Anthropic documents four pre-built document skill types—PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and PDF—but it does not publish a definitive ranking of the 14 recommendations below. The remaining entries are practical workflow ideas, not claims that Anthropic maintains 10 more official skills.
What Claude skills do—and what they do not do
Anthropic describes skills as modular capabilities that give Claude domain-specific instructions and reusable workflows. A skill can include a SKILL.md file, examples, reference material, and scripts. Claude can load relevant skill material when it applies, so you do not have to repeat the same procedure in every conversation. See Anthropic’s skills documentation and its skills repository.

A skill is a set of procedures and resources, not a guarantee that Claude has learned your habits or retained earlier work. It does not replace the context, source files, or integrations a task requires. Think of it as reusable guidance for how to do a task, rather than a memory of everything you have done.

14 Claude skills and workflows worth considering
The first four entries are the pre-built document skill types identified in Anthropic’s documentation. The rest are either documented examples or workflow categories you can build and adapt; they are not presented as a ranked or verified set of official offerings.

1. PowerPoint presentation creation and editing
Best for: turning an outline, brief, or existing deck into a structured presentation. The deliverable might be a new slide deck, edits to an existing presentation, or an analysis of presentation content.
Status and setup: PowerPoint is one of Anthropic’s documented pre-built document skill types. Anthropic lists it on Claude.ai and the API, but not in Claude Code. Provide the brief, audience, source material, and any design constraints. Review slide accuracy, layout, and speaker notes before presenting.
2. Excel spreadsheet analysis and reporting
Best for: examining tabular data and producing a spreadsheet, chart, or written report. Specify what each column means, the question you want answered, and any rules for excluding or grouping records.

Status and setup: Excel is a documented pre-built document skill type available on Claude.ai and the API, not Claude Code. Verify calculations, formulas, and chart labels against the source data; a polished summary is not proof that the underlying analysis is correct.
3. Word document drafting and formatting
Best for: creating, revising, or formatting a document such as a report, proposal, or policy. Supply the source facts, intended reader, required structure, and formatting expectations.
Status and setup: Word is a documented pre-built document skill type on Claude.ai and the API, not Claude Code. Check important wording, figures, citations, and formatting in the finished document.

4. PDF creation and document work
Best for: producing a formatted PDF or following a PDF-focused document workflow. The task should specify whether Claude is creating a report, working from supplied PDF material, or preparing a final file.
Status and setup: PDF is a documented pre-built document skill type on Claude.ai and the API, not Claude Code. Check page breaks, tables, links, and any extracted text in the resulting file.
5. Claude API reference and SDK assistance
Best for: developers looking up API references, SDK guidance, and implementation practices. Anthropic describes an open-source Claude API skill covering eight programming languages in its skills repository.
Status and setup: This is a named Anthropic repository skill bundled with Claude Code. Use it as an aid to find and apply relevant guidance, then verify code against the documentation for the API and SDK version you are using. Do not treat generated code as a substitute for testing.
6. Frontend and web development workflow
Best for: turning a feature brief into implementation steps, code changes, or a review checklist for a web interface. Useful inputs include the repository context, framework, design requirements, and acceptance criteria.

7. Web app testing workflow
Best for: converting requirements into test cases, or guiding a repeatable manual or automated test process. Define the user journeys, supported browsers or environments, and what counts as a pass.
Status and setup: Treat this as a practical development workflow category, not a blanket claim about a specific official test skill. If you choose a repository example, inspect its current instructions and confirm that they match your test framework and application. Review failures and edge cases instead of relying only on a generated checklist.
8. MCP server building workflow
Best for: organizing the steps involved in building a server that connects Claude-compatible tools or data sources. Provide the intended capabilities, interface requirements, and any security constraints.
Status and setup: This is a technical workflow category. Check the current repository instructions before using a named example, and validate permissions, input handling, and behavior in your own development environment.
9. Brand guidelines and voice consistency
Best for: applying shared terminology, tone, and formatting rules across recurring communications or content. Supply the current guidelines, approved terminology, audience, and examples of work that meets the standard.
Status and setup: Treat this as a custom or example-based workflow, not a verified pre-built document skill. Assign a human reviewer to catch outdated guidance, exceptions, and claims that need approval.

