 kW AC charging. Estimated 10–100% home-charging times are about six hours or seven hours 15 minutes, depending on configuration. Hyundai’s battery-as-a-service (BaaS) release says Home Charger variants include a 7.4 kW wallbox charger.

Check your parking and electrical supply before ordering

  • Obtain written permission if your parking space is in an apartment or managed complex.
  • Ask an electrician to verify sanctioned load, earthing, protective devices and the route for the charging cable.
  • Confirm whether the charger can be mounted close enough to the parking bay without unsafe extension wiring.
  • Ask who pays for installation, electrical upgrades, maintenance and relocation if you move.
  • Match the connector and electrical specifications to the exact Hyundai variant and wallbox supplied.

A 7.4 kW charger does not mean the car will always draw 7.4 kW. The vehicle controls charging according to its onboard charger, battery temperature and state of charge. The published six-hour and seven-hour-15-minute estimates are useful planning figures for a 10–100% session, not a guarantee for every household or every charging event.

What if home charging is unavailable?

Without a reliable overnight socket or wallbox, evaluate workplace and public charging before choosing either Hyundai. Public charging can work, but it adds detours, waiting time and exposure to occupied or unavailable chargers. Check the myHyundai app around your home, office and common routes. Hyundai says its myHyundai EV Charge service can locate and use more than 28,000 charging points in India; network counts and access are time-sensitive, so check the live app and the operator’s current status.

Public DC charging and highway planning

Hyundai’s ownership release states that the CRETA Electric can charge from 10% to 80% in about 39 minutes. That is a stated charging estimate for the specified session, not the time to fill the battery from empty to full. Charging speed usually tapers as the battery becomes nearly full, which is why an 80% stop is often more time-efficient than waiting for 100%.

Plan each trip in advance

  1. Enter the complete route, including detours, elevation changes and the return distance if you cannot charge at the destination.
  2. Locate a compatible DC charger before the battery reaches a low state of charge.
  3. Check the connector type, advertised power, operating hours, payment method and recent availability in the app or at the site.
  4. Choose a backup charger within practical reach in case the first unit is occupied or out of service.
  5. Allow extra time for queues, traffic near the charger and slower charging in extreme heat or cold.

For the IONIQ 5, verify that the charger can deliver the power the car can use. Hyundai’s earlier material cited approximately 18 minutes for 10–80% on a 350 kW charger for the prior 72.6 kWh specification. That figure should not be applied automatically to the current 84.0 kWh model or to lower-power stations. The actual session depends on the charger, battery temperature, starting state of charge and site load.

Do not confuse network size with route certainty

A headline count of more than 28,000 charging points indicates broad discoverability, not a guarantee that every point is operational, conveniently located or suitable for your connector. Before a highway trip, open the live listing, inspect recent status information and keep a backup plan. Drivers who cannot charge at home should perform this check for their regular routes, not only for holiday travel.

How Hyundai BaaS changes the ownership calculation

Hyundai announced CRETA Electric BaaS with a starting vehicle price of ₹10.99 lakh and battery EMI starting at ₹3.9 per kilometre. The lower initial price comes with a distance-linked battery payment, so the relevant comparison is not simply the advertised entry price versus the regular CRETA Electric price.

Calculate your own BaaS cost

  1. Estimate your annual kilometres from odometer records or a realistic driving diary.
  2. Multiply annual kilometres by the quoted battery rate per kilometre. At the announced starting rate, that means annual battery payments equal annual kilometres × ₹3.9, before considering any contract conditions or revisions.
  3. Multiply that annual amount by the planned ownership tenure.
  4. Add the vehicle finance interest, charging electricity, insurance, maintenance, taxes and any installation or electrical-upgrade costs.
  5. For outright battery ownership, include the higher financed purchase amount and compare the resulting monthly payment and total interest.
  6. Compare resale assumptions, contract transfer rules, minimum-distance conditions, excess-distance charges and what happens if you sell the car early; these terms must come from the current BaaS agreement.

A low-mileage driver may value the lower upfront commitment differently from a high-mileage driver, who will accumulate more per-kilometre battery payments. Hyundai’s announcement does not provide a complete lifetime-cost example, so do not treat ₹3.9 per kilometre as a universal total cost or assume it includes electricity, financing, servicing or insurance. Request the full schedule in writing and compare it with an outright-battery quotation over the same tenure.

