The best ecommerce chatbot is the one that connects safely to your store and handles the customer job you actually need: answering product questions, checking order status, guiding shoppers, or routing support requests to a person. Start with platform compatibility and data permissions, then compare task coverage, channels, handoff, answer quality, usage limits, and total cost. There is no established universal winner for every store.
Start with the job, not the label “AI chatbot”
Ecommerce chat tools range from systems that answer open-ended questions using store content to virtual agents configured to complete specific tasks. A bot may explain a return policy without being able to initiate a return, or answer an order-status question only if it can access the relevant order data. The difference is the data and actions it is connected and permitted to use.

- Order support: retrieve order information or provide status updates using authorized order data.
- Sales assistance: help shoppers decide what to buy, without making unsupported claims about a product.
- Agent assistance: help staff find information or draft replies while a human remains responsible for the conversation.
These are distinct jobs. A tool that is good at drafting replies is not automatically a customer-facing agent, and a bot that answers FAQs is not necessarily able to perform a return workflow.

Compare the main options by role
| Option | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Inbox | Shopify stores starting with live chat and AI-assisted replies | Shopify describes it as free and supports store-content-based suggested answers and replies. Check the merchant account for exact feature availability. |
| Shopify Sidekick | Shopify merchants seeking help with store administration | An admin assistant, not a shopper-facing storefront support chatbot. |
| Third-party Shopify apps | Stores needing capabilities beyond a native starting point | Shopify’s July 2026 guide names several apps, but their features, prices, and allowances differ and should be read as a dated snapshot. |
| Boost.ai | Organizations evaluating enterprise conversational AI | Shopify’s ecommerce AI guide lists it as an enterprise option with custom pricing; that does not establish fit for an individual retailer. |
| Tools for other commerce platforms | Stores on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, or custom systems | Do not assume a Shopify app works with another platform. Confirm the actual integration and permissions. |
Check platform integration and data permissions first
Confirm that the product supports your specific store platform and the account or edition you use. Shopify’s ecommerce AI guide advises checking whether a tool connects with the existing platform and tech stack before evaluating other features. Shopify’s ecommerce AI tools guide is a starting point for understanding that platform-first approach.
Then find out what the chatbot can access and what it can change. Catalog information may be enough to answer product questions; order lookups need order access; ticket or customer-service workflows may need access to a help desk or customer records. Read the app’s requested permissions and determine whether actions require staff approval. Shopify says merchants control access for third-party AI connections, but permissions and available controls depend on the connection.
Shopify Help Center warns that “AI outputs can contain errors, so review anything a tool creates or changes.” That caution matters both for customer-facing answers and for actions involving store data. Shopify’s AI-powered tools documentation explains the platform’s guidance.

Test whether it can handle your real conversations
Use representative questions from your own store rather than generic demo prompts. Include easy questions, edge cases, and requests that should be escalated. For each one, note whether the tool answers from an approved source, takes the required action, or clearly declines and routes the customer onward.

- Policy questions: Ask about shipping, exchanges, refunds, and exceptions. Confirm that answers match the current policy wording.
- Order questions: Test an authorized order lookup and confirm that the chatbot requests appropriate verification rather than exposing another customer’s information.
- Action requests: Ask it to perform the return or change you care about. Distinguish a correct explanation of the process from actually completing it.
- Unclear or unsupported requests: Check whether the bot admits uncertainty and offers a human route instead of inventing an answer.
Keep a record of incorrect, incomplete, and confidently phrased but unsupported responses. Ask who can update the knowledge source and how quickly changes to products and policies appear in answers.
Evaluate channels and human handoff
Decide where customers need help: website chat, email, messaging channels, or a combination. A chatbot limited to website chat may be sufficient for a store with one support entry point. A team already working across channels may value integration with its existing help desk or CRM, so conversations and context do not become isolated.
Human handoff should be configured as part of the workflow. Establish the conditions that trigger escalation, what context passes to the agent, when a person is available, and what the customer sees outside staffed hours. Test a handoff during the same conversation: the bot should not leave customers repeating information that it already collected.
Shopify’s July 2026 customer-service guide attributes to SurveyMonkey’s 2025 study the finding that 89% of consumers believe companies should always offer the option to speak to a human if required. This is a consumer-preference figure, not evidence that a particular chatbot improves outcomes. Shopify’s customer-service guide provides the attribution.

