There is no single best Blender export format for every handoff. Start with the receiving application’s documented import support, then choose a format and settings that preserve the geometry, materials, animation, and scene structure your recipient actually needs. Export a small test and inspect it in the destination application before sending the full project.
Which Blender export format should you use?
Blender supports several exchange formats, including glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf), Alembic (.abc), Universal Scene Description (.usd), Wavefront OBJ (.obj), Stanford PLY, STL, and FBX. Native COLLADA (.dae) support is documented through Blender 4.5 LTS, so treat it as version-bounded rather than assuming it is supported in every later release. See Blender’s Pipeline & I/O overview.

Use the receiver’s requirements as the deciding factor. A format that is available in Blender is not necessarily supported by the destination, and support for a format does not guarantee that every feature in your scene will transfer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- For an animated character or a complex exchange scene: FBX is widely used for this kind of transfer. Check the receiver’s requirements for rigs, animation, axes, and scale before exporting.
- For a web-oriented asset or a glTF workflow: Blender’s glTF exporter exposes controls for images and texture handling, texture coordinates, normals, materials, vertex colors, object selection, Y-up export, geometry modifiers, and animation. Confirm which of those features the receiving application imports.
- For a mesh handoff or fabrication workflow: Consider formats such as STL or PLY only after confirming that the destination supports them and that they carry the data your workflow needs.
- For a scene-based pipeline: Check whether the destination expects Alembic or USD and which scene data it can use.
These are starting points, not a universal ranking. Blender’s format list and exporter controls describe what Blender can write; the receiving application determines what is useful on the other end.

What needs to survive the transfer?
Before choosing settings, agree with the recipient on the parts of the asset they need. The more specific the handoff contract, the easier it is to spot a mismatch in a test export.
- Geometry: Identify the objects to include and whether the recipient needs modifiers baked into the exported mesh.
- Materials and textures: Confirm the supported material features and how image files should be packaged or referenced. A material appearing in Blender does not guarantee it will render the same way elsewhere.
- Animation and rigs: Specify whether the receiver needs animation, a rig, shape keys, or a particular animation range, and verify the destination’s support for them.
- Scene organization: Agree on which objects, names, and hierarchy the receiving pipeline expects.
- Orientation and scale: Set the required forward and up axes, scale, and units for the destination rather than assuming its conventions match Blender’s.
How to export from Blender to FBX
Use the FBX export controls to match the receiving application’s specifications; there is no safe universal axis or scale recipe. Blender’s FBX documentation describes its axis mapping, scale, and Apply Transform options, as well as the exporter’s compatibility limits. Consult the Blender 5.0 FBX manual alongside the destination’s current import requirements.

- Confirm the receiver’s FBX requirements. Ask for the expected forward/up axes, scale or unit convention, object scope, and animation needs.
- Prepare the scene. Decide which objects to export and whether modifiers or animation should be included. Avoid sending extra scene content the recipient does not need.
- Set the export options. In Blender’s FBX export options, match Forward and Up to the destination’s documented convention. Set scale and Apply Transform only according to that application’s requirements.
- Export a representative sample. Include a small example of the geometry, material, or animation features used in the full deliverable.
- Import and inspect the sample in the destination application. Check orientation, dimensions, object selection, materials, and animation there—not just in Blender.
- Correct the settings and repeat if needed, then export the full deliverable. Keep the verified settings consistent for the final handoff.
Why is the exported model rotated or the wrong size?
Orientation and scale mismatches usually point to differences between Blender’s conventions and those expected by the receiving application. Blender’s FBX manual says Blender uses Y Forward and Z Up and documents Forward/Up mapping, scale, and Apply Transform controls. The correct values depend on the destination, so check its current import guidance rather than copying settings from an unrelated application.
- Check whether the destination expects a different forward or up axis.
- Confirm the scale and unit conventions on both sides.
- Check whether transforms should be applied or handled during import.
- Re-export a small test and verify its orientation and dimensions in the target application.
Why are materials, textures, or animation missing?
First check whether the chosen format and exporter support the feature, then verify that the relevant objects and options were included. Texture files may also need to be packaged or made accessible in a way the receiver expects.

Blender’s FBX manual specifically lists material textures and vertex shape keys among features missing from its exporter. It also notes that NURBS surfaces, text, and metaballs are converted to meshes at export. Do not assume an FBX export will preserve those Blender features in their original form.
For glTF, the Blender 5.0 export operator provides controls for materials, image format and texture handling, animation, and other data. Those controls do not establish that a particular receiver supports every feature. Check the destination’s import documentation and validate the result there. The version-specific options are listed in the Blender 5.0 Export Scene Operators API.

What changed in Blender 5.0 I/O?
Blender 5.0 release notes identify several version-specific I/O changes: the C++ FBX importer became the default, the OBJ importer gained material name collision handling, and OBJ import gained an Apply Transform option. These are importer changes, not guarantees about the behavior of another application or every Blender version. See the Blender 5.0 Pipeline & I/O release notes if your instructions refer to those options.
