The smoothest settings on the ROG Xbox Ally X come from choosing a realistic frame-rate target, matching the power mode to your power source, and lowering internal render resolution before destroying image quality with a blanket Low preset. Start with a stable 30 FPS in demanding games or a capped 60 FPS when the hardware can sustain it. Then tune resolution, one upscaler, and the most expensive effects on a game-by-game basis.

The Ally X has a 1080p screen, but its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and AMD Radeon graphics cannot deliver a universal 1080p/high experience in every new release. ASUS tests using default in-game settings recorded 36 FPS in Doom: The Dark Ages, 56 FPS in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and 33 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 in Performance mode. Those are published results under ASUS test conditions, not promises for every patch, driver, temperature, or scene.

What the ROG Xbox Ally X can realistically render

The ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA) combines an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, AMD Radeon graphics, 24 GB of memory, a 1080p display, and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD. ASUS says the storage can be expanded with an off-the-shelf compatible drive; adding storage does not increase graphics performance.

A 1080p panel shows the sharpest image when a game is rendered at 1920 by 1080, but native resolution is only one part of the workload. Ray-traced lighting, global illumination, volumetric effects, shadows, crowd simulation, and long view distances can consume far more GPU time than texture quality. A demanding title may therefore feel better at a lower internal resolution with a good upscaler than at native resolution with every quality slider set to Low.

Use published frame-rate numbers as context rather than a guarantee. ASUS’s 1080p comparison used default in-game graphics settings and measured 36 FPS in Doom: The Dark Ages, 56 FPS in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and 33 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 while the device was in Performance mode. Different patches, areas, drivers, temperatures, background tasks, and screen settings can materially change the result.

Set a frame-rate target before changing visual options

Decide what smooth means for the particular game. A locked frame rate with even frame times is usually more comfortable than a higher average that constantly rises and falls.

When 30 FPS is the right target

Choose 30 FPS for graphically heavy role-playing games, open-world games, and titles that cannot hold 40 or 60 FPS. A stable 30 FPS gives the game a 33.3-millisecond frame-time budget. If the scene regularly dips below that, lower the render resolution or the most expensive effects until the cap is dependable. A fluctuating 40–60 FPS can feel less consistent than a properly paced 30 FPS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to cap at 60 FPS

If repeatable gameplay stays above 60 FPS, cap at 60 rather than chasing short-lived peaks. The cap reduces unnecessary power use and prevents the frame-time swings that occur when the GPU alternates between being fully loaded and waiting for the next frame. Use the game’s limiter when it behaves correctly; otherwise use the Xbox profile or another limiter available on the device.

How to test the target

  1. Load the same save or benchmark scene each time, preferably an area with combat, weather, or many characters.
  2. Play or run the scene for several minutes instead of judging the first menu screen.
  3. Watch the one-percent-low behavior or frame-time graph if the game exposes it. An average of 50 FPS does not describe a game that repeatedly stutters to 20.
  4. Set the cap a few frames below the rate the system can hold in the heaviest repeatable section.

Match power mode to how you are playing

Power mode changes the performance ceiling, fan behavior, heat, and battery drain. Use Turbo when plugged in and maximum performance is the priority. On battery, Performance mode or a Default Game Profile usually offers a better balance, although the best choice depends on the title and your frame-rate target.

ASUS’s comparison methodology used Turbo at 35 W on AC power and Performance at 17 W on battery. Those wattages explain why identical graphics settings can produce different frame rates in handheld and plugged-in play; they are test conditions, not universal limits for every firmware version.

Turbo mode on AC power

Select Turbo when the Ally X is connected to a suitable charger and you want the highest sustained performance available from the tested power profiles. It is most useful for a 60 FPS target, high-refresh gameplay, or a demanding game that narrowly misses its cap in Performance mode. Expect more fan noise, heat, and energy use. If the game already holds its target in a lower mode, Turbo may add little visible benefit.

Performance mode on battery

Performance mode is the practical starting point for mobile play. It limits power compared with the AC Turbo test condition, so use a 30 or 40 FPS cap when a game cannot maintain 60. A lower cap often improves battery endurance and frame-time consistency because the system is not repeatedly hitting a thermal or power ceiling.

Default Game Profiles

Xbox Default Game Profiles can set a game’s TDP and FPS limits automatically. Microsoft describes them as a way to make games run better on battery by balancing performance and battery life beyond what in-game settings alone can do. Create a profile after you have found a stable target, then let the profile apply that limit whenever the game launches. Profiles are especially useful when one title needs 30 FPS at a lower TDP while another benefits from a higher limit.

Use resolution and upscaling in the right order

Keep the display output at 1080p unless you have a specific docked-screen reason to change it. The important setting is the game’s internal render resolution or resolution scale. Lowering that internal resolution reduces the number of pixels the GPU must shade; an upscaler then reconstructs a 1080p image for the panel.

