The best iPhone Lock Screen wallpaper is one that suits your taste without hiding the time, widgets, or notifications. Preview your chosen image on the actual Lock Screen, adjust its crop, and decide whether you want one still image or a screen that changes over time.
Choose an image that works with the Lock Screen
Think of the wallpaper as part of the screen’s layout, not just a picture behind it. The clock, widgets, controls, and notifications all share that space. Before you settle on an image, check that the time remains easy to read and that the clock does not cover the subject you care about. Keep important details away from areas where you expect text or widgets to appear.

This is practical composition advice, not a guaranteed legibility formula: Apple does not specify a universal threshold for contrast or text visibility. The best test is to preview the image with your own clock and chosen Lock Screen items in place.
Pick a look that fits your taste
You can use a personal photo or choose from Apple’s wallpaper categories, which include options such as Weather & Astronomy, Emoji, and Color. A detailed photo can feel personal, while a simpler image may leave the screen less visually busy. Apple also provides wallpaper styles and filters; the options available depend on the wallpaper you choose. See Apple’s iPhone wallpaper instructions.
Decide what the screen needs to show
If you rely on Lock Screen widgets or controls, choose an image that gives them room to stand out. If you would rather see an uninterrupted photo, keep the layout simpler. Apple lets you customize more than the background: the clock’s appearance, widgets, controls, and image style can all be adjusted. Not every option is available on every iPhone model; Apple notes that feature availability varies.
Fit and preview a photo before keeping it
A photo does not have to be made specifically for a phone wallpaper. During Lock Screen customization, you can drag and pinch to reposition and zoom the image. This is useful when the initial crop cuts off a face, landscape detail, or other subject. Check the image again with the clock and widgets visible, since a crop that looks good by itself may place important details beneath interface elements.

Apple also documents a Depth Effect for supported wallpapers, though availability depends on the image and device. Treat it as an optional style rather than a reason to choose a photo that otherwise fits poorly. For the customization controls and options, see Apple’s guide to creating a custom Lock Screen.

- Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos, Photo Shuffle, or an included wallpaper category.
- Customize the Lock Screen as desired, including its image position, clock appearance, widgets, and available style options.
- Choose whether to use the wallpaper as a paired Lock Screen and Home Screen background or customize the Home Screen separately.
- Preview the result with the time and any widgets visible before finishing.
To use the gallery instead, touch and hold the Lock Screen, then choose an existing screen to customize or add a new one. Apple’s current steps are in its wallpaper setup guide.
Choose between one wallpaper and Photo Shuffle
A single image keeps the screen consistent. If you prefer variety, Photo Shuffle can use selected categories or albums and rotate images On Tap, On Lock, Hourly, or Daily. Choose the frequency that suits how often you want the Lock Screen to change; you do not need to use shuffle if you prefer a dependable, familiar background. Apple explains the available setup options in its iPhone wallpaper instructions.

Consider motion effects and compatibility
Spatial wallpapers
Apple says certain photos can be used as 3D spatial wallpapers on iPhone 12 or later with iOS 26. Eligibility is not guaranteed by a particular composition, but Apple says qualifying images commonly have high-quality lighting, clear separation between subject and background, or a landscape orientation. Check the preview and use a different image if the effect is unavailable or does not suit the screen. Details are in Apple’s spatial wallpaper guide.
Reduce motion effects
If you prefer less motion, open Settings > Accessibility > Motion and review Reduce Motion. It is an optional preference setting; you can also choose a still wallpaper. Apple describes the control in its guide to motion settings.
Use separate Lock Screens for different situations
Apple lets you create multiple Lock Screens, switch between them, and link a Lock Screen to a Focus. That can be useful if you want different combinations of wallpaper and widgets for work, sleep, or personal time. You can keep each screen suited to its purpose rather than trying to make one image and layout work for every situation. See Apple’s custom Lock Screen guide for the available customization features.
