Choose by fit and use, not by assuming one open-ear style is best. Clip-ons may leave more room behind the ear for glasses or hats; ear-hooks add a behind-ear anchor that can feel more settled during repeated movement. Bone conduction is a different sound-transmission method, not a third kind of support: it sends vibration through facial and skull bones. Fit varies by person and product, so try the exact model with your usual accessories and activity.
First, separate the support style from the sound method
“Clip-on” and “ear-hook” describe how an earbud is held in place. A clip rests around the outer ear; a hook extends behind it. Both commonly use air-conduction speakers that send sound through the air toward the ear canal.

“Bone conduction” describes how sound is transmitted: the device vibrates against the face, sending vibration through facial or skull bones toward the inner ear. A bone-conduction model may also use a hook or band for support. That means these labels are not three perfectly parallel categories.

| Approach | Try it first when | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Clip-on open-ear | You want to keep the area behind your ear relatively clear for glasses or headwear, or prefer a low-profile contact around the outer ear. | Whether the clip presses, shifts, touches your glasses, or positions its speaker well for your ear. |
| Ear-hook open-ear | Retention during repeated movement is a priority and you are comfortable with a support that sits behind the ear. | Hook pressure, contact with glasses, and whether it stays comfortable and stable through the movement you actually do. |
| Bone conduction | You want this transmission approach and an unobstructed ear area. | Contact pressure, vibration feel, sound expectations, and suitability for your activity. Support may still involve a hook or band. |
These are starting points, not guarantees. Soundcore’s fit guide, dated September 24, 2026, says clip-ons usually leave more space behind the ear for glasses and hats, while ear-hooks usually provide a steadier anchor during repeated movement. It also notes that ear shape, frame thickness, hat design, and the particular product can change the result.

Check comfort with your real glasses or headwear
A quick try-on can miss pressure that becomes noticeable after a while. Soundcore recommends putting glasses or sunglasses on first, adding the earbuds, checking whether the frames move or create pressure, then wearing the combination for 20–30 minutes. Treat that interval as a practical fit check, not a clinical standard.
- Put on your usual accessories. Use the glasses, sunglasses, hat, or helmet you expect to wear with the earbuds.
- Add the earbuds and check contact. Notice whether a clip, hook, or speaker presses against your ear or interferes with a frame or strap.
- Move as you would during normal use. Walk, turn your head, or do the relevant workout movements. See whether the earbuds shift or need frequent adjustment.
- Wear the combination for a while. Check for pressure or discomfort that was not apparent at first.
For example, Soundcore describes its AeroFit 2 as having four hook positions and an adjustable ear-hook fit; its claims about leakage and an IP55 rating are manufacturer claims, not independent comparisons. Philips’ product sheet for the TAA8606WT/00, issued May 10, 2023, describes a bone-conduction true-wireless model with a flexible rubber hook, IPX5 rating, and stated playback of four hours for the earbuds plus 12 hours from the case. That older sheet is an example, not a current recommendation; confirm availability and specifications for your region before buying.

Know what open-ear sound can and cannot do
Open-ear headphones leave the ear area less obstructed than sealed in-ear designs, but they do not guarantee that you will notice your surroundings. Awareness depends on listening volume, environmental noise, attention, fit, and product design. Do not treat any headphones as making running, cycling, or road use safe; stay attentive to the conditions around you.

Bose explains that air conduction sends sound through the ear canal, while bone conduction sends vibration through the cheekbones toward the inner ear. Omdia identifies sound leakage, limited low-frequency performance, and sensitivity to wind noise as persistent constraints for open-ear structures. How much sound leaks varies with fit, speaker position, acoustic design, and volume. If you need strong isolation, private listening in a quiet room, or dependable protection from loud noise, open-ear headphones are a poor match for that need.

Protect your hearing with any headphone type
The CDC says hearing risk depends on how loud sound is and how long you hear it. Turn the volume down, take breaks, move away from loud noise when possible, and use hearing protection when loud noise cannot be avoided. Open-ear headphones are not hearing protection.

Open-ear products have grown beyond a niche: Omdia reported that they accounted for more than 10% of the global personal-audio market and exceeded 30 million annual shipments by 2025. That growth does not change the basic choice: the best style for you is the one that fits comfortably, stays put for your intended use, and sounds acceptable at a sensible volume.