Start at native 1080p when the target is easy

For an older or well-optimized game that already meets its cap, use 1920 by 1080 with the upscaler disabled or set to a quality mode. This preserves fine geometry and text. Do not lower resolution simply because the device is portable; change it only when the measured frame rate or frame times require the headroom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lower internal resolution before dropping every quality slider

For a demanding game, try a 70–90 percent render scale or the game’s Quality or Balanced upscaling preset before moving all options to Low. The exact percentage labels differ by engine. This approach usually preserves texture detail and material quality while reducing the pixel-heavy part of the workload. If shimmering, ringing, or soft foliage appears, raise the scale one step or choose a higher-quality upscaler preset.

Do not stack multiple super-resolution systems

Use one reconstruction path at a time. Microsoft lists AMD FSR Upscaling, Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), Auto SR, FSR Frame Generation, and AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) as available technologies on the platform. Enabling an in-game upscaler and a driver-level spatial upscaler together can produce a second reconstruction pass, softer detail, and unpredictable performance.

Microsoft’s guidance is to enable super resolution for games running below 60 FPS. If a game remains below 60 FPS after super resolution is enabled, Microsoft recommends Auto SR plus AFMF, with other super-resolution and frame-generation options disabled. Treat this as a starting rule: support, image quality, latency, and driver compatibility vary by game.

Lower the settings that cost the most GPU time

Change one group at a time and retest the same scene. A preset named High can hide one unusually expensive option, while a Low preset may reduce many settings that have little performance impact on the Ally X.

Ray tracing and global illumination

Disable ray tracing first in a demanding title unless reflections or lighting are central to your experience. If a game separates ray-traced reflections, shadows, and global illumination, test each option independently. Global illumination and reflections can be particularly costly in interiors with many dynamic lights.

Shadows

Move shadow quality from Ultra to High or Medium before reducing textures. Lower shadow-map resolution and cascade distance can recover GPU time with a smaller visual penalty than lowering the entire image. Contact-shadow options often add subtle grounding at a measurable cost, so disable them if a small performance gain is needed.

Volumetrics and atmospheric effects

Fog, clouds, smoke, god rays, and volumetric lighting can cause sudden frame-time spikes in weather or combat scenes. Reduce volumetric quality one step and test the worst scene, not an empty corridor. Screen-space reflections can be reduced or disabled when water and wet surfaces are not important to you.

Crowd density, foliage, and view distance

Open-world games may spend CPU time on crowds, traffic, physics, and object streaming. Lower crowd density or simulation distance when frame times remain high even after GPU settings are reduced. View distance and foliage distance affect both CPU and GPU work; reduce them gradually because overly short distances create visible pop-in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Textures and texture filtering

Keep texture quality as high as memory allows. The Ally X has 24 GB of memory, but usable graphics memory varies by system allocation and game. Texture quality mainly affects memory capacity and streaming rather than raw shader throughput. If you see texture pop-in, hitching during traversal, or an out-of-memory warning, lower textures one step and restart the game. Anisotropic filtering is usually inexpensive; keep it high unless a specific title shows a measurable cost.

Starter profiles for common situations

Situation Power mode Frame-rate target Resolution and upscaling First settings to reduce
Heavy game on battery Performance or a Default Game Profile Stable 30 FPS 1080p output; lower internal scale with one Quality or Balanced upscaler if needed Ray tracing, volumetrics, shadows, then crowd distance
Well-optimized game on battery Performance 40 or 60 FPS, capped below sustained peaks Native 1080p or the game’s quality upscaling mode Shadows and view distance only if the cap is missed
Demanding game while plugged in Turbo 30, 40, or 60 FPS based on repeatable testing 1080p output; use a single upscaler rather than lowering every option Ray tracing, global illumination, volumetrics, and crowd simulation
Large docked display Turbo when maximum quality is required Match the display’s refresh target Use Auto SR where supported, otherwise the game’s upscaler Ultra effects that cause frame-time spikes

These are starting profiles, not fixed presets. Record the target, internal resolution, upscaler mode, power mode, and cap for each game so a driver update or patch can be evaluated against the same baseline.

Understand each frame-generation and upscaling option

AMD FSR Upscaling

FSR Upscaling runs inside a supported game and reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. Choose the highest quality mode that still meets your target. Quality modes preserve more detail; Performance modes deliver more GPU headroom but can make thin geometry and text look unstable. FSR cannot fix a CPU-bound game, so reducing resolution may have little effect if the processor is the limiting component.

Radeon Super Resolution

RSR is a driver-level spatial upscaler intended for games that do not offer their own reconstruction option. Use it when the game is set below the display resolution and no in-game upscaler is active. Do not combine RSR with FSR Upscaling or Auto SR; select the path that gives the cleanest image and the most stable frame times in that title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Auto SR

Auto SR is designed to upscale lower-resolution frames to improve sharpness and smoothness on a larger screen. Microsoft says it is available in preview to Xbox Insiders on the ROG Xbox Ally X for docked play. It can be checked and controlled in the Xbox Game Bar Display Widget, and the device plus Microsoft Store components must be up to date.

