To track results from a printed QR code, add campaign parameters to the destination URL before generating the code, then check the tagged visits in your web analytics. Those visits are not necessarily the same as the number of people who scanned: a scan can fail to load the page, analytics can miss a visit, and a redirect can remove the tags. A reliable workflow connects the printed code, its destination, and the campaign naming convention—and tests the finished print before distribution.
Plan the destination and what you want to measure
Choose the page the code should open, then check that it loads and works well on a phone. Decide which print placements need separate reporting: for example, a brochure and a store poster can use different source values, while two designs for the same campaign can be distinguished with a content value.

Keep the destination, placement, and campaign name together in a simple worksheet. This makes it easier to check that the URL encoded in the QR code matches the values you intend to see in reports.
Add campaign parameters before generating the code
Google Analytics explains that campaign parameters on destination URLs can identify campaigns that refer traffic and appear in acquisition reporting. Use a consistent set of values:
#1 Best Overall

utm_sourceidentifies where the traffic came from, such asbrochureorstore_poster.utm_mediumidentifies the marketing medium, such asprint.utm_campaignidentifies the campaign, such asfall_open_house.
For instance, a tagged destination could look like https://example.com/offer&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=fall_open_house. Replace the example domain and values with your actual page and campaign details. Google’s URL builder guidance recommends these parameters and notes that values are case-sensitive. Use a consistent spelling and capitalization convention across your print materials. If you need to compare two designs or calls to action within one campaign, add utm_content. Do not put personally identifying information in campaign parameters.
Choose how the QR code reaches the page
A code that directly encodes the final tagged URL will continue opening that address. If you later need to change the destination, you generally need to replace the printed code or control a redirect at the encoded address. A managed QR service may provide an editable redirect or its own scan metrics, but those capabilities, terms, pricing, and metric definitions depend on the provider. Check its current documentation before relying on them.

Whichever approach you use, test the entire route. A redirect that drops URL parameters can prevent campaign attribution; Google lists missing UTM tags and parameter-stripping redirects among reasons traffic may appear as (direct) / (none). Offline-document traffic can also be classified that way. See Google Analytics guidance on traffic reported as direct.
Prepare the artwork for print
Keep the QR pattern square, evenly spaced, and high contrast. GS1’s 2D Barcodes at Retail Point-of-Sale Implementation Guideline specifies a quiet zone—the blank margin around the code—of four module widths on every side. Keep text, borders, logos, and other artwork outside that margin. GS1 also warns that distorted modules or poor contrast can make decoding harder; adding a logo can block encoded information and uses some error-correction capacity, so test modified codes carefully. For high-stakes or regulated packaging, use verification appropriate to that context.

There is no single QR-code size established here for every marketing print job. GS1 US advises using high-resolution artwork and printing, with size chosen for the use and print method; its guidance is primarily about retail product barcodes, so retail barcode dimensions should not be treated as universal marketing requirements. Choose a size suited to viewing distance, substrate, and printer, and check a physical proof. Avoid placing the code across a fold, trim line, curve, glossy reflection, or busy background. Put a concise call to action, such as “Scan for the menu,” outside the quiet zone.
Generate, print, and test the code
- Finalize the mobile-friendly destination and campaign values.
- Build the complete tagged URL, including any needed
utm_content, and check its spelling and capitalization. - Generate the QR code from that final URL and export artwork appropriate to the print workflow at high resolution.
- Place it with the four-module quiet zone intact, along with a short call to action outside the blank margin.
- Print a proof at the intended size. Scan it with more than one phone under realistic lighting and viewing conditions.
- Confirm each scan opens the intended page and that the tagged URL survives every redirect. Fix any problems before distributing the material.
Read scan counts and campaign traffic correctly
A scan is an interaction with the code. A tagged visit or session is an analytics record after the destination loads and tracking works. The numbers can differ: someone may scan without the page finishing its load, analytics may be blocked, or a redirect may remove the campaign parameters. A conversion is a later outcome in the visitor journey, not another name for a scan.

- PC editing software: Compatible with Windows and macOS for detailed label design of inventory, product, and office labeling tasks.
Use precise labels in reporting: call Google Analytics results tagged visits, sessions, or campaign traffic. Call a figure “scans” only when a QR provider documents an event metric and explains how it counts one. A provider’s scan dashboard and your website’s campaign acquisition report answer related but different questions.
