1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose Mac Studio memory for the largest workload you expect to keep active at once, and choose SSD capacity for the apps, projects and libraries you want stored locally. They solve different problems: unified memory supports active work, while storage holds software and files. Apple’s current specifications list M4 Max configurations up to 128GB of unified memory and 8TB SSD, and M3 Ultra configurations up to 256GB of memory and 16TB SSD; Apple’s launch announcement gives a conflicting 512GB M3 Ultra maximum, so check the live configurator before ordering if that option matters.
Mac Studio memory and storage options
Apple calls system RAM “unified memory.” It is shared by the system and the work running on it; SSD capacity is where installed applications and files are stored. Adding storage does not add memory, and an external drive cannot substitute for unified memory.

Apple’s current Mac Studio (2025) technical specifications list these starting and configurable capacities:
Recommended Free Tools
| Configuration | Starting unified memory | Listed memory options | Starting SSD | Listed SSD options |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M4 Max | 36GB | 48GB, 64GB or 128GB | 512GB | 1TB, 2TB, 4TB or 8TB |
| M3 Ultra | 96GB | 256GB | 1TB | 2TB, 4TB, 8TB or 16TB |
The M3 Ultra memory ceiling is not consistent across Apple’s published material. The current support page lists 256GB, while Apple’s March 5, 2025 launch announcement says M3 Ultra can be configured with up to 512GB. For a purchase, treat the support page as the current listed configuration and verify availability in Apple’s regional live configurator; do not assume 512GB is orderable.

- MACOS RUNS APPS FAST — All your go-to apps run lightning fast in macOS, including built-in apps like FaceTime and Messages. Plus, built-in virus protection and free software updates help keep your Mac running smoothly and securely.
Apple notes that 1GB is 1 billion bytes and 1TB is 1 trillion bytes, so formatted capacity is lower than the nominal figure shown in a configuration.
How much unified memory should you choose?
Base the choice on how much work needs to remain open and responsive together, rather than on a job title alone. Larger projects, demanding applications and several heavy applications used concurrently can make memory capacity more consequential. Apple does not publish a universal memory minimum for video editing, development, engineering, photography or AI workloads in the cited product material.

- If you already use a Mac, check its memory use while working on representative projects. Your observed peak under real conditions is a better personal clue than a generic claim that every professional needs a particular amount.
- If you are buying your first Mac or cannot measure a representative workload, list the applications and project sizes you expect to run together, then choose a configuration with enough capacity for that active workload.
- If you regularly work with especially large projects or high CPU/GPU workloads, compare whether the M3 Ultra’s higher core-count tier and listed memory options fit the work. Do not choose it solely because its maximum figure is larger.
Apple describes M4 Max as aimed at uses including video editing, color grading, development, engineering and photography, and positions M3 Ultra for workloads that use high CPU and GPU core counts and large amounts of unified memory. These are Apple’s descriptions of intended use, not independent sizing rules.

How much internal SSD storage should you choose?
Estimate the space needed for applications, current working files and local libraries, plus the material you want immediately available without connecting another drive. A larger internal SSD means less need to move active material elsewhere, but Apple does not provide a personalized capacity formula or a recommended free-space reserve.

- Count the applications and libraries you expect to keep installed.
- Account for the current projects and files you need to access locally, not just archived work.
- Choose a higher capacity if moving or reconnecting active work would routinely interrupt your workflow.
External storage can complement the internal SSD for less frequently accessed projects or archives. Apple identifies Thunderbolt 5 as enabling faster external storage and expansion, but that does not establish the speed or compatibility of a particular drive. Check a drive’s interface and compatibility with your Mac Studio, and consult independent performance evidence for the specific model before buying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When does M3 Ultra make more sense than M4 Max?
Compare the configurations against the workload, not a single headline number. Consider whether your work benefits from higher CPU/GPU core counts, whether its peak active memory needs exceed the M4 Max options, and how much local SSD capacity you need. M3 Ultra is also the tier to consider when the named workload profile—such as demanding CPU/GPU work or local AI/ML—matches your use.

- SUPERCHARGED BY M3 PRO OR M3 MAX — The Apple M3 Pro chip, with a 12-core CPU and 18-core GPU, delivers amazing performance for demanding workflows like manipulating gigapixel panoramas or compiling millions of lines of code. M3 Max, with an up to 16-core CPU and up to 40-core GPU, drives extreme performance for the most advanced workflows like rendering intricate 3D content or developing transformer models with billions of parameters.
- UP TO 22 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Go all day thanks to the power-efficient design of Apple silicon. The MacBook Pro laptop delivers the same exceptional performance whether it’s running on battery or plugged in. (Battery life varies by use and configuration. See apple.com/batteries for more information.)
- BRILLIANT PRO DISPLAY — The 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display features Extreme Dynamic Range, over 1000 nits of brightness for stunning HDR content, up to 600 nits of brightness for SDR content, and pro reference modes for doing your best work on the go. (The display has rounded corners at the top. When measured diagonally, the screen is 16.2 inches. Actual viewable area is less.)
- FULLY COMPATIBLE — All your pro apps run lightning fast — including Adobe Creative Cloud, Apple Xcode, Microsoft 365, SideFX Houdini, MathWorks MATLAB, Medivis SurgicalAR, and many of your favorite iPhone and iPad apps. And with macOS, work and play on your Mac are even more powerful. Elevate your presence on video calls. Access information in all-new ways. And discover even more ways to personalize your Mac. (Apps are available on the App Store.)
- ADVANCED CAMERA AND AUDIO — Look sharp and sound great with a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, a studio-quality three-mic array, and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio.
Apple says M3 Ultra is nearly 2x faster than M4 Max in workloads that take advantage of high CPU/GPU core counts and massive unified memory. That is a vendor claim limited to those workloads, not a prediction that every application or task will run twice as fast. Apple’s intended-use examples are illustrative rather than hard boundaries: software, project size and workflow can change which configuration is appropriate.

Make the configuration decision
- Identify your heaviest normal workload. Consider the applications and projects you need active at the same time, rather than an occasional best-case or worst-case task.
- Size unified memory around that active work. Use measured memory use from a representative existing setup if available; otherwise, compare your expected workload with the available configurations without treating any one profession as having a fixed requirement.
- Size the internal SSD around local access. Include installed software, active projects and libraries that should remain on the computer. Separate archives and less-active files that could live on external storage.
- Compare M4 Max and M3 Ultra by workload fit. Check core-count demands, peak memory needs and the internal SSD capacities offered for each tier. Do not apply Apple’s nearly-2x comparison to work outside the subset it describes.
- Confirm the actual orderable configuration. Apple’s published sources disagree on the M3 Ultra memory maximum. Check the live Apple configurator for your region before committing to 256GB versus 512GB or making a purchase based on that capacity.