Status and setup: This is a workflow idea grounded in the kinds of uses represented in Anthropic’s example collection. Keep sensitive information and approval requirements in mind, and have the responsible person verify facts and distribution before sending.
11. Design critique and creative ideation
Best for: generating alternatives or applying a critique checklist to a supplied design. State the intended audience, purpose, constraints, and the kind of feedback you need—such as hierarchy, readability, or consistency.
Status and setup: Anthropic’s examples include creative and design uses, but design critique is not one of the four documented pre-built document skill types. Use the result to inform a human design review, not to certify that a design is usable or accessible.
12. Visual asset or canvas creation
Best for: guiding a workflow that creates a designed artifact. Before adopting one, spell out the actual output you expect, such as a particular file type or editable canvas; “make a visual” alone does not define what the workflow can produce.

13. Data-to-document research workflow
Best for: turning supplied data and source material into a report or other document. A workflow might guide Claude to inspect the inputs, note evidence and gaps, analyze relevant data, and draft a document with findings tied to sources.
Status and setup: Anthropic describes skills as composable and adaptable to different surfaces; this particular combination is an editorial workflow idea, not a named pre-built skill. Provide the source files and rules for citing or handling uncertain information, then verify both the analysis and its supporting sources.
14. Custom skill for a repeated personal or team process
Best for: encoding a process you perform often, including its steps, context, templates, and reference materials. Start with a narrow, observable task and define what a good result should contain.
Status and setup: Anthropic’s repository includes a skill-creator capability and a template for building skills. A basic skill uses a SKILL.md file with YAML frontmatter for its name and description, followed by instructions and optional examples. Treat your first version as something to review and maintain as the process changes.
Where skills are available and how setup differs
Availability depends on the Claude surface, plan, account eligibility, and organization settings. Anthropic documents the PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and PDF skills on Claude.ai and the API, and says those pre-built document skills are not available in Claude Code. Custom skills have different setup routes; do not assume a skill added in one place automatically appears everywhere.
- Claude.ai: Anthropic’s documentation says custom skills are uploaded as ZIP files and require an eligible plan with code execution enabled. Organization policies can also affect access.
- Claude Code: Custom skills use the filesystem. Anthropic’s repository describes installing document-skills or example-skills plugins in Claude Code; the API skill is bundled with Claude Code.
- Claude API: This is a programmatic route for applications and production pipelines, not the same setup as uploading a skill in Claude.ai. Anthropic says API skills require the Code Execution Tool beta.
Anthropic’s Help Center also describes account-based Claude Code sync for eligible signed-in users, with its own conditions, including a minimum Claude Code version. As surfaces and account policies can change, check the current Help Center guidance and product documentation for your account before setup.
Check a skill before giving it access
A skill may include executable code, instructions, dependencies, or references to external services. Anthropic warns about prompt injection and data exfiltration, and advises users to enable skills only from trusted sources. As the Help Center puts it: “Only install skills only from trusted sources.” Read the security guidance before enabling a skill, particularly when Claude can work with sensitive files or tools.
- Check who created the skill and whether you trust the source.
- Inspect its instructions and bundled files, including scripts, dependencies, and resources.
- Look for instructions that send information to outside services or ask for access the workflow does not need.
- Review and update custom skills when the underlying process, tools, or policy changes.
Choose a skill by the work you repeat
Start with the task you do repeatedly and the deliverable you want—not a list’s ranking. Use one of the four document types when your work centers on a presentation, spreadsheet, Word document, or PDF. For software development, communications, design, research, or a team-specific process, decide whether an example fits or whether a carefully scoped custom workflow is more appropriate. In every case, confirm the surface supports your setup, provide the necessary context, and review the result before relying on it.
