Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 9, 2026, combining the base game and expansion. Launch testing found that none of its three graphics modes is flawless, so the best setting depends on whether you value combat response, consistent frame delivery, image quality or apparent smoothness.

The short decision tree
- Choose the 30fps cap for the most predictable controls, especially during combat. It can still look uneven because launch testing found inconsistent frame pacing.
- Try uncapped mode if you play docked on a display with VRR. Verify that VRR actually engages; the mode can move above 30fps, but launch reports found inconsistent pacing and VRR behavior.
- Enable frame generation if smooth-looking traversal matters more than latency. It improves perceived motion rather than raising the game’s underlying simulation rate, and launch analysis measured a substantial input-delay penalty.
There is no universal best setting. A player who spends most of the game aiming, blocking and timing attacks should make a different choice from someone primarily exploring cities and wilderness on a television.

What the three modes actually do
30fps cap: the control-first option
The capped mode limits output to 30 frames per second. That ceiling makes frame delivery easier to anticipate than a rapidly changing frame rate, which is why it is the safest starting point for combat. Camera movement and character animation are not guaranteed to be perfectly even, however. Digital Foundry’s launch analysis, summarized by Nintendo Life, described the cap as having uneven frame pacing that can appear juddery.

Frame pacing is the time interval between displayed frames. At a perfect 30fps, each frame arrives every 33.3 milliseconds. If some frames arrive late and the next arrives quickly, the average can still read as 30fps while motion looks inconsistent. A cap therefore improves predictability without automatically fixing every stutter.
Uncapped: more instantaneous speed, less certainty
Uncapped mode removes the fixed ceiling. Launch testing summaries put it roughly in the mid-30s to 50fps range, depending on the scene. That can make camera pans and movement feel more immediate when the game is running above 30fps.
The trade-off is changing frame time. A scene that moves from the high 40s to the mid-30s can feel less stable than a well-paced 30fps presentation. The launch analysis also reported VRR problems, so uncapped mode is not automatically the best choice just because the number on a counter is higher.
Frame generation: smoother presentation, added delay
Frame generation creates additional displayed frames between frames produced by the game’s base renderer. The result can look closer to a 60fps presentation during movement, but the game simulation and input sampling still run at the underlying rate. It is a presentation technique, not a direct doubling of the game’s native responsiveness.
Launch analysis recorded approximately 130ms of input latency with frame generation in its test summary. That figure is a measurement from one launch analysis, not a guarantee for every display, scene or later patch, but it explains why the mode can feel sluggish when parrying, aiming or navigating menus. Reconstruction artifacts can also appear around moving objects or complex detail.
Mode comparison
| Mode | Base frame-rate behavior | Frame-time consistency | Control latency | Image and motion trade-offs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30fps cap | Fixed 30fps target | Uneven pacing reported at launch | Lowest of the three practical choices | No generated-frame artifacts, but judder can remain | Combat, precise movement and handheld play |
| Uncapped | Variable; launch summaries describe roughly the mid-30s to 50fps | Can fluctuate; VRR behavior was inconsistent in testing | Lower than frame generation when the game is rendering quickly | Higher instantaneous rate, but more visible swings without working VRR | Docked play with verified VRR and tolerance for variability |
| Frame generation | Base rate remains variable while extra frames are displayed | Perceived motion is smoother | Substantially higher; approximately 130ms was measured in one launch analysis | Possible reconstruction artifacts and delayed controls | Exploration and visual smoothness over combat response |
Resolution: separate output resolution from internal rendering
Reports of the Switch 2 edition using different resolutions are describing different stages of the image pipeline. Nintendo Life’s side-by-side report gives approximate upscaled outputs of 1080p in handheld mode and 1440p when docked, with performance hovering around 40fps in its summary. With frame generation enabled, motion appeared comparable to about 60fps.

A separate launch technical summary reported approximately 540p internal rendering in docked mode before upscaling. That lower internal figure is not a contradiction of a 1440p output: the game can render the scene at a lower resolution, reconstruct or upscale it, and send a 1440p signal to the television. Output resolution tells you what the display receives; internal resolution tells you how many source pixels the renderer produced before reconstruction.