AFMF and FSR Frame Generation

Frame generation creates additional displayed frames between rendered frames. It can make motion appear smoother, but it does not make the underlying game simulation respond faster. Use it only when the base frame rate is already reasonably stable. At a low base rate, generated frames can magnify judder, ghosting, or input latency. Test camera pans, fast aiming, and menus; turn the feature off if artifacts or delayed controls are more distracting than the smoother animation.

Docked play and the Auto SR preview

Docking changes the output resolution, viewing distance, and sometimes the refresh rate, so a handheld profile is not automatically suitable for a television or monitor. Confirm the external display’s native resolution and refresh rate, then retest the same game with the dock connected.

In Microsoft’s Forza Horizon 5 example, Auto SR delivered 60 FPS at 1080p with High settings on the internal screen. The same Microsoft article describes a docked Ultra-settings example with a 30 percent FPS improvement over native 1440p at similar visual quality. Both figures are examples under Microsoft’s stated conditions, not a promise for every game or display.

Build a repeatable per-game tuning routine

  1. Launch the game on AC power in Performance mode first, set the output to 1080p, and disable frame generation. This creates a useful baseline without immediately masking a low native frame rate.
  2. Choose 30 or 60 FPS, or another realistic cap, based on the heaviest scene you can reproduce.
  3. Run the game’s benchmark or a repeatable gameplay route for several minutes and note average frame rate, dips, and visible stutter.
  4. If the target is missed, enable one in-game upscaler at its Quality setting. Retest before changing other options.
  5. If the target is still missed, lower ray tracing, global illumination, volumetrics, shadows, and crowd or view distance in that order. Keep textures higher until memory or streaming symptoms appear.
  6. Switch to Turbo while plugged in if the game needs additional sustained power. On battery, test Performance mode and set a profile with the cap that remains stable.
  7. Only after the base frame rate is acceptable should you test AFMF or FSR Frame Generation. Check latency and artifacts during fast movement.
  8. Save the working values in the game’s profile and in a Default Game Profile when available.

Diagnose common problems

The FPS counter is high but movement feels uneven

Check frame times rather than the average. Remove an aggressive uncapped setting, apply a realistic cap, and retest with the same power mode. A cap that the GPU can hold consistently is preferable to a fluctuating peak.

Lowering resolution barely changes performance

The game may be CPU-bound by simulation, crowds, traffic, or streaming. Restore a reasonable resolution and reduce CPU-heavy options such as crowd density, physics detail, view distance, or background frame-rate limits. A higher Turbo limit may help on AC power, but it cannot eliminate a game-engine bottleneck.

The image is soft or shimmering

Raise the upscaler from Performance to Balanced or Quality, increase internal resolution, or disable a second driver-level upscaler. Inspect foliage, wires, fences, and HUD text while panning the camera; those details reveal reconstruction problems sooner than static scenery.

Frame generation feels delayed

Turn off AFMF or FSR Frame Generation and compare the native rendered frame rate at the same cap. Frame generation adds displayed frames but not equivalent input samples. It is least convincing when the base rate is low or unstable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game stutters after changing textures

Reduce texture quality one step, restart the game, and allow shader compilation or asset streaming to finish. Keep the same save and route for comparison. If stutter appears only during traversal, the issue may be streaming or storage pressure rather than shader quality.

Battery life is much shorter than expected

Verify that Turbo is not active on battery, lower the FPS cap, and use a Default Game Profile. Screen brightness, refresh rate, background downloads, game patches, ambient temperature, and battery health all affect runtime. ASUS’s 35 W AC and 17 W battery comparison conditions should not be interpreted as a promised battery duration.

Keep settings specific to the game and display

There is no single best Ally X preset. A competitive game may reward a locked 60 FPS and low latency, while a cinematic single-player game may look better at a stable 30 FPS with higher textures and effects. Battery state, driver version, game patch, thermal conditions, and whether the device is handheld or docked can all change the result.

When comparing two profiles, record five things: the target FPS and frame-time stability; internal resolution and upscaler quality; power draw or TDP and expected battery trade-off; the visual cost of shadows, ray tracing, and volumetrics; and whether frame generation introduces latency or artifacts. This record makes it clear whether a change improved the experience or merely raised an average counter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical verdict

For most demanding games, begin with Performance mode, a firm 30 FPS cap, 1080p output, and a quality-oriented upscaler at a reduced internal resolution. Move to Turbo when plugged in if the game can use the extra power to hold 40 or 60 FPS. Lower ray tracing, global illumination, volumetrics, shadows, and crowd distance before sacrificing texture quality. Use only one super-resolution path, and treat AFMF or frame generation as an optional final step after the native frame rate is stable. Save the result per game because the Ally X’s best settings depend on the title, patch, power source, and display.
