To use Bitwarden, create an account, install its browser extension or mobile app, add or import your logins, and use the saved entries to fill them in when you sign in. Start with manual autofill, generate a unique password for each account, and enable two-step login. Choose your server region and make a plan for your master password before storing anything: Bitwarden says it cannot retrieve or reset a forgotten one.
Create your account and choose a server
- Go to Bitwarden’s account sign-up and enter your email address.
- Choose the server region where you want your account: the US server at bitwarden.com or the EU server at bitwarden.eu. The account guide describes these as separate server locations, so choose carefully.
- Verify your email, then create a strong master password that you can remember. Bitwarden says master passwords created after release 2023.3.0 must be at least 12 characters. It cannot retrieve or reset a forgotten master password, so consider how you will keep it accessible before relying on the vault.
Bitwarden describes its architecture as encrypting and/or hashing vault data on your local device before anything is sent to cloud servers. That does not remove the need to protect the devices you use to access the vault or to plan for account recovery.

Install Bitwarden and prepare your browser
- Install the Bitwarden browser extension for your browser and sign in. Pin the extension if your browser provides that option so it is easy to open.
- Disable the browser’s built-in password manager to avoid competing save and autofill prompts. Bitwarden recommends this when setting up the extension.
- Install the Bitwarden mobile app on any phone or tablet where you want access to your vault, and sign in with the same account.
Add or import your logins
Save a new login
In Bitwarden, create a Login item and enter the username, password, and website URI (the site address). The URI is important: Bitwarden uses it to determine whether a saved login matches the page you are visiting. If the site has multiple relevant addresses, review the item’s URI and match-detection rule if Bitwarden does not suggest it.

If your passwords are stored in another password manager or a browser, use Bitwarden’s import workflow to bring them into the vault. Review the imported items afterward, especially their website URIs, since correct matches are needed for autofill.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Generate unique passwords
Use Bitwarden’s password generator when creating or editing an item, or open the generator tool in the app. Generate a distinct password for each account rather than reusing one. Bitwarden’s username generator also supports formats such as random words and email aliases.
Use autofill in a browser
For a first setup, manual autofill gives you control over which saved entry is used. When the login’s URI matches the current site, open the extension and select the matching item. Depending on your browser and settings, you may also be able to use an inline suggestion, context menu, or keyboard shortcut.

- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
Autofill on page load is disabled by default. Bitwarden warns that automatic filling can be misused by untrusted or compromised sites, so enable it only if you understand the added risk. If a login is not offered, check that the item has the right URI and match-detection rule before troubleshooting the extension itself.
Set up autofill on your phone
Android
Enable Bitwarden as the device’s autofill service in Android settings, then choose whether to use inline or popup suggestions where available. Bitwarden’s guide specifies Android 8 or later for its popup method; options and steps can vary by Android version, browser, and device manufacturer.

iPhone and iPad
Enable keyboard autofill for Bitwarden in iOS settings, or use Bitwarden’s browser-extension method where supported. The precise setup differs from Android, so follow the current instructions for your device and browser.
Bitwarden’s mobile autofill guides state that custom fields and split login workflows are not currently supported by mobile autofill. For those cases, you may need to copy information from the vault or complete the login another way.

Protect your account and prepare for recovery
Turn on two-step login
Two-step login requires an additional authentication method beyond your master password. Bitwarden lists authenticator apps and FIDO2 WebAuthn credentials among the free individual-account methods; email is also listed as a free method. A hardware security key is optional, not required. Availability and plan terms can change, so check Bitwarden’s current guide before choosing a method.

A hardware key can be a phishing-resistant option when used with FIDO2 WebAuthn, but it is only useful if you can reliably access it and have considered what happens if it is misplaced.
Make a master-password plan
Because Bitwarden cannot reset a forgotten master password, choose a memorable, strong password and decide how to keep it available securely. Consider whether emergency access is appropriate for your circumstances, and understand how you would regain access if you lose a second factor. Two-step login improves account protection, but it does not replace this recovery planning.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Bitwarden and the browser both offer to save a password: turn off the browser’s password manager so it does not compete with the extension.
- A saved login does not appear: check the website URI in the item and its match-detection rule. A mismatch can prevent a suggestion even when the credentials are saved.
- Autofill behaves differently on mobile: verify that Bitwarden is enabled as the device autofill service (Android) or keyboard autofill provider (iOS), and check the current platform-specific guide. Mobile autofill has limitations for custom fields and split logins.
- You cannot remember the master password: Bitwarden says it cannot retrieve or reset it. This is why a secure, deliberate recovery plan matters before you depend on the vault.
