Often, yes—but there is no universal AI-off switch for smart-home devices. You may be able to disable a particular camera feature or change an assistant setting while ordinary device controls continue. Exactly what keeps working depends on the device, the feature, and whether it runs locally or relies on the manufacturer’s cloud.
What does turning off AI actually disable?
“AI” is not necessarily one device-wide setting. A camera’s descriptions or recognition, a voice assistant, personalization, and activity history may each have separate controls. Turning off one does not establish that all AI processing, data collection, or device activity has stopped.

Start with the manufacturer, exact model, feature name, app, and software version. In the device’s current app or manual, look separately for controls relating to:
- AI descriptions, recognition, or event analysis;
- the voice assistant or assistant platform;
- personal results and personalization;
- activity history, data sharing, or stored records.
Changing a history or personalization setting is not the same as disabling an assistant or the device’s AI processing. Google, for example, documents Home History and personal-results settings separately from camera feature controls and Gemini for Home voice-assistant settings. Google’s Home History guidance explains the history controls.

How to turn off a documented Google Home camera feature
Google documents a camera-specific setting for Gemini for Home camera features. In the Home app, the path is:
- Open Home and select Cameras.
- Select the camera.
- Open its player or settings, then select Events.
- Turn off Gemini for Home camera features.
Google says the setting can be managed for selected cameras or turned off. Its documentation does not say that the camera itself must be disabled when these AI features are off, nor does it establish what happens to every model’s detection, recording, alerts, or remote access. Menu names may change; consult Google’s current camera-feature instructions if the path differs.

What may continue working locally?
Some smart-home commands can run over the home network without an internet connection, but this is not a promise that a whole device or home works offline. Google says Matter-enabled devices are designed to carry out supported commands locally over the existing home network without needing an internet cloud connection. That applies to supported Matter commands, not automatically to proprietary AI features or every integration. See Google’s Matter setup and control guidance.
Apple describes Home accessories as controlled by Apple devices rather than the cloud and identifies Matter compatibility in its Home accessories information. Amazon’s developer documentation describes local connectivity options between Echo devices and smart-home products; those connections can help keep voice interactions responsive when internet or cloud infrastructure is unavailable. These are platform capabilities, not guarantees for every accessory, routine, or voice request. See Amazon’s local connectivity documentation.

- Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
- Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported

- Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
Local control and AI settings answer different questions. Disabling an AI feature does not by itself tell you whether a device’s ordinary controls are local, and Matter support does not prove that a vendor’s analysis, history, notifications, or remote app access will work without a cloud connection.

- basic controls, such as turning a light on or adjusting a thermostat;
- schedules and automations, including whether they still run without internet;
- recording and where recordings are stored;
- alerts and notifications, including whether they depend on a cloud service;
- remote access through the app when you are away from home;
- manual controls and the device’s behavior during an internet outage.
These are checks, not functions guaranteed to survive an AI setting change or outage. The outcome depends on the exact model, named feature, software version, and how that feature is implemented. For a safety- or security-related device, follow its model-specific instructions and test its stated fallback behavior; Google cautions that smart-home controls are for convenience, not safety- or security-critical purposes.

Changing the voice assistant is a separate decision
Turning off a camera feature is different from switching the home’s voice assistant. Google says that after a home switches to the Gemini for Home voice assistant, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Availability is also limited by eligible devices, languages, and countries as the feature rolls out. Check Google’s Gemini for Home voice-assistant guidance before changing platforms.
A practical rule for deciding what to disable
If your concern is a specific AI function, find that function’s individual control rather than assuming a device-wide switch exists. If your concern is privacy, review history, personalization, and data-sharing settings separately. If your concern is reliability, identify which commands and automations are documented to run locally, then test the exact functions you need. No general platform statement can establish what an unspecified device will retain.
