Turning off recurring billing does not usually cut off Xbox Game Pass immediately: you can keep using the subscription through its displayed expiry date. Once it expires, you lose access to games you were playing through the catalog, but a Microsoft Community volunteer moderator says your saved progress is not deleted and can be resumed if you renew or buy the game. Xbox’s current page does not say that cancellation automatically uninstalls downloaded game files.
When does Game Pass access end?
Cancellation and expiry are separate events. Microsoft says that if your subscription shows “Turn on recurring billing” rather than a Manage link, recurring billing is already off: the subscription will not charge again automatically, and you can use it until the expiry date shown on your account. Xbox says access to catalog games lasts until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the catalog. Check the Xbox Game Pass page for its current access terms. To avoid another charge, cancel through your Microsoft account or Xbox console before the next billing date.
What happens to games you downloaded?
A download is not the same as owning a game. If you installed a title through the Game Pass catalog, its launch entitlement depends on an active subscription and the game remaining in the catalog. After your subscription expires—or the title leaves the catalog—you should expect to lose access unless you renew or obtain the game separately.

Xbox’s page describes when catalog access ends, but does not say cancellation automatically deletes installed game files. Do not treat the continued presence of files on your console or PC as proof that you still have permission to launch the game.
What happens to your saves and progress?
A Microsoft Community volunteer moderator answered on June 8, 2022 that canceling Game Pass does not affect saved games, and that renewing or buying the game lets you continue where you left off. Read the Community response about saved game files.

This is Community support guidance, not a detailed formal Xbox technical policy covering every game and platform. It addresses save retention, not whether you can launch a catalog game after access ends. Keep those two questions separate: your progress may remain while the subscription-based ability to play the title has ended.

What to do before and after cancellation
- Check the date: In your Microsoft account subscription settings, confirm the displayed expiry date and whether recurring billing is on.
- Stop renewal in time: Turn off recurring billing before the next billing date if you do not want another charge; access continues through the paid period shown by Microsoft.
- Plan for a catalog title: If you want to keep playing after expiry, renew Game Pass while the game remains available or buy the game separately.
- Do not uninstall just to preserve progress: Community guidance says cancellation does not affect saves; the Xbox access page does not establish that downloaded files are automatically removed.
