For a PS4, use a conventional thermal paste labeled for electronics or processor use—not liquid metal as a beginner substitute. Replacing it means opening the console and performing a substantial teardown, and the exact steps depend on the console’s model number. Identify the CUH model before choosing a repair guide or tools.
What thermal paste should you use in a PS4?
Choose ordinary, nonconductive thermal paste intended for electronics. iFixit names Arctic MX-4 as an example used in a PS4 Pro comparison, but that does not make it a universal winner or a required product. The comparison also includes liquid metal, but that is not an interchangeable beginner option. iFixit’s PS4 paste replacement guide and its PS4 Pro comparison do not establish a universal brand ranking or prove which compound performs best across all console revisions.

- Look for clear labeling that the paste is suitable for electronics or processor use.
- Use a small amount after removing the old compound; follow the amount and application approach in your exact model’s guide.
- Do not choose by an unsupported conductivity rating or assume every paste marketed for computers is suitable for this repair.
No universal replacement schedule is established by the cited guides. A specific temperature or fan-noise improvement is not guaranteed either.
Check your PS4 model before opening it
Find the CUH model number on the console’s label and match it to a guide for that exact variant. PS4 Pro revisions do not all share the same hardware or retaining fasteners. For example, iFixit’s CUH-7200-series guide covers CUH-7200, CUH-7215B, CUH-7216B, and CUH-7217; other Pro generations have separate guides.

Use the matching guide’s tool list rather than assuming one kit fits every PS4. A model-specific list may include a TR8 Torx security driver and Phillips drivers, but the required set varies with the console and the extent of disassembly. The standard PS4 repair guide also shows that reaching the processor requires removing the outer cover and internal components; this is not an external cleaning task.
What replacing PS4 thermal paste involves
The broad workflow is similar across repairs, but the disassembly sequence is model-specific. Follow the guide for your CUH number from start to finish; do not use these overview steps as a substitute for its fastener locations and component order.

- Prepare the repair. Turn off and unplug the console, then gather the tools specified by the model-matched guide. Keep track of screws and parts as you remove them.
- Open the console and remove the necessary components. Work through the guide’s exact sequence to reach the motherboard and processor area. Expect a substantial teardown.
- Clean away the old compound. Remove the old paste from the processor contact surfaces as directed by the guide before applying new paste.
- Apply a small amount of new paste. Use the method shown in the matching guide, then reinstall the board and other components in the prescribed order.
- Reassemble and check the console. Confirm that all parts and fasteners are back in place before reconnecting power.
For the standard model, the iFixit PS4 guide documents the teardown and paste workflow. Use a separate guide for a PS4 Pro or another revision.
Consider the safety and warranty implications
Sony’s regional PS4 Safety Guide for CUH-72XXB says, “Never disassemble or modify the system or accessories.” It states that the PS4 has no user-serviceable components and warns of electrical-shock and laser-radiation risks. The guide also cautions that unauthorized opening or service can affect warranty coverage. Warranty terms and consumer rights vary by region, so check the current terms for your country and your console before opening it.
