Choose thermal paper by the printer mechanism, not by the ESP32 board. Check the mechanism’s supported paper width and maximum roll outside diameter, then buy a roll that meets both limits. If your printer software asks for a paper-width setting, configure it to match the mechanism.
Check these dimensions before buying
- Paper width: Confirm the width specified for your printer mechanism. Thermal printers commonly use 58 mm or 80 mm paper, but the mechanism must explicitly support the width you choose.
- Maximum roll outside diameter: The roll has to fit inside the printer. A roll can have the right width and still be too large in diameter.
- Width tolerance: Follow any tolerance the manufacturer gives. For example, DFRobot specifies 58 mm ±0.5 mm for its DFR0503 embedded printer. Do not assume another mechanism has the same tolerance.
- Software width setting: Check whether your printer library detects paper width or expects you to set it yourself.

These examples show why “58 mm paper” or “80 mm paper” alone does not establish that a roll will fit. The ESP32 does not set the printer’s physical dimensions; the mechanism does.

Choose a roll that fits the mechanism
For a verified 58 mm printer
Search for 58 mm thermal paper, then compare the roll’s outside diameter with the mechanism’s stated limit. For the DFRobot DFR0503, the specified roll diameter is 30 mm. A different 58 mm printer may accept a larger roll, so use its own documentation rather than assuming the DFRobot limit applies.

For a verified 80 mm printer
Buy 80 mm thermal receipt paper only after confirming that the mechanism supports that width. Check the roll diameter limit as well: two printers that accept 80 mm paper may have different-sized compartments.

Account for the roll’s supplied length and construction
A standard-length roll may be too large for a compact printer even when its width is correct. Adafruit’s mini thermal receipt printer guide says common 25 m rolls may not fit its mini printer as supplied. It describes rewinding paper onto an empty spool and cutting it to an appropriate diameter. This is a workaround for that compact-printer context, not a universal requirement; first check your own mechanism’s specifications.
Set the software to match the hardware
Some printer software needs a manually selected paper width. The who-zefa ESP32 ESC/POS library’s documentation gives 58 mm and 80 mm as configuration examples and says it does not query the printer for its width. Other libraries may work differently, so check the instructions for the library you use and set the width to match the installed mechanism.

Buying checklist
- Find the printer mechanism’s documentation or model number.
- Confirm the supported paper width and any stated width tolerance.
- Confirm the maximum roll outside diameter.
- Check that the roll you are buying fits both dimensions, including the supplied roll size.
- Set the paper width in firmware or the printer library if it requires manual configuration.
