Start with Career if Planet Zoo 2 is new to you or you want guided objectives. Choose Franchise for a connected network of zoos, animal trading and continuing management. Choose Sandbox when unrestricted creative building matters most. Planet Hub is an overview for managing your conservation network, not a separately listed fourth mode.
Planet Zoo 2 launched on October 13, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its launch roster contains more than 130 animals, including aquatic species and fully flying birds, so the best mode depends on how much structure, economy and social interaction you want around those systems.

The three launch modes at a glance
Frontier Developments’ launch description names Career, Franchise and Sandbox. Each uses the same core toolkit—habitat construction, animal care, guest services, education, terrain, foliage, reserves and community creations—but applies a different level of direction and pressure.
| Mode | Guided objectives | Economic pressure | Online trading and community interaction | Persistence across a zoo network | Creative freedom | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Career | Strongest | Structured by objectives and management tasks | Not the defining focus | Campaign-style progression | High, within scenarios | New players and goal-oriented players |
| Franchise | Limited compared with Career | Ongoing network management and animal-market decisions | Core feature: trade animals and join community goals | Strongest; multiple zoos and Wildlife Reserves | High, but shaped by the economy | Persistent managers and social players |
| Sandbox | Little or none by default | Optional constraints; the accessed listing does not enumerate every setting | Not the defining focus | Primarily an individual creative project | Highest; the official listing calls it “unlimited creativity” | Builders, planners and experimenters |
If two choices still appeal to you, decide which pressure you would rather live with: Career’s objectives, Franchise’s economy and network, or Sandbox’s lack of a required progression path.

Career: the safest first choice
What Career teaches
Career places you with the Fauna and Ecosystems Network (FEN) in a globe-spanning conservation adventure. Its objectives introduce habitat construction, animal care, guest management, conservation projects and the Wildlife Reserve system in a sequence that gives each system a reason to exist.
That structure is valuable because Planet Zoo 2 is broader than a conventional enclosure builder. You may need to understand land habitats, freshwater or saltwater aquariums, customizable aviaries and large reserves. Career gives you a context for learning those systems rather than presenting every possibility at once.
Who should pick it
- Players who have not played a Planet Zoo game before.
- Players who prefer explicit goals, story context and a measured introduction to new mechanics.
- Players who want to learn guest needs, education and animal welfare before running a self-directed network.
- Players who want conservation objectives to shape their first projects.
What Career is not
Career is not the best match for a completely freeform build in which you decide the theme, layout and pace without objectives. Its scenarios provide direction, so a builder who wants to prototype an enormous aquarium or an elaborate reserve immediately may find the structure restrictive. You can still construct creatively, but the scenario’s requirements remain part of the experience.

What makes Franchise different
Franchise is built around a global network of zoos and Wildlife Reserves. The official description highlights trading animals with other players and working together on community goals. Progress is therefore broader than a single location: decisions about animals, facilities and conservation can matter across the network you build.
Choose Franchise if you enjoy
- Maintaining several locations instead of treating one zoo as a finished project.
- Comparing animal-market opportunities and deciding when a trade improves your network.
- Participating in shared community goals.
- Long-term management in which finances, animal availability and expansion affect your next move.
The trade-off
Franchise is less suitable for an isolated, no-economy creative session. Its appeal comes from persistence and interaction, so you should expect to make management decisions rather than simply place every desired object without consequence. If you dislike market decisions or online community features, Sandbox will provide a cleaner creative space.

Who should start here
Experienced management-game players can begin with Franchise, especially if they already understand habitat planning and animal needs. New players can also choose it, but Career is usually a gentler way to learn the fundamentals before taking responsibility for a connected network.
Sandbox: maximum creative control
What Sandbox provides
The official listing describes Sandbox as “unlimited creativity.” It is the mode for designing a zoo around your own brief: a compact city attraction, a sprawling reserve, a showcase aquarium, a bird-focused aviary complex or an experimental combination of all of them.
Sandbox lets you concentrate on piece-by-piece construction, blueprints, terrain and foliage tools, guest amenities, education, habitats and scenery without Career’s sequence of objectives or Franchise’s network economy defining the session.
Money and other constraints
If your main question is “Can I play without managing money?”, Sandbox is the closest fit because its purpose is unrestricted creation. The accessed official listing confirms that Sandbox supports the creative-first approach but does not enumerate every individual setting or toggle. Check the options presented in your installed version before assuming that a particular constraint can be enabled or disabled.
Sandbox is still a management laboratory
Creative freedom does not make the underlying systems irrelevant. You can use Sandbox to test sightlines, terrain grades, guest amenities, education layouts, animal spaces, aquariums and aviaries. If you choose to retain management constraints, it can also function as a low-stakes practice environment. The important distinction is that you decide which pressures to keep.

