Firefox for iOS now offers an optional ad blocker built into the browser, while Safari users can add ad-blocking through extensions installed from the App Store. That makes Firefox’s approach simpler to discover, but it does not make its blocker universal: Mozilla describes it as experimental, off by default, and in a progressive rollout.
What Firefox’s built-in blocker does
Mozilla says Firefox for iOS uses EasyList and Apple’s WebKit Content Blocker framework to block many third-party advertising networks, ad-related trackers, many third-party ads, pop-ups, and overlays. The feature is optional and disabled by default. As of Mozilla’s August 16, 2026 support update, it was experimental and rolling out progressively, so it may not appear for every user. Mozilla also says users must enable remote improvements for the blocker to receive them. Mozilla’s Firefox for iOS ad-blocking guide explains the feature and its limits.

How to turn it on or off
In Firefox for iOS, open Settings and look for the ad-blocking control. You can also manage it from the Site menu. If the setting is missing, the feature may not yet have reached your account through the progressive rollout.

Why some ads may remain
Mozilla does not promise an ad-free web. Its support page says the blocker does not block ads on search engine results pages or sponsored content on Firefox Home and New Tab. Other ads may also get through. Blocking depends on the feature’s rules and the way a site serves or labels content.
How Safari handles ad blocking on iPhone
Safari supports extensions on iPhone, including extensions that can block content. Apple’s iOS 26 guide describes finding extensions in the App Store, enabling or disabling them, and controlling which websites an extension can access. In practical terms, Safari’s route is to install and manage an extension; Firefox puts a specific ad-blocking control inside the browser. Apple’s Safari extensions guide gives the setup details.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
That distinction is about convenience and product design, not proof that Safari has no ad blocking or privacy protection. The sources do not establish a controlled head-to-head test, so they do not support a claim that one browser blocks more ads overall.
Ad blocking is not the same as tracking protection
Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection is a separate feature from its ad blocker. Mozilla says it uses a list provided by Disconnect and offers Standard and Strict modes, along with controls for individual sites. Mozilla also says Enhanced Tracking Protection does not change Apple’s device-level Intelligent Tracking Prevention. See Mozilla’s Enhanced Tracking Protection guide for how those controls work.

Safari has privacy measures of its own. Apple says iOS 26 extended Advanced Fingerprinting Protection—previously limited to Private Browsing—to all Safari browsing. Fingerprinting protection aims to limit techniques that identify a device from its characteristics; it is not the same thing as blocking ads. Apple’s iOS 26 feature document describes the change.
Why Mozilla says iPhone needs a built-in option
Mozilla’s September 1, 2026 policy article argues that Apple’s app distribution and browser policies prevent Mozilla from bringing its full add-on experience to iPhone users. Mozilla presents the built-in blocker as a specific workaround, not a replacement for a broad extension ecosystem. Policy director Sema Karaman wrote, “But building one feature directly into a browser is not a replacement for a healthy, independent add-on ecosystem.” That is Mozilla’s position; it is not a neutral or final legal finding. Mozilla’s policy article lays out its case.

A 2024 UK Competition and Markets Authority working paper records both browser-vendor submissions and Apple’s stated security and privacy concerns about extension models. It reports those positions rather than resolving the engineering debate. The CMA working paper provides that policy context.

- Choose Firefox’s built-in option if you want a browser-level ad-blocking control without first finding and installing an extension, and the feature is available to you.
- Use Safari with an extension if you prefer Safari and are comfortable choosing, enabling, and managing an extension from the App Store.
- Keep the categories separate: ad blocking, tracker blocking, and fingerprinting protection address related but different things. One does not imply that the others are active.
Mozilla has also said that “Almost 40%” of Firefox users take advantage of add-ons, specifying desktop and Android users in its September 2026 policy article. That figure is not an iOS statistic and says nothing about Safari use.