Compare limits and total cost at expected usage
Prices and allowances can change, and Shopify’s cited app comparison is a July 2026 snapshot rather than a guarantee of current terms. Compare the live plan details for the exact product and region before budgeting. The material comparison is not just the entry price:
- Monthly or annual subscription and any required base help-desk plan.
- Included conversations, resolutions, AI replies, or other usage units.
- Charges for overages, additional agents, channels, or integrations.
- Whether the features you need are included in the relevant tier.
- Any usage cap that could interrupt service during a busy period.
Estimate volume from the store’s actual support traffic, then compare the plan allowance with that demand. Do not treat a free tier, trial, or one-time allowance as proof that the service will remain free at normal operating volume.
Shopify-specific starting points and examples
Shopify Inbox
Shopify describes Inbox as a free live-chat tool for Shopify merchants, with AI-suggested instant answers and replies based on store content. Its customer-service guide also describes cart and order context, order-status updates, and the ability to continue conversations through email. These are Shopify-specific claims; check the features available in the merchant’s account rather than assuming every feature applies to every setup. Inbox is a reasonable baseline when the need is native Shopify chat and assisted replies.
Shopify Sidekick
Sidekick is an assistant for operating a Shopify store, including administrative help, guidance, and content-related tasks. It is not the same category as a chatbot answering shoppers on a storefront. Consider it for merchant-side work, not as a substitute for customer-facing support unless a specific, verified feature serves that use case.
Rank #4
Third-party Shopify apps
Shopify’s July 2026 customer-service guide lists Gladly, Moose, Reamaze, Rep AI, and Gorgias among third-party options. The guide presents differences in features and usage allowances, but its app details, ratings, pricing, and trials are a dated Shopify-authored snapshot, not independent comparative testing. Evaluate a candidate against the integration, access, channel, task, escalation, and cost requirements above; confirm current details on the vendor’s own product and pricing pages before purchase.
Boost.ai
Shopify’s ecommerce AI tools guide identifies Boost.ai as an enterprise conversational AI option and says pricing is custom. That establishes neither a particular retailer’s eligibility nor that the product is the right fit. Larger organizations can include it in an enterprise evaluation when they need a broader conversational AI platform.

If your store runs on Shopify
Start by deciding whether Shopify Inbox covers the immediate need for live chat and assisted replies. If it does not, compare third-party apps against the workflows and permissions you actually need. Shopify’s guides distinguish Inbox from Sidekick: one is customer-facing chat, while the other assists with store administration.

Verify the integration for WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, Wix, WordPress, or your custom storefront directly. A listing in a Shopify app guide does not establish compatibility elsewhere. Check what the integration can read and do on your platform, not just whether a vendor uses the phrase “ecommerce integration.”
If your support team already uses a help desk
Prioritize continuity: determine whether the chatbot can route conversations into the team’s existing queue with customer and order context intact. If it cannot, account for the extra work of switching systems or manually transferring details.
A practical selection checklist
- The product supports your commerce platform and required account edition.
- Its data permissions cover the intended task without granting unnecessary access.
- It answers from current product and policy information, and has a way to correct stale or incorrect content.
- It can distinguish answering a question from completing an action.
- It supports the channels your customers and agents actually use.
- Escalation rules, agent availability, and conversation context are clear.
- Usage allowances and extra charges fit expected traffic.
- Store staff can review outputs and manage changes that affect customers or store data.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Shopify reports that in a 2025 survey of 500 established merchants across Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United States, 75% said they used AI tools, 55% said AI saved time on repetitive tasks, and 69% used AI for content generation. Those figures concern AI generally, not ecommerce chatbot adoption or chatbot performance. Shopify’s guides do not establish a controlled head-to-head winner, store-specific conversion lift, or independently verified resolution rates across commerce platforms.
That makes fit a workflow decision rather than a brand leaderboard: the strongest candidate is the one that performs the store’s defined tasks accurately, within appropriate access controls, and with a reliable route to a person when automation is not enough.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a chatbot check an ecommerce order’s status?
It can if the chatbot is connected to authorized order data and configured for that task. Confirm how customers are verified and what happens when the bot cannot retrieve an order.
Do I need an AI chatbot or live chat?
They solve different needs. Live chat connects customers with staff; AI can suggest replies or answer and potentially complete configured tasks. A store can use AI assistance alongside a human chat workflow.
How do I hand a chatbot conversation to a person?
Configure escalation triggers, agent availability, and the information transferred to staff. Test the handoff so the agent receives the conversation context and the customer knows what to expect.
Is Shopify Sidekick a customer-facing chatbot?
No. Shopify describes Sidekick as an assistant for store administration. Shopify Inbox is the customer-facing live-chat option among the products described here.
