Record the TV’s actual width and depth, the console with its approved stand or feet, vent and port locations, power-brick and cable-bend space, and the furniture’s clear interior dimensions after doors, dividers and backboards are accounted for. Then select a stable bench or cabinet wider than the screen, position the TV center near seated eye level, and verify ventilation, cable access and tip-over protection.
Start with the measurements that determine whether the setup really fits
A 55-inch, 65-inch or 75-inch label describes a screen’s diagonal, not the width of the television, the footprint of its feet or the clearance your console needs. Furniture listings can also quote an overall exterior size that is reduced substantially by side panels, hinges, doors, dividers and a backboard. Measure both pieces as they will actually be installed.

Measure the wall and circulation zone
- Measure the wall section available, including trim, baseboards and any sloped or obstructed areas.
- Mark the walkway clearance beside and in front of the furniture. A console that technically fits the wall can still make a passage uncomfortable or block a door.
- Locate electrical outlets, network sockets and antenna or optical-audio connections before choosing the cabinet’s final position.
- Note windows and overhead lights so the screen can be placed where glare is minimized.
Measure the television as installed
- Record the straight-across width of the TV, not its diagonal marketing size.
- Measure the stand or feet footprint and the total depth with the supplied stand installed. If you plan to wall-mount it, record the intended wall gap and the position of the mounting bracket.
- Map connector locations on the rear and sides. A side HDMI or USB socket may need clearance beyond the screen’s nominal depth.
- Include space for the power lead to bend without being sharply folded or pressed against the wall.
Measure the console and every accessory
- Use the manufacturer-approved orientation and stand or feet when recording console width, height and depth.
- Mark every ventilation opening, power-connector direction and port that must remain reachable. A console can fit the shelf while a side vent is blocked by a divider.
- Inventory the soundbar, streaming box, router, external drive, charging dock, controllers, headsets and power supplies. Measure bulky adapters separately; they often determine shelf depth.
- Allow room to pull the console out for cleaning, service or a cable change. Do not count a cavity as usable if the equipment cannot be removed without disconnecting or bending leads.
Measure the furniture’s clear usable space
Ask for internal dimensions, not only the outside measurements. Measure clear width between side panels and dividers, clear height under shelves, and clear depth from the front edge to the backboard. Check the opening created by doors and hinges, rear cutouts, supported load and the route for removing the console. Write these figures on a worksheet before shopping.

For a product search, the phrase “open-shelf TV stand for gaming console” describes the relevant category. On any live listing, verify the exact clear shelf dimensions, load rating, cable openings, ventilation and return policy rather than trusting a generic “fits up to” TV claim.

Choose a bench width and height from the installed TV
Make the base wider than the screen
IKEA’s buying guidance recommends a TV bench wider than the TV screen. Ethan Allen likewise advises making the base cabinet a few inches wider than the TV’s actual width, with additional width if you want décor or other items on top. Treat those statements as design and stability guidance, not as a universal dimension. Measure your television and select a bench that leaves visible room on both sides without forcing the feet close to an edge.
A wider base also gives you flexibility if you replace the TV, add a soundbar or change from a tabletop stand to a wall mount. Confirm that the top is rated for the television’s weight and that the feet sit entirely on the supported surface.
Set height from your normal seat
From the sofa or chair where you actually play, measure seated eye height. IKEA advises placing the center of the TV at eye level when seated to help avoid neck strain. Use the center of the screen—not its lower edge—as the reference, and account for the height of the TV’s feet, the bench top and any soundbar that may sit in front of the display.

IKEA’s 2026 product range lists TV-bench widths from 35 to 94.5 inches and heights from 15 to 25 inches. Those are the dimensions of that retailer’s range, not requirements for every room or television. A low bench can be appropriate when the screen is wall-mounted; a taller unit may be necessary when the display sits on its supplied stand. Recheck the sightline from the deepest and most commonly used seat.

Check viewing angle and glare
Ethan Allen recommends a location that is easy to see from where people sit, minimizes glare from windows and overhead lights, and is convenient to electrical outlets. Walk through the room at seated eye level during both daytime and evening lighting. If a window reflects directly in the panel, changing the wall or rotating the seating can improve the picture more than buying a brighter display.
Pick the furniture format that matches your equipment and room
Open-shelf TV stand
Open shelving is the easiest format to inspect and service. It suits a console that needs generous airflow, visible status lights, frequent disc or accessory changes, and quick access to the power button and ports. It also makes cable routing straightforward because the rear and sides remain visible.
- Advantages: unobstructed vents, simple dusting and easy equipment changes.
- Trade-offs: consoles, power supplies and cables remain visible, so you must plan cable routing and clean dust regularly.
- Best fit: a compact wall where one or two shelves hold the console, soundbar and a few accessories.
Ventilated media cabinet
A cabinet conceals electronics and provides storage, but the doors and back must be designed for heat and access. Ethan Allen describes a media cabinet as a ventilated home for a television, gaming consoles and related equipment while keeping cords and connections organized. Apply that as a selection criterion, then check the specific TV and console manuals for their placement requirements.

