How to Choose Smart-Home Devices With Long-Term Security Support

A Matter badge does not promise years of patches. Learn how to verify a smart-home device’s support period, update process, cloud dependencies, and end-of-support plan.

Choose a smart-home device only after you can verify security support for its exact model and region. Look for a published update duration or end date, find out what that commitment covers, and check how updates are verified and announced. Matter compatibility, a current app, or a retailer’s “works with” label is not a substitute for a manufacturer’s support policy.

Start with the support commitment for the exact model

Before comparing features, search the manufacturer’s site for a security-support policy covering the precise model number and market where you plan to use it. A vague statement such as “regular updates” does not tell you how long support lasts. Look for a specific duration or end-of-support date, and check what starts the clock: product launch, purchase, or another date. If the manufacturer does not say, treat the period as unknown rather than inferring it from the brand’s reputation or the product’s age.

Check the commitment’s scope, too. Support for device firmware does not necessarily mean the companion app, hub or controller, and cloud services will all be maintained for the same period. Record each component separately if the policy distinguishes them.

Check how updates are delivered and verified

A device needs more than the theoretical ability to accept an update: the maker needs a credible way to deliver security fixes and tell you when action is required. NIST’s 2022 consumer IoT cybersecurity criteria say each product component should be able to receive, verify, and apply verified software updates. They also call for keeping components up to date through automatic updates or consistent customer notification.

  • Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
  • Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).
  • Update integrity: Does the maker explain that updates are authenticated or otherwise verified before installation?
  • Delivery: Are updates installed automatically, or does the app or manufacturer consistently notify owners when an update is available?
  • Visibility: Can you find the installed firmware version and, ideally, an update history?
  • Coverage: Does the update mechanism cover all relevant components, rather than only the device firmware?

These checks distinguish a product’s update capability from a dated promise to maintain it. NIST’s criteria are recommendations for consumer IoT cybersecurity labeling; they do not mean every product has been evaluated against them.

Understand what Matter certification tells you—and what it does not

Matter can provide interoperability and security mechanisms, including device identity, encrypted data, and fine-grained access control. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) says Matter supports over-the-air updates, though devices may also use their own update methods. Certification records are included in the CSA’s Distributed Compliance Ledger. These features can be useful, but certification does not state how many years a particular model will receive security updates.

Blink Outdoor 4 – Wireless smart security camera, two-year battery life, 1080p HD day and infrared night live view, two-way talk. Sync Module Core included – 3 camera system
  • Outdoor 4 is our most affordable wireless smart security camera yet, offering up to two-year battery life for around-the-clock peace of mind. Local storage not included with Sync Module Core.
  • See and speak from the Blink app — Experience 1080p HD live view, infrared night vision, and crisp two-way audio.
  • Two-year battery life — Set up in minutes and get up to two years of power with the included AA Energizer lithium batteries and a Blink Sync Module Core.
  • Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
  • Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).

Nor does Matter mean every existing smart-home product will be upgraded. As the CSA explains, whether a device receives a Matter update depends on its technical capabilities and whether its maker chooses to offer one. Check the manufacturer’s support policy for the exact model separately from its Matter status. If Matter certification is important to your purchase, verify that it applies to that model rather than relying on a product-family description.

Do not treat a consumer security label as a guarantee either. Check which model was assessed, what the label covers, who issued it, and whether the listing is current. NIST’s program information describes criteria and desired outcomes, not a live registry establishing current participation by specific products.

Check privacy, cloud reliance, and what happens offline

Read the privacy policy to understand what data the device collects, how it is retained, who can access it—including service providers—and how it can be deleted. NIST manufacturer guidance encourages clear information about update frequency and authorization, update sources, privacy capabilities, and limitations. Security support and privacy are related purchasing questions, but neither one establishes the other.

Find out which features depend on an account, the internet, the manufacturer’s cloud, the app, or an in-home hub. Matter is local connectivity, but remote control of Matter-only devices requires an internet-connected controller in the home. Some devices instead connect directly to the internet through the manufacturer’s app. These are different service arrangements; the architecture alone does not prove that one is universally safer. Ask what continues to work if a service is unavailable or discontinued.

Compare devices with a buyer checklist

  1. Identify the exact model and region. Save the manufacturer’s policy page for the model and market you intend to buy in.
  2. Find the support period. Record the published end date or duration and the event from which it is counted. If it is not stated, mark it as unverified.
  3. Map the coverage. Check whether the commitment includes firmware, the mobile app, hub or controller, and related cloud services.
  4. Inspect update handling. Confirm how updates are verified, installed, and announced, and whether you can check the installed version.
  5. Review data practices. Locate the policy’s explanations of data collection, retention, access, and deletion.
  6. Verify standards claims. If Matter is a requirement, confirm certification for the specific model; do not use it as evidence of update duration.
  7. Test the dependency story. Determine what works without internet, hub, app, or cloud access, and what would stop if a service ended.
  8. Look for an end-of-support plan. Check how customers will be notified and how to reset, remove data from, or dispose of the device securely.

Use the same checklist for each candidate. If one maker publishes a clear, model-specific commitment and another does not, that is a meaningful difference in what you can verify—even if the products share a connectivity standard.

Plan for the end of support

Security vulnerabilities can be discovered after a product is deployed, so a device that no longer receives patches may become riskier to keep connected. Ask how the maker will notify owners that support is ending, whether cloud-dependent features will continue, and whether there is a safe reset and data-removal process. If continued use after support ends is unavoidable, consider whether isolating the device from sensitive parts of the network is practical; otherwise, plan for replacement or secure disposal.

NIST’s draft consumer IoT labeling criteria identify maintenance after support ends and secure re-provisioning or disposal as useful information for customers. In a 2022 study summary, NIST reported surveying 412 smart-home users and warned that unsupported, unpatched devices may remain connected when people are not alerted to the end of support or do not understand its implications. An earlier NIST interview study summarized findings from 40 users, including confusion about update methods and whether updates had been applied. These sample findings identify problems worth guarding against; they do not establish how common those experiences are among all smart-home users.

Sources and scope

The criteria and research cited here are U.S. government guidance and study summaries from NIST, alongside CSA materials describing Matter. Support commitments, applicable rules, and product availability can vary by jurisdiction, manufacturer, model, and time. None of these sources establishes which currently available products have the longest support periods, so verify current terms directly with the manufacturer.
