The best printer ink for a heat transfer depends on your printer and the material you want to decorate. For polyester or polymer-coated items in Sawgrass’s SG500/SG1000 workflow, Sawgrass identifies SubliJet UHD. Cotton and dark garments need a different route, such as a compatible printable heat-transfer vinyl system; conventional sublimation is not a universal solution for every fabric.
Start with the printer and the material
Choose the transfer method before choosing ink. Sublimation ink, transfer paper, printer, and blank form a system: changing one part can make the result unsuitable or unsupported. Manufacturer compatibility guidance can identify intended workflows, but it does not prove that one ink produces better results than another under controlled conditions.

For Sawgrass printers, the manufacturer lists SubliJet UHD for the SG500 and SG1000 and describes those printers as designed for Sawgrass inks. Do not assume that this ink is compatible with an ordinary inkjet printer. Check the printer’s ink and media requirements before buying.

Match the ink system to the transfer target

Why paper and printable vinyl matter
Ink alone does not determine the transfer. Sawgrass describes sublimation paper as specially coated, and its guidance for EasySubli concerns printable HTV rather than standard sublimation paper. Use media specified for the printer, ink, and blank; substituting paper or vinyl can change transfer behavior and may leave the workflow unsupported.

Do not mix ink families casually
Sawgrass advises using the same ink type throughout a printer’s life. Its VersiFlex FAQ also says Sawgrass printers are designed to work exclusively with Sawgrass inks and warns that using non-Sawgrass inks could affect warranty coverage. Treat those statements as manufacturer guidance for its equipment, and check the applicable warranty terms before changing inks.
How to choose without overpaying for a vague “best”
- Identify the printer. Confirm its exact model and supported ink system in the manufacturer’s current documentation.
- Identify the blank. Note fiber content and color for apparel, or whether a hard good has a polymer coating.
- Choose the corresponding transfer route. Use sublimation for compatible polyester or coated items; for cotton or dark garments, select an expressly compatible HTV or other system rather than assuming standard sublimation will work.
- Match the transfer medium. Verify the paper or printable vinyl is specified for that ink and printer.
- Follow the documented process and settings. The evidence available here does not establish a universal best ink or independently tested quality winner, so avoid treating marketing descriptions such as “vibrant” or “photo-quality” as comparative measurements.
What “excellent quality” can—and cannot—mean here
A compatible workflow is the defensible starting point for good output: printer, ink, transfer medium, blank, and settings need to fit together. Sawgrass and Epson provide manufacturer compatibility guidance, but that guidance is not a head-to-head independent test across the systems above. A fair quality ranking would require the same printer conditions, media, substrate, and settings; no such comparative result is established here.
