Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use the spare Android phone as the camera and a second device as the viewer. With AlfredCamera, install the app on both, sign in, pair them with the in-app QR workflow, then test the live view at the intended location before mounting the phone. The setup depends on internet, power, compatible devices, and permissions; it is a convenient monitoring option, not a guaranteed or offline security system.
What you need before you start
- A spare Android phone: Confirm its camera works, it can remain plugged in, and AlfredCamera is available for it in Google Play. AlfredCamera’s setup help page, updated June 15, 2025, lists Android 5.0 or later for a camera device. Check the setup requirements.
- A viewer device: This can be another phone or compatible device running AlfredCamera. The same help page lists Android 7.0 or later for a viewer. Minimum requirements can change, so confirm availability on both devices before spending time on setup.
- Reliable internet and power: The camera and viewer need internet for features such as activity detection, live streaming, notifications, and event playback. The camera should stay powered, especially when it is being used remotely. AlfredCamera’s requirements page was updated September 7, 2025.
- A suitable place to position the phone: Choose a location with a useful view, a nearby power outlet, and a dependable Wi-Fi signal. A stable phone stand or mount can help, but check that it fits the phone and the intended position.
AlfredCamera’s general guide has older, conflicting Android minimum-version language. The newer, specific setup-help article is the better reference for the listed requirements, but the app store listing on each device is the practical compatibility check.

Set up and pair the phones
- Connect the spare phone to Wi-Fi. Keep it on a stable network. AlfredCamera says a camera device needs internet for activity detection, recording, and cloud uploads; the viewer also needs internet for live streaming and related features.
- Install AlfredCamera on both devices. Use the app-store listing available to each device. Sign in on both using a supported option; AlfredCamera’s setup guide describes Google, Apple, or email sign-in.
- Add the camera in the viewer app. Follow AlfredCamera’s prompts to add a camera and pair the devices through its QR workflow. Complete the pairing in the app rather than relying on the phone’s built-in camera app alone.
- Confirm the live feed. Check that the viewer displays the spare phone’s camera image. If it does not, check that both devices are online and signed in to the intended account, then follow the app’s pairing prompts again.
- Grant permissions after reviewing them. See the permissions section below before enabling access. Android menu names and locations vary by version and manufacturer.
- Test the view where the phone will sit. Move the camera phone to the intended spot and check the live feed, angle, lighting, and connection before securing it. AlfredCamera’s setup guide recommends testing the live view before mounting.
- Mount and keep it powered. Position the phone securely and leave it connected to a compatible charger. Avoid pressing the camera phone’s power or home button if that takes the app offline; AlfredCamera warns that these actions may cause a camera device to disconnect.
Plan for Wi-Fi, power, and data use
This setup is internet-dependent. AlfredCamera says camera devices must have a stable connection for activity detection, recording, and cloud uploads, while the viewer also needs internet to access key features. A remote viewer can be on a different network, but a camera phone that loses its connection cannot reliably provide those online functions.

Test connectivity at the exact intended location. If the picture or connection is unreliable, try moving the phone closer to the router or improving Wi-Fi coverage. Keep the phone plugged in when using it as a remote camera; an old phone’s battery is not a dependable long-term power source.

AlfredCamera’s September 2025 support page gives the following approximate data-use estimates. The company notes that actual use varies with lighting, movement, and other conditions:
| Activity | AlfredCamera’s estimate |
|---|---|
| Live feed | 20–70 KB/s |
| Activity-detection snapshot | 20–50 KB per snapshot |
| Five-second activity event | 80–120 KB for free users; 400–600 KB for premium users |
| Premium activity detection | 150–250 KB/s |
| Continuous recording | 50 KB/s for free users; 120 KB/s for premium users |
These are AlfredCamera’s estimates, not guaranteed rates for every phone or household. The company recommends running the app for a day or two to get a more realistic sense of local data use. The figures do not establish the service’s overall recording limits or premium-plan terms.

Review permissions and privacy before placing the camera
AlfredCamera’s permissions help page, updated December 24, 2025, describes access it requests for specific functions: camera access for video, microphone access for audio and two-way communication, media or photo access to save or retrieve recordings, and—on Android 10 and later—display over other apps. Review the app’s current prompts and Android settings; the permission names and controls may differ between devices. AlfredCamera also notes that Android 11 and later can remove permissions from apps that have not been used, depending on device settings. See the vendor’s permissions explanation.
Only aim the camera at areas you are entitled to monitor, and consider household members and visitors. Before enabling audio or placing a camera in a private area, review the app’s current privacy documentation and decide whether its permissions and operation suit your needs. Recording laws vary by location; the available information here does not establish the rules for your jurisdiction.

Its support page also says service personnel may have limited access for maintenance and that public agents may request videos through legal processes. A repurposed phone can provide app-based viewing and, depending on the service and settings, activity detection and video recording. It should not be treated as equivalent to a dedicated security system: it relies on the phone, app, Wi-Fi, account, and continuous power, and a failure in one of those can interrupt access or recording. The available information does not establish guaranteed alerts, uninterrupted recording, crime prevention, or offline operation.

- DISCREET DESIGN: Compact and inconspicuous form factor allows the camera to blend seamlessly into any environment.
- HD VIDEO RECORDING: Captures clear, high-definition footage to ensure every detail is recorded with precision.
- Mini Camera for Spying: Mini size, dark color, easy to be hidden in environment. Can record videos 7*24 hours, ensure home security.
- WIDE-ANGLE LENS: Broad field of view covers a large area, minimizing blind spots for more comprehensive surveillance.
- EASY SETUP: Simple installation process allows you to place and operate the camera quickly without technical expertise.
After setup, check the live view and connection periodically, and make sure the phone has not lost power or gone offline. If dependable security coverage is essential, compare alternatives based on whether they need a second viewer, their internet and power requirements, whether recording is local or cloud-based, retention terms, device compatibility, and what happens during an outage.
