If an animal is unhappy, send a vet to research that species and target the welfare deficit you can see. If welfare is stable, assign a mechanic to the barrier, facility, utility, building set, aquarium or aviary feature that blocks your next project. Research animals already in the zoo, or the species you will house next, so every completed topic has an immediate use.
There is no published universal tier list for Planet Zoo 2. Exact prices, durations, topic names and unlock order are not established outside the live in-game Research screen, so a good plan is responsive rather than memorised.

How Planet Zoo 2 research is divided
Research is split between two staff careers and two facilities. Vets conduct animal or species research through a research centre. Mechanics conduct construction and infrastructure research through a workshop. Keepers handle routine animal care, while mechanics also repair habitat walls and other infrastructure. Research assignments compete with those operational duties, so the best topic is the one whose benefit arrives soon enough to justify taking a staff member away from treatment, repairs or routine work.

The game director has described animals as the centre of the experience and welfare as an important part of the loop. That makes animal research more than a passive technology path: it is a way to remove a problem guests can see and animals experience. Mechanic research matters just as much when a physical dependency prevents expansion.

The priority order that works for a new zoo
1. Resolve an active welfare warning
Open the affected animal or habitat information and identify the lowest welfare drivers before choosing a topic. The documented drivers include habitat suitability, food, enrichment, group size and cohabitation. Research can improve knowledge or unlock enrichment, but it cannot compensate for an unsuitable enclosure, inadequate food or a harmful social mix. Correct the enclosure at the same time as you begin research.
- Low habitat suitability: review terrain, temperature, water, shelter and space; choose species research only if the next welfare benefit addresses the remaining deficit.
- Low enrichment: research the species when an enrichment unlock is available, then place the newly available items and check that the animal can use them.
- Food problem: fix feeder placement, food quality or keeper access first; research is not a substitute for a functioning feeding route.
- Group-size or cohabitation stress: separate incompatible animals, adjust group numbers or create species-specific zones before spending research time.
This is the highest-priority case because an unresolved welfare problem consumes staff time, depresses the visitor experience and can worsen while you pursue a distant unlock.
2. Research species already in the zoo
Once an urgent deficit is being handled, select a species you already keep. The return is immediate: the animals are present, staff are already servicing their habitat and any new knowledge can be applied without waiting for adoption, quarantine or construction. Prioritise the species whose welfare is hardest to maintain or whose habitat generates the most recurring work.
Do not choose solely because a species is popular. A species with stable welfare and no near-term expansion may provide less practical value than one currently missing enrichment or requiring frequent intervention.
3. Prepare the next species before it arrives
When current habitats are stable, select the animal planned for your next expansion. Research it before adoption, or immediately after acquisition if the project is already underway. This lets you design the habitat around the knowledge you will have rather than retrofitting enrichment and welfare features after guests arrive.
Keep a short construction plan beside the research queue: species, required habitat features, expected group size and the date you intend to open the habitat. If that project is still speculative, postpone its research in favour of a dependency you can use now.
4. Remove the next construction bottleneck
Assign a mechanic when a specific barrier, shelter, facility, utility or building set prevents progress. Name the blocked build before starting research. “I need a barrier for the new habitat” is a useful objective; “unlock something useful” is not.

Decorative pieces can wait unless they are part of a defined build objective. Early research has greater value when it lets you open a habitat, restore a failing service, connect utilities or complete a guest route.
5. Plan aquariums and aviaries as projects
Aquariums and aviaries add specialised habitat and infrastructure requirements. Species compatibility and species-specific zones become more important when several animals share a themed area. The sequel also presents shoals of fish as groups, so layout, capacity and husbandry decisions should be made before you commit to a large aquatic build.
Research these systems when the project is near-term: you have selected the species, reserved the footprint, and know which facility or habitat element is missing. Unlocking aquarium or aviary pieces merely because they exist can leave a mechanic occupied while a more urgent repair or barrier remains unavailable.
How to choose between two competing topics
When two animal topics or two infrastructure topics look attractive, score each against the same five questions. The method avoids pretending that one research order fits every zoo.

Use urgency first. Use breadth only as a tie-breaker. A broad building unlock is not automatically better than a species topic that prevents current stress.
A practical first-zoo research sequence
The following sequence is a decision process, not a fixed list of topic names. The live Research screen remains the authority for the topics, prices, durations and prerequisites available in your edition.
- Audit every habitat. Identify animals with the lowest welfare and write down the exact deficit: suitability, food, enrichment, group size or cohabitation.
- Assign one vet. Use the research centre to start the species topic that can address the most serious current deficit. Keep other vets available for treatment if your zoo has active disease cases.
- Repair the underlying habitat. Add shelter, adjust terrain or temperature, correct food access, or change the social grouping while research runs.
- Review the next expansion. Pick the species you will actually acquire next and check whether its research should follow the current project.
- Mark the construction dependency. If a barrier, facility, utility or building piece is missing, assign a mechanic through the workshop to that exact dependency.
- Recheck the queue after each completion. A finished topic can change the bottleneck. Do not leave a vet or mechanic researching yesterday’s problem while a new warning appears.
Only one part of that sequence is deliberately flexible: the order of the second and fifth steps. If a construction failure is stopping animal care or closing a habitat, mechanic research can move ahead of the next species topic. If animals are already stressed, veterinary research normally comes first.

Animal research: what to look for
Enrichment unlocks
Enrichment is the clearest reason to research a species. Confirm that the Research screen offers an enrichment-related benefit for the animal you keep or plan to keep. After completion, place the item, verify that the species can reach and use it, and watch the welfare panel rather than assuming that ownership alone solves the deficit.

