There is no universal best zoom ratio or shutter setting: the lenses and controls depend on your phone, while the right exposure depends on whether the subject is still, moving, or in low light.
Choose the zoom setting that suits your phone
Use a built-in telephoto lens or optical zoom step when your phone offers one and it frames the subject at the distance you need. Zoom controls vary by model: Apple lists quick zoom steps by iPhone model, while Google describes automatic lens selection while zooming on supported Pixel phones.

Treat the number on the zoom control as a framing guide, not proof that a dedicated optical lens is active at every setting. Phones may switch camera modules or combine multiple frames as you zoom. Samsung, for example, says its Enhanced zoom can switch between lenses and combine frames; its availability and behavior are device-specific. See Samsung’s Enhanced zoom explanation.

- Tap the subject in the viewfinder to focus, if your camera app supports tap-to-focus.
- Hold the phone steady and take the picture in good light when possible.

If a distant subject looks blurry, check focus distance as well as zoom. A telephoto camera designed for distant subjects may not focus when the subject is too close, particularly if the phone switches to that camera at high zoom. Samsung’s US support page lists minimum focusing distances for the 5x telephoto lens of 30 cm on Galaxy S25 Ultra and 80 cm on Galaxy S26 Ultra. Those measurements apply only to the named devices, not to all phones or lenses. See Samsung’s blur troubleshooting guide.
Match exposure to subject movement and light
| Situation | Starting point | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Bright light, distant still subject | Use a native telephoto or optical zoom step if available; tap to focus. | Confirm the subject is within the selected lens’s focus range. |
| Moving subject | Use a faster shutter if manual control is available, and seek more light. | A shorter exposure lets in less light, so the image may be darker unless light or ISO compensates. |
| Still subject in low light | Try Night mode or a longer exposure, and stabilize the phone. | A longer exposure brightens a static scene but increases blur risk from camera movement. |
| Very high zoom | Use stabilization if your phone supports it and allow the frame to settle. | Stabilization features and their activation conditions vary by model. |
| No manual controls available | Stay in automatic Photo mode, use good light, hold steady, and focus carefully. | Exact settings and menus depend on the phone and camera app. |
A faster shutter reduces motion blur but admits less light; a longer shutter can brighten a still scene but makes movement blur more likely. Oklahoma State University Extension explains this tradeoff in its Smart Phone Photography fact sheet.

- Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
- Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
- Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
- Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
- Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.
Keep the phone steady at high zoom
Small hand movements are more noticeable in a tightly framed image. Brace the phone against something firm or use a phone-compatible tripod for a stationary subject, especially in low light. A tripod steadies the camera; it does not extend optical reach or freeze a moving subject. Samsung also recommends keeping the device still for Night mode and describes a model-specific Zoom Lock: on supported Galaxy devices, it can engage at 20x or higher after the user holds still for 1.5 seconds and touches the photo area. Do not assume that feature is available on every phone. Details are in Samsung’s Enhanced zoom guidance and Samsung’s camera modes guide.

When to use manual camera controls
Start with automatic Photo mode if your phone lacks manual controls or the light and subject conditions are changing quickly. If the default result is not working and your phone supports a Pro mode, adjust settings to fit the scene rather than copying a universal recipe.
- Shutter speed: Choose a faster exposure to reduce blur from a moving subject; use a longer exposure only when the subject is still and the phone can be stabilized.
- ISO: Raising ISO can help compensate for the lower light admitted by a faster shutter, but the suitable value depends on the phone and scene.
- Focus: Manual focus can help when supported, but check that the subject is within the lens’s focusing range.
- Exposure and white balance: Adjust these only if you need more control over brightness or color than automatic mode provides.
Samsung describes ISO, shutter speed, exposure, focus, and white-balance controls in Pro mode on supported devices. Google documents focus, shutter speed, and ISO Pro controls for specified Pixel Pro models. Feature availability is device-specific; see Samsung’s camera modes guide and Google Pixel Camera Help.
Quick Recap
Quick fixes for soft zoomed-in photos
- The subject is out of focus: Tap it in the viewfinder and check whether the selected telephoto lens can focus at that distance.
- The whole frame looks smeared: Steady the phone, brace it, or use a tripod for a still subject; motion during a longer exposure can blur the image.
- A moving subject is blurred: Use a faster shutter if available and add light where possible. Stabilizing the phone alone will not stop subject movement.
- The image looks poor at extreme zoom: Try a lower zoom setting, let supported stabilization settle, and take the shot in brighter light. Lens switching and computational processing vary by phone.