The practical consequence is that a 1440p television signal does not mean every scene is natively rendered at 2560×1440. Fine detail, foliage and distant geometry may depend heavily on the upscaler. Frame generation adds another reconstruction stage, so inspect moving detail rather than judging only a paused screenshot.
Choosing settings in handheld mode
Why the 30fps cap is the sensible baseline
Handheld play combines a smaller screen, direct thumb controls and no external VRR television to absorb changes in frame time. Start with the 30fps cap and frame generation off. This avoids adding the latency penalty measured in launch testing and gives combat inputs the most direct path through the system.
At handheld viewing distances, perceived judder can be less distracting than on a large television, but uneven pacing is still visible during rapid camera movement. If a particular area looks rough, test a short combat encounter and a fast traversal route before changing modes; a setting that looks smooth while walking may feel poor during a fight.
When to test frame generation handheld
Frame generation is worth trying handheld only when you clearly prefer smoother camera motion to immediate response. Compare the same movement with it enabled and disabled, then perform actions that require timing: guarding, releasing a charged attack, turning toward a moving target and opening a menu. If those actions feel delayed, return to the 30fps cap.
Because the game’s underlying simulation is not doubled, frame generation should not be treated as a way to make a low-rate combat encounter genuinely responsive. It changes the appearance of motion between the game’s rendered frames.

Choosing settings in docked mode
Use uncapped mode only with confirmed VRR
Uncapped mode has the most to gain from a docked VRR setup. A compatible television or monitor can adjust its refresh timing to follow changing frame delivery, reducing the appearance of tearing and some judder. The launch analysis nevertheless found VRR behavior that was not consistently reliable, so compatibility on a specification sheet is not enough.
After selecting uncapped mode, verify VRR with the display’s own information panel or refresh-rate indicator while moving through several areas. Test a town, an outdoor route and a combat encounter. If the display never reports variable refresh, or if motion still tears or repeatedly hitches, switch back to the 30fps cap rather than assuming the uncapped number is helping.
Large-screen image priorities
Docked play makes reconstruction limits easier to notice because the image is enlarged. The approximate 1440p output reported at launch can look sharp in static scenes while still showing unstable detail during movement. Frame generation can make camera pans appear smoother, but its artifacts and delay are also easier to notice on a large screen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the game’s TV motion-blur option according to taste. Motion blur can hide some judder during pans, but it also softens detail and does not repair inconsistent frame delivery. If you are evaluating a mode, compare it with the same motion-blur setting each time.
How to configure and test each option
Safe starting configuration
- Open the game’s graphics or display settings.
- Set the frame-rate option to the 30fps cap.
- Turn frame generation off.
- Choose the TV motion-blur setting you prefer, then leave it unchanged while comparing modes.
- Play a short section containing both traversal and combat before making further changes.
This baseline isolates the game’s native presentation. It prevents frame generation from masking the frame pacing and latency characteristics you need to evaluate first.
Testing uncapped mode
- Change the frame-rate option to uncapped while keeping frame generation off.
- On a docked VRR display, use the television or monitor’s status screen to confirm that refresh rate is changing during movement.
- Pan the camera slowly, sprint through an outdoor area and fight several enemies.
- Keep uncapped mode only if motion is consistently preferable and controls remain predictable.
- If VRR does not engage or pacing becomes distracting, return to the 30fps cap.
Do not judge uncapped mode from a single quiet room. Its advantage depends on the game reaching higher instantaneous rates, while its weaknesses become more visible when the rate falls or VRR fails.