Who should choose it first
- Builders who already know how they want a zoo to look.
- Players prototyping a habitat before committing resources in another mode.
- Players who want to explore the new aquatic, flying-bird and reserve systems without a campaign objective.
- Players who care more about visual composition and experimentation than progression.
Planet Hub: an organizational layer, not a fourth mode
Frontier describes Planet Hub as a central view of a growing conservation network where you can manage locations and network activity. Treat it as the place that helps you oversee zoos and reserves, not as a mode with its own separate win condition.
This distinction matters when you are deciding where to begin. Selecting Career, Franchise or Sandbox determines the kind of play taking place; Planet Hub helps you see and administer the network created by that play. It does not replace the three launch modes named in the official materials.
Does Planet Zoo 2 have Challenge mode?
The October 2026 launch announcement and the Steam listing name Career, Franchise and Sandbox. Neither lists a separate Challenge mode. The accurate launch-era answer is that Challenge is not an officially listed mode.
That omission does not establish whether a future update could add Challenge or whether challenge-style rules might appear inside another mode. Do not select a mode expecting a separately labelled Challenge campaign unless your current version explicitly shows one.
How the new conservation systems should influence your choice
Aquariums and aquatic species
Planet Zoo 2 adds fully aquatic species and custom freshwater or saltwater aquariums. Career is the most useful place to learn how aquatic exhibits fit into a wider conservation and guest-management plan. Sandbox is better for rapidly testing aquarium shapes, viewing routes and decorative concepts. Franchise suits players who want aquatic facilities to become part of a long-running network rather than a one-off build.

Fully flying birds and aviaries
Customizable aviaries introduce a different spatial problem from a ground habitat: vertical volume, flight space and visitor views matter to the design. Use Career when you want objectives to introduce the system, Sandbox when you want to prototype an ambitious aviary, and Franchise when you want bird facilities to serve a wider network strategy.
Wildlife Reserves
Wildlife Reserves allow you to release animals after meeting conservation requirements. They are especially relevant to Career’s conservation adventure and Franchise’s network management. Sandbox is the right laboratory if you want to design a reserve concept without first satisfying a progression requirement.
Construction, blueprints and community creations
Piece-by-piece construction, blueprints, terrain and foliage tools, guest amenities, education systems and the Frontier Workshop are available as part of the broader game toolkit. These tools do not force a particular mode. Your choice changes why you use them: to meet a Career objective, expand a Franchise network or realize a Sandbox design.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Do you want a lesson plan? Choose Career if you want objectives to introduce construction, care, guests, conservation and reserves.
- Do you want several connected locations? Choose Franchise if a growing network is more appealing than a single self-contained zoo.
- Do you want animal trading and shared goals? Choose Franchise. Trading with other players and community goals are central to its official description.
- Do you want to place designs without a required economy? Choose Sandbox. It is the closest match for unrestricted building, although the listing does not specify every available constraint setting.
- Do you want to learn the new aquatic, aviary and reserve systems with context? Choose Career. For unstructured experimentation with those systems, choose Sandbox instead.
Three practical starting plans
Plan A: learn first, then specialize
- Begin in Career and follow its early objectives rather than trying to build every type of exhibit immediately.
- Use the conservation projects and reserve tasks to understand how animal welfare, guest needs and conservation fit together.
- After you know which systems you enjoy, start a Sandbox project for freeform design or a Franchise network for persistent management.
Plan B: build a connected conservation network
- Start Franchise if you already understand management-game fundamentals.
- Choose an initial zoo concept that gives you room to add aquatic exhibits, aviaries or reserve operations later.
- Use animal trading and community goals as network decisions, not as isolated side activities.
- Review your locations through Planet Hub as the network expands.
Plan C: prototype a dream zoo
- Start Sandbox with a clear design brief, such as an aquarium-led park, a bird sanctuary or a reserve-focused visitor route.
- Lay out terrain, circulation, habitats and guest amenities before committing to decorative detail.
- Use blueprints and the Frontier Workshop when a repeatable structure or community creation saves time.
- If you later want objectives or persistent trading, carry the design lessons into Career or Franchise.
Release, platforms and edition pricing

The mode recommendation does not depend on buying a particular edition. The relevant choice is whether you want guided progression, network management or creative freedom.
Common selection mistakes
Choosing Franchise when you really want a building tool
Trading and network management are strengths only if you want them. If your ideal session is placing habitats and scenery without worrying about market decisions, begin in Sandbox.
Choosing Sandbox and then wondering where the goals went
Sandbox is intentionally open-ended. If you need a sequence of objectives or a conservation narrative to tell you what to do next, Career will provide more direction.

Expecting Planet Hub to be a separate campaign
Planet Hub is a network overview. Pick one of the three launch modes for the actual style of play, then use the hub to manage the locations and activity that mode creates.
Assuming Challenge is a launch option
Challenge is not named in the official launch announcement or Steam listing. Check the mode list in your current version rather than relying on older guides or assumptions about the series.
The bottom line
Career is the best default recommendation because it teaches Planet Zoo 2’s unusually broad conservation toolkit while giving you concrete objectives. Franchise is the better long-term home for players who want a persistent network, animal trading and community goals. Sandbox is the correct answer for unrestricted creative construction and experimentation. Planet Hub helps organize what you build, while Challenge is not an officially listed launch mode.
