To share files safely in Windows 11, make the network Private only if you trust its devices and users, enable discovery and file sharing for Private networks, then grant access to one intended folder for a named account. Keep password-protected sharing and Microsoft Defender Firewall enabled. This creates access on your local network—not a way to share the folder over the public internet.
What a Windows network share does—and where it works
A network share makes a folder available to other computers on the same local network (LAN), such as your home Wi-Fi. Microsoft directs users to OneDrive for sharing over the internet; a LAN share is not an internet link.

Use a share when another trusted computer needs ongoing access to a particular folder. For a one-time transfer or a recipient outside your home, the alternatives differ in how long access lasts and who can receive the files.

Before you turn sharing on
- Connect both computers to the same home network.
- Use a Private network profile only if you trust the people and devices on that network. Windows 11 sets a newly connected network to Public by default; Microsoft explains the profile distinction in its network settings guidance.
- Choose a folder specifically for sharing. Anyone who can access the share can access its contents, subject to the permissions you grant.
- Use an account on the sharing PC with a password. Keep password-protected sharing on rather than removing an access barrier as a routine setup step.
Set up a share in Windows 11
1. Set the connected network to Private
- Open Settings > Network & internet.
- Select the connected Wi-Fi network or Ethernet connection.
- Check Network profile type. Select Private only if this is a trusted home network. Leave it Public on networks you do not trust.
A Private profile permits the PC to be discoverable and used for file and printer sharing. It is not a reason to mark a public hotspot or other untrusted network Private.

2. Enable discovery and file sharing for Private networks
- In Settings, open Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings (the page may be labeled Manage advanced sharing settings).
- Under Private networks, turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing.
Network discovery helps the PC see other devices that share files. Keep these options off for Public networks.
3. Give a specific account access to one folder
- In File Explorer, right-click the folder you intend to share.
- Select Show more options > Give access to > Specific people.
- Choose the network user authorized to use the share and confirm. If the account is not listed, follow Windows’ account-selection prompts rather than switching to anonymous access.
Microsoft also offers Everyone as a sharing choice, but it gives access to all users on the network. A specific account is the narrower choice. Microsoft’s network file-sharing instructions describe the sharing choices and connection process.

4. Open the share from the other computer
On the receiving PC, open File Explorer and enter the share’s network path in the address bar. If you will use it regularly, map it through This PC > More > Map network drive, enter the path, choose a drive letter, and optionally select Reconnect at sign-in. If Windows asks for credentials, use the account authorized on the computer hosting the share.
Check from the second PC that it can reach the intended folder and no other folder you did not choose to share.

Remove access when you are done
- On the sharing PC, right-click the folder in File Explorer.
- Select Show more options > Give access to > Remove access.
- If you no longer need network discovery or file sharing on that PC, return to Advanced sharing settings and turn them off under Private networks.
To inspect shares on the sharing PC, enter \localhost in File Explorer. Microsoft notes that seeing your own user profile there does not mean every file in it is shared with other network users. See Microsoft’s sharing troubleshooting and removal guidance.

- Confirm the connection: both PCs should be on the same network. Install current Windows updates on each computer.
- Check the sharing PC’s profile: it should be Private only on a trusted network. Make sure Network discovery and File and printer sharing are enabled under Private networks.
- Check the folder and account: confirm you shared the intended folder with the account being used and that the account has the necessary access. When prompted, enter credentials for an authorized account on the host PC.
- If discovery still fails, check relevant services: Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance lists Function Discovery Provider Host, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host. Starting them and setting them to Automatic is a troubleshooting measure—not a change every working PC needs.
Keep Microsoft Defender Firewall enabled. Microsoft describes Windows Firewall as filtering network traffic and helping block unauthorized access; its firewall guidance explains its role. Diagnose the network profile, sharing settings, credentials, permissions, and services instead of disabling firewall protection.

That weakens the access barrier, so it is not a safety recommendation. Consider it only if a specific compatibility problem leaves no suitable alternative, and only on a trusted network; do not use it to make an untrusted network or broad access safer.

Choose the right option for the recipient

For Nearby sharing, Microsoft says current Windows 11 can use Wi-Fi when the receiving Windows 10 or 11 PC is on the same Private Wi-Fi network; otherwise Bluetooth may be used.