Testing frame generation
- Start from the 30fps-cap baseline or a verified uncapped setup.
- Enable the game’s FSR 3 frame-generation option.
- Repeat the same traversal and combat actions used for the baseline.
- Watch for delayed turns, late attack responses and reconstruction instability around moving characters or environmental detail.
- Keep it enabled for exploration if the smoother presentation is worth the delay; disable it for combat-heavy sessions if timing suffers.
Frame generation should be evaluated by feel as well as appearance. A counter or smoother camera pan cannot reveal the full effect on a perfectly timed guard or attack.
Input latency and combat decisions
Input latency is the time between a button press and the corresponding visible response. It includes controller scanning, game processing, rendering, display processing and any generated-frame queue. Frame generation can increase that total because the system must create and present additional frames from already rendered information.
The approximately 130ms result reported in one launch analysis is substantial for timing-sensitive play. It does not mean every player, display or future software version will produce exactly that value. It does mean that frame generation should be considered a latency trade rather than a free performance upgrade.
For vocations or encounters that depend on precise blocks, dodges, charged releases or quick target changes, begin with frame generation disabled. If you later enable it for travel, switch back before a difficult fight instead of expecting muscle memory built at the lower-latency setting to transfer unchanged.

| Your priority | Recommended setting | Reason | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reliable combat timing | 30fps cap, frame generation off | Most predictable control path | Uneven pacing can still cause judder |
| Smoother exploration on a large screen | Frame generation, after testing latency | Generated frames improve perceived motion | Delayed controls and reconstruction artifacts |
| Higher instantaneous rate with a VRR display | Uncapped, frame generation off initially | Can rise above 30fps without generated frames | VRR must actually engage; pacing remains variable |
| Mostly handheld play | 30fps cap | No external VRR dependency and lower latency | Check whether judder is acceptable on the built-in screen |
| Mixed play with frequent combat | 30fps cap as the default; test uncapped docked | Preserves a consistent control baseline | Keep separate expectations for handheld and docked setups |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming a 30fps cap guarantees smoothness
A cap controls the ceiling, not the exact delivery time of every frame. If motion looks uneven, test whether the problem is pacing rather than the numerical frame rate. There is no setting in the launch evidence that guarantees perfectly even 30fps delivery.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choosing uncapped because the peak number is higher
A higher peak does not eliminate drops or inconsistent frame times. Use uncapped mode only after checking it on the display and in representative scenes. If the result feels worse than the cap, the variable rate is not serving your setup.

Confusing output resolution with native rendering
A 1440p docked signal and approximately 540p internal rendering can both be accurate descriptions of the same image pipeline. Treat output figures as the signal sent to the display, not proof that every pixel was rendered natively.
Using frame generation to solve a base-rate problem
Generated frames can make motion look smoother, but they do not turn the underlying simulation into a fully responsive 60fps game. If controls feel late, disable the feature rather than trying to compensate with a higher display refresh rate.
Testing only one scene
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is sensitive to scene complexity. Towns, open routes, combat and camera movement stress the renderer differently. Test all of them before settling on a mode.

What the developer statement means
Before launch, Capcom producer Naoto Oyama said the hardware was “currently seeing a minimum 30 frames per second rate performance on that hardware (and, in many scenes, it’s even higher!).” That statement is best read as a pre-release expectation, not a guarantee that every graphics mode or scene will hold a locked rate.
Launch-week analysis supplied the more useful mode-by-mode caveats: uneven pacing with the cap, variable performance and VRR concerns when uncapped, and substantial latency with frame generation. Those measurements may change if Capcom patches the game or adjusts reconstruction and display behavior.
Patch and update considerations
The reported figures come from launch-period testing. A later update could alter frame pacing, frame-generation latency, VRR handling, internal resolution or available graphics controls. After a major patch, repeat the same baseline, uncapped and frame-generation tests rather than assuming the previous choice still applies.
Keep a note of which mode you use in handheld and docked play. If an update changes one mode but not another, separate profiles make the difference easier to detect. Do not treat a new frame counter as proof of lower latency; verify response with the same combat actions each time.
Final recommendation
For most players, set the 30fps cap with frame generation disabled first. It offers the clearest control response despite reported pacing irregularities. Move to uncapped mode only when a VRR display has been verified in real gameplay. Use frame generation as an optional exploration setting when smoother-looking motion outweighs the measured latency and possible reconstruction artifacts. This approach matches the Switch 2 edition’s actual trade-offs instead of assuming that the highest displayed frame rate is automatically the best experience.
