Choose the correct government rules first
There is no universal passport-photo specification. Requirements can differ by country and by application route, including between digital uploads and printed photos. A checker should ask for the country, document, and submission type before it evaluates an image; its rules should remain configurable and tied to the relevant official guidance.

For example, Canada’s official guidance explicitly distinguishes digital-photo specifications from physical-photo specifications. The figures below are examples for particular routes, not general passport-photo standards.

Official instructions can change, and the table is not an exhaustive account of eligibility rules, exceptions, or every application type. Confirm the current guidance for the exact application before relying on a check.

What MediaPipe measures
MediaPipe’s FaceLandmarker returns face landmarks in normalized image coordinates and supports image, video, and live-stream modes. Its FaceDetector returns a face bounding box in the coordinate system of the unrotated input image. These outputs can help a checker locate a face and estimate its placement and scale. For a photo the user has uploaded, image-mode analysis is a natural fit. A checker can compare the measured face with the selected rule set and show an overlay or guidance. Keep rotation, cropping, and coordinate calculations consistent: the detector’s box is expressed relative to the unrotated input, so comparing it with a differently rotated or cropped preview can produce a misleading result.

In live-stream mode, MediaPipe may drop input frames to reduce latency. A camera preview should therefore not assume every frame receives an analysis result. The cited API reference documents the Python task API; it does not establish current JavaScript setup instructions or browser compatibility, so implementation details should be verified against the specific package and browser being used.

A useful checker makes clear what it actually measured. Face presence, approximate position, and scale are reasonable candidates for measurement from landmarks or a bounding box. File dimensions and file size can be checked directly from the image file. Other requirements need different forms of assessment, and some are subjective or cannot be inferred from pixels alone.

- Face framing: report the detected face location and approximate size against the selected route’s rules. Treat the result as an estimate, not a government decision.
- Image and file properties: check dimensions and file size where the selected application publishes limits. Do not apply a digital-upload limit to a print application.
- Background, shadows, and lighting: flag possible issues only if the checker has a separate method for evaluating them; face landmarks alone do not establish a plain background or acceptable lighting.
- Pose and eyes: a face location is not proof that the applicant is facing forward or that the eyes meet the required conditions.
- Editing and authenticity: a checker should not claim that an image is unaltered merely because it looks plausible. Official rules may prohibit filters or digital changes.
Label uncertain findings as warnings or items to review rather than presenting them as confirmed failures or approvals. The U.S. State Department says its online-renewal photo tool checks basic requirements and that an employee reviews the photo after submission. That distinction is a useful model: automated checks can help catch issues without replacing the issuing authority’s decision.
A practical workflow for a browser checker
- Select the issuing authority and route. Identify the country, document, and whether the photo is for a digital submission or a paper application. Load the applicable official criteria rather than a generic “passport size.”
- Read the source requirements. Record the rules for framing, pose, background, image quality, file dimensions, file size, and editing that apply to that exact route. Keep each rule associated with its official source.
- Analyze the image in a consistent coordinate system. Use image-mode face analysis for a static upload. Apply rotation and crop transformations consistently to both the image shown to the user and the measurements used for comparison.
- Report measurements and uncertainty separately. Explain the face-position or scale estimate, list directly verified file properties, and identify visual criteria that need the user’s review. Do not turn a model’s output into a guarantee of acceptance.
- Check the final output against the application instructions. If the user needs a print, distinguish the physical print size and head-height requirements from digital file checks. If the user needs an upload, verify the route’s actual file limits.
What to look for when choosing a checker or photo service
Whether using a browser checker or a service that prepares photos, assess it against the application you will submit. A polished preview alone does not show that the correct government rules were applied.

- Does it say which criteria are measured automatically and which require human judgment?
- Does it explain whether it returns a crop, a resized file, or guidance on the original?
- Does it identify the official rules behind its checks and avoid promising government acceptance?
These distinctions matter because official requirements vary, and passing basic checks does not settle every criterion or the issuing authority’s review.
Prepare the photo without assuming a backdrop is enough
For the cited U.S. routes, the State Department calls for a white or off-white background; UK digital guidance calls for a plain light-coloured background. A plain backdrop may help create the required background, but it does not ensure even lighting or compliance with pose, framing, image-quality, file, or editing rules. Follow the selected authority’s instructions for the actual application.
