Choose iPhone storage by checking how much space your current phone uses and what you keep on it—not by relying on a universal “average user” rule. As a starting point, 256GB may suit lighter, mostly-streaming use; consider 512GB if your local photos, videos, downloads or apps are growing; and choose 1TB when your measured use and expected workload call for substantially more room on the phone.
Check your current iPhone before choosing
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Note how much space is used, how close the phone is to full, and which apps or content categories account for the most.
- Think about whether those categories are stable or growing, and whether you expect to keep more media or larger files on your next phone.
Apple’s storage screen shows app usage and may offer recommendations for freeing space. Photos, music, apps and other content all draw on the iPhone’s built-in storage. Apple’s iPhone storage guide and iCloud Photos guidance explain these storage and management options.

Which capacity should you choose?
| Capacity | Consider it if… | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | Your current storage use is relatively low, you stream more than you download, and you are willing to manage apps and media. | Less built-in room for a growing local library or offline content. |
| 512GB | You keep a growing photo or video library on the phone, save substantial offline media, use large apps, or want more time between storage cleanups. | Whether the extra room is worthwhile depends on your actual use and the price difference for the exact model. |
| 1TB | Your measured use and likely workload justify substantial local headroom—for example, extensive media kept on the iPhone or frequent creation of large video files. | It may be unnecessary if your content is mostly streamed or stored elsewhere; check the model’s price and available configurations before deciding. |
These are practical decision factors, not Apple-published thresholds. No universal capacity rule or official recommended tier for the average iPhone owner is established by the cited sources. File sizes and individual habits vary, so a capacity does not translate into a fixed number of photos, video hours or apps.
Device storage is not iCloud storage
Device storage is the built-in capacity of the iPhone. iCloud storage is a separate service for cloud data and syncing across devices; buying more iCloud storage does not increase the phone’s built-in capacity. Apple explains the difference.
#1 Best Overall
- 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display featuring Always-On & ProMotion.
With iCloud Photos and Optimise iPhone Storage enabled, full-resolution photos and videos can be kept in iCloud while space-saving copies remain on the iPhone. This can reduce local photo-library use, but it requires enough iCloud space and does not remove local storage needs for apps, downloads or other content. Apple’s iCloud Photos instructions describe the feature.
If you are close to full, you can review Apple’s storage recommendations, optimise the photo library, transfer media you do not need on the phone, or delete content you no longer want. These options may reduce the need for local space, but they involve choices about convenience and cloud storage rather than changing the iPhone’s capacity.

Check storage options for the exact iPhone model
Not every iPhone model is offered in every capacity. For example, Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro specifications list 256GB, 512GB and 1TB, while the standard iPhone 17 specifications list 256GB and 512GB. Verify the technical specifications for the model you intend to buy.

Advertised capacity is not all available for your files
Apple states that “1GB = 1 billion bytes, and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.” The operating system and formatting use some space, so usable space for personal content is below the advertised figure. Apple’s capacity guidance explains the measurement.