- Confirm that doors do not cover side vents or press against front intakes.
- Check that the console can slide out far enough to reach ports and remove the power plug without bending cables.
- Do not assume a small cable hole provides adequate airflow; cable access and heat removal are separate requirements.
Mixed open and closed storage
This arrangement puts heat-producing electronics on open shelves while reserving drawers or doors for game cases, spare cords, remotes, headsets and cleaning supplies. It is often the most practical compromise when you want a tidy appearance without trapping the console. Keep frequently used controllers and charging docks where you can reach them without opening a door during play.

Modular entertainment center
Choose a modular center when the wall is broad and the household needs towers, shelves or several storage zones. Measure the full wall before buying, including the height of tall sections and the swing of doors. Compare open shelves, glass doors and wood doors against the equipment’s ventilation and access needs. A modular system can expand later, but only if the initial layout leaves cable paths, outlet access and safe load margins.
Wall-mounted TV with a low storage bench
When floor space is limited, mount the TV and use a low bench for consoles and accessories. This frees the top of the bench from the TV’s feet and can keep the display at a comfortable height, but it introduces wall-load, bracket and cable-routing requirements. Leave enough space behind the display for connectors and ensure the bench still provides open or vented storage for the console.
Design airflow around the console, not just around the cabinet
Cooling problems usually come from an installation that fits on paper but blocks the heat path. Compare every vent with the shelf’s side panels, dividers, door edges and backboard. Leave the clearances required by the console and TV manuals, and keep power supplies from being buried under other equipment.
Use this ventilation check
- Place the console in its approved orientation with its feet or stand installed.
- Identify every intake and exhaust opening and compare each one with nearby panels or doors.
- Trace where warm air can leave the compartment. An open front is not enough if the rear is sealed and hot air has nowhere to go.
- Verify that the door can remain open or that its perforations provide the airflow specified by the equipment manufacturer.
- Run all required cables, then confirm that connectors do not push the console against a wall or divider.
- Plan a removable path for cleaning and service; a cabinet that requires unplugging several devices for every inspection is a poor fit.
Watch for practical warning signs after installation: unusually hot surfaces, repeated thermal warnings, unexpected shutdowns or fans that remain loud at idle. If any appear, power down safely, open the compartment and compare the installation with the console manual. Relocate the unit to an open shelf or improve the airflow path rather than relying on a decorative cable hole.

Route cables so connections stay reachable
Treat cable management as part of the furniture’s fit. Rear holes or a continuous gap let HDMI, power, network and audio cables reach outlets without crossing the front of a shelf. Before securing the furniture, decide which connections may need to be changed and keep those plugs accessible.
- Group cables by destination, but avoid tight bundles around hot power supplies.
- Leave a gentle bend at every connector and enough slack to pull the console forward for maintenance.
- Use the cabinet’s rear opening or a cable sleeve/raceway only after confirming that the route does not pinch a lead against a sharp edge.
- Keep low-voltage signal cables separated from a crowded power strip where practical, and label both ends when several devices use similar plugs.
- Place a charging dock where controllers can be lifted out without dragging the console’s cables.
A cabinet can have excellent cable holes and still fail if the power brick cannot pass through the opening or a plug cannot be removed. Measure the largest connector and brick, not just the thin cable.

Use the shortest furniture footprint that satisfies the inventory
For a compact wall, start with a simple console rather than a full entertainment center. Keep the bench wider than the TV but avoid unused towers that consume walkway space. Put only heat-producing or frequently accessed equipment on the open shelf and store cases and spare accessories elsewhere.
Prioritize the seating sightline
Place the screen where the main sofa or chair faces it directly. If seating is angled, check the viewing angle from the seat used most often rather than optimizing for an empty wall. A narrow room may benefit from wall mounting with a low bench, provided the mount, wall structure and cable path are suitable.

Protect circulation and outlets
Mark the furniture outline with painter’s tape before delivery. Sit in the normal gaming position, walk past the proposed unit and open every cabinet door. This reveals collisions that a floor plan misses. Keep an accessible outlet for the TV and console; avoid placing the only power point behind a deep, immovable cabinet.
Plan for future equipment
Leave one reachable shelf position for a replacement console, router or external drive. Extra empty volume is useful only when it does not compromise ventilation or stability. If the room may be rearranged, choose a unit that can be moved without disconnecting every cable.

Score each candidate on clear width, height, depth, cable-bend space, airflow, access, viewing comfort, storage, room scale and stability. Eliminate any option that fails a safety or ventilation requirement even if it wins on appearance.

Ethan Allen calls tip-over protection important even for a small media console. Wall-mount the TV when possible, and secure the console to the wall with a tip restraint following local safety guidance and the furniture manufacturer’s instructions. Check the wall type, anchor rating and the console’s supported load before loading shelves.