Budgeting beyond the advertised price

The listed CRETA Electric starting price of ₹18,02,200 is far below the IONIQ 5’s listed starting price of ₹55,70,000. Your actual budget should also include registration, insurance, financing interest, home-charger installation, possible electrical-load upgrades and public-charging fees. State taxes and dealer charges can change the on-road total.

Use a three-number budget

  • Acquisition budget: the down payment, vehicle price, taxes and installation payable before delivery.
  • Monthly operating budget: loan instalment, electricity, public-charging fees, insurance provision and the BaaS per-kilometre payment if applicable.
  • Exit budget: the amount you could still owe when selling, including any transferable or outstanding BaaS obligations.

Compare the two cars over the same ownership period. A larger battery can reduce charging stops, but paying for capacity you rarely use may not produce a financial return. Conversely, choosing a smaller battery and then relying on paid DC charging every week can erase part of its apparent saving.

Space, comfort and technology priorities

The CRETA Electric’s appeal is its practical everyday-SUV role. It is the natural fit for buyers who want familiar dimensions, routine usability and a lower entry point. The IONIQ 5 is positioned higher, with the larger E-GMP platform, premium equipment, enhanced displays, connected features, safety technology and faster charging capability described in Hyundai’s India material.

Make a list of the features that change your daily experience rather than selecting by badge or battery size. Consider rear-seat use, luggage, ease of entering and exiting, visibility, the ability to fit a child seat, and whether your parking space can accommodate the vehicle comfortably. A test drive should include your normal passengers and, if possible, the roads where you spend most of your time.

A practical buying process

  1. Map your routes. Record daily kilometres, regular highway destinations, charger locations and whether you can charge at each destination.
  2. Confirm charging feasibility. Obtain apartment permission, check electrical load and plan cable routing before choosing a trim.
  3. Set the total-cost ceiling. Compare the CRETA Electric, IONIQ 5 and any BaaS offer using the same loan tenure, kilometres and ownership horizon.
  4. Choose the battery around your use. Pick 42 kWh for predictable, charger-supported city driving; 51.4 kWh for a larger range buffer; and the IONIQ 5 when its premium range, space and charging capability are essential.
  5. Verify current specifications. Ask the dealer to identify the battery capacity, certified range, AC and DC limits, included wallbox, warranty and model year on the written quotation.
  6. Test the charging plan. Use the myHyundai app to inspect your actual home, office and highway locations. Confirm connector and payment compatibility.
  7. Read the contract. For BaaS, check the per-kilometre definition, billing frequency, minimums, transfer conditions, early sale process and battery-related responsibilities.
  8. Place the order only after the infrastructure check. A car that cannot be charged where it is parked will be inconvenient regardless of its certified range.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using 473 km and 510 km as if they were the same claim

Hyundai publishes both figures in current materials for the CRETA Electric. Treat them as variant- or certification-specific and verify the current brochure. Do not use the higher number to estimate every trim’s route capability.

Planning from 100% to 0%

Certified range is not a sensible trip plan. Keep a reserve for traffic, weather, detours and a failed or occupied charger. Schedule the next stop before the battery is critically low.

Assuming a public charger’s maximum power is the car’s charging speed

The station’s advertised output, the vehicle’s charging system and battery conditions all affect the session. The IONIQ 5’s earlier 18-minute estimate was tied to a 350 kW charger and the prior 72.6 kWh specification; it is not a universal promise for every station or the updated model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying before checking apartment rules

Permission, sanctioned load, earthing and cable routing can take longer to resolve than a vehicle booking. Settle those issues first.

Comparing only the BaaS entry price

Include the distance-linked battery payment over your expected kilometres, financing, electricity, charging fees and resale or transfer conditions. Request the complete agreement rather than relying on the starting rate.

Bottom line

For most Indian households, the CRETA Electric is the balanced starting point: choose 42 kWh for predictable city use, or 51.4 kWh when extra range reduces real charging stops. The IONIQ 5 earns its premium when you need its 84.0 kWh battery, up to 690 km ARAI-certified range, premium space and faster long-distance charging. Whichever model you select, confirm the exact variant’s current range, secure a safe 7.4 kW home-charging setup where possible, and plan public charging with live route information rather than brochure figures alone.