Species knowledge for a planned habitat
Research is most efficient when it informs design. Before buying an animal, note its suitability requirements, social needs and compatibility with any species already planned for the zone. Researching the species first can prevent a habitat that technically fits the animal but lacks the welfare features it needs.
Social and mixed-species decisions
Group size and cohabitation are welfare drivers, so research should not be used to justify an overcrowded mixed habitat. If the proposed combination creates stress, make separate species-specific zones or revise the population plan. A research benefit is valuable only when the enclosure remains compatible with the animals living in it.
Mechanic research: what to unlock first
Barriers and habitat shells
A barrier or shelter that blocks a planned habitat has high priority because it is a hard dependency: without it, the habitat cannot open. Start with the exact component shown as unavailable, then verify that your mechanics can build and maintain it.
Utilities and animal-care facilities
Utilities and facilities can affect several habitats at once. Prefer a utility that completes a connected service network or a facility that removes a recurring operational failure. Check the build footprint and access route before research finishes so the unlock can be used immediately.

Research a guest building when it solves a measured capacity or service problem, such as a route that cannot support the planned expansion. Leave purely decorative sets for a point when they will be installed as part of a defined build; they should not displace a barrier, shelter or utility needed for animal care.
Aquariums, aviaries and shoals: when specialised research pays off
Specialised habitats require more planning than adding another standard enclosure. Begin by choosing the species and the zone type, then determine the infrastructure needed to support it. Check compatibility before combining species, and reserve room for staff access, guest viewing and future population changes.

- Aquarium project: research the aquarium-related piece when the aquatic species, footprint and supporting facilities are already selected.
- Aviary project: research the aviary component when the flight space, access and species plan are ready to build.
- Shoal-based fish: treat fish as a group in your planning; capacity and group welfare can matter more than choosing a single showcase animal.
If the project is months away in your development plan, keep the mechanic available for an immediate barrier or utility instead. Specialised research is powerful because it enables a complete project, not because it is inherently superior to every general unlock.

Research uses staff who also perform essential work. Before assigning a topic, inspect the current workload of the chosen vet or mechanic.

- Keep enough vets available for treatment and disease response; a research assignment should not leave an active case unattended.
- Keep mechanics available for repairs, especially when habitat walls or critical utilities are degrading.
- Place the research centre or workshop on a route the assigned staff member can reach without crossing unnecessary guest areas.
- When several staff can research, use the one with the lowest immediate operational load rather than removing the only mechanic serving a failing habitat.
- Review staff workload after opening a new habitat; population growth and additional facilities can change the correct assignment.
The opportunity cost is part of the topic choice. A research benefit that arrives quickly but causes a preventable repair backlog may be worse than a slightly less exciting topic handled by spare capacity.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Following a memorised “best” order
Published descriptions confirm the two research branches but do not establish a universal ranking, shared prices, durations or unlock order for every Planet Zoo 2 setup. Use the live Research screen and your zoo’s warnings instead of copying a fixed tier list.
Researching a distant plan
Starting an aquarium topic for a project with no species, space or budget ties up a mechanic without improving the current zoo. Pause the plan and choose the dependency that can be used immediately.
Using research to mask a habitat fault
Species knowledge does not repair a broken feeder, unsuitable terrain, inaccessible shelter or incompatible group. Fix the physical and social causes while research addresses the remaining knowledge gap.

An unlock has no welfare value until it is installed and usable. Place the enrichment, build the facility or modify the habitat, then recheck welfare and staff access.
Overbuilding before research completes
Do not commit to a large specialised zone before confirming the required pieces. The Research screen can reveal dependencies that change the footprint or cost of the project; plan the space, but avoid irreversible layouts until the needed unlocks are known.
Example decisions
One stressed animal and a tempting building set
A current animal has low enrichment while a decorative building set is available to research. Choose the species topic, correct any habitat-access issue, and install the enrichment when it unlocks. The building set can follow once the welfare warning is cleared.
A stable zoo blocked by a barrier
All animals have acceptable welfare, but the next habitat cannot be built because its barrier is unavailable. Assign a mechanic through the workshop to that barrier topic. Its breadth is less important than the fact that it is the immediate dependency.
A planned aviary with no immediate welfare crisis
If the aviary species is selected and construction is the next project, research the required aviary infrastructure before adoption. If the species is only a long-term idea, research the current zoo’s next habitat or utility instead.
Two species, one vet
One species has a visible enrichment deficit; the other is healthy but planned for next season. Research the current species first. After the deficit is resolved, move to the planned species so knowledge is ready when acquisition begins.
What is confirmed and what remains variable
Frontier’s official help material establishes that vets perform animal research through a research centre and mechanics perform research through a workshop, alongside their care, treatment, repair and infrastructure responsibilities. Current Planet Zoo 2 guidance describes the same practical branches and warns that exact costs and unlock ordering are not published as a complete shared list.
Because no authoritative statistic ranks topics by profit, win rate or time saved, claims such as “this is always the fastest research” are not supported. The bottleneck method is a practical rule: solve the most consequential current problem, choose an unlock you can use soon, and account for the staff member’s other duties.

- Is there an animal with an active welfare warning?
- Which driver is lowest: suitability, food, enrichment, group size or cohabitation?
- Can a species topic directly address that driver?
- Do you have a habitat ready for the next species you plan to acquire?
- What exact barrier, facility, utility, aquarium or aviary piece blocks the next build?
- Can the assigned vet or mechanic leave routine duties without creating a more serious failure?
- Will the unlock be installed and usable immediately after research completes?
- Have you checked the live Research screen for the current topic name, prerequisite, cost and duration?
The Bottom Line
Research the problem your zoo has now, then the project you will build next. Vets and species research are the right answer for animal welfare and enrichment; mechanics and infrastructure research are the right answer for blocked construction. Recheck the live Research screen after every completion because Planet Zoo 2 does not have a published one-size-fits-all order.
