To shrink a GIF without spoiling it, reduce unnecessary pixels and frames before reducing colors. GIF’s LZW compression preserves the indexed pixel data it receives, but converting a full-color image into GIF’s palette of 256 colors or fewer can lose color detail. Compare a few exports at their actual display size, checking both visual quality and playback.
Understand what GIF compression changes
GIF optimization involves two different processes. First, an image is mapped to a palette of no more than 256 colors. That conversion can discard color information from a full-color source. Then LZW encodes the palette indices; that encoding is lossless for the indexed data it receives. So “lossless compression” does not mean a GIF export will look identical to its full-color source. The Library of Congress GIF format description documents its palette-based color, and MDN’s image-format guide notes the potential for unsatisfactory dithering when converting full-color imagery.

There is no universally best palette count or dithering setting. The right choice depends on the source image, encoder, and destination. A flat illustration and a photographic animation can respond very differently to the same settings.

#1 Best Overall
- This app creates animated gif files from your pictures on your device.
- No Wi-Fi needed
- No ads
- No in-app purchases
- No subscription you own the software
- Crop unused margins. Empty space still occupies pixels in the frame.
- Set dimensions to the intended display size. Oversized frames contain pixels viewers will not see at their normal viewing size.
- Trim dead time. Remove frames or duration that do not contribute to the message.
- Use changed-frame or region encoding when available. GIF can represent changed portions of frames, though the size benefit depends on the content and encoder.
Keep the original or an editable master. Re-export from that source if you need to try different settings; repeatedly editing an already palette-reduced GIF can compound quality loss.
Choose palette and dithering for the artwork
Logos, diagrams, and flat-color graphics
Test a smaller palette if the artwork uses a limited set of solid colors. Inspect thin lines, small text, edges, and brand colors: a reduced palette may simplify the file, but it can also merge colors or make details disappear. Use the result, not the palette number, to decide whether the reduction is acceptable.

Gradients, photographs, and footage
Compare a larger palette with a reduced one. Look closely at faces, text, and smooth surfaces for banding, false colors, and noisy texture. Fewer colors are not automatically better: they may reduce data, but can flatten gradients and erase distinctions.

Dithering on versus off
Without dithering, a gradient may break into visible bands. Dithering approximates intermediate tones with patterns of available colors, which can make transitions look smoother but add grain or texture. Its effect on file size varies with the image and encoder, so compare actual exports rather than assuming it will make a file smaller or larger. Judge the pattern at the intended display size and against the background where the GIF will appear.

GIF transparency is indexed, not a full alpha channel. If edges look jagged or halos appear against the destination background, inspect transparency there rather than only against the editor’s preview. The W3C PNG specification describes PNG’s lossless bitmap storage and transparency.
Check playback settings separately
Palette and dithering affect color appearance; timing and compositing affect how the animation plays. GIF89a defines frame delay units in hundredths of a second and includes disposal methods that govern what happens to a frame before the next one. Actual playback interpretation can vary among tools and platforms. After optimizing, check that the motion feels right, transparent areas behave as intended, and previous frames do not leave unwanted trails or backgrounds. See the GIF89a specification for the format details.

Compare exports on the destination
Save a few candidate encodes and compare the same moments in each. Use the intended display size and, where relevant, the destination background. Check:

- Artifacts: banding, dither grain, halos, or details that disappear.

- Compatibility: whether the intended site or app accepts the format.
No universal palette count, dithering mode, frame rate, or file-size threshold can be recommended for every GIF. Choose the smallest export that remains clear and plays correctly where it will be used.
Consider another format when GIF is optional
If the destination requires GIF, keep it. Otherwise, compare a suitable alternative using the same asset at the same display size. PNG is an option for a lossless still; MDN identifies APNG as an option for lossless animation. Google’s WebP documentation describes animated WebP as supporting lossy and lossless compression and transparency, and says it can yield smaller files than GIF and APNG. That is not a guarantee for every animation: actual size and quality depend on the content, encoding, and platform support.
