Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallSet up a VPS by choosing a provider, location, operating system, and plan; provisioning it with an SSH key; connecting and updating the system; configuring a non-root administrator and firewall; pointing a domain if needed; and enabling backups and monitoring. The exact controls vary by provider. The steps below use DigitalOcean Droplets as a concrete example and Ubuntu Server for Linux administration guidance.
1. Choose a provider, location, operating system, and plan
A VPS is a virtual machine you provision through a hosting provider. DigitalOcean calls its Linux-based virtual machines Droplets; other providers may use different names and control panels. For a website, application, or learning project, decide what software you will run, which operating system it supports, and where your users are located before selecting a plan.

On DigitalOcean, plan size determines RAM, disk space, vCPUs, and price. Its creation guide recommends choosing a datacenter near you and your audience to help reduce latency. There is no universal plan size: resource needs depend on the application, its dependencies, and expected traffic. Check the provider’s current choices rather than copying a preset without understanding it. DigitalOcean’s Droplet creation guide

During creation, select an operating-system image and add an SSH public key if the provider supports it. SSH keys come in a pair: the public key can be placed on the server, while the private key stays with you. Do not share the private key. Ubuntu recommends Ed25519 when generating a key; follow the instructions for your operating system and SSH client in the Ubuntu OpenSSH server documentation.

DigitalOcean recommends SSH-key authentication over password access for its Droplets. Its setup flow is provider-specific, so use your provider’s instructions to add the key to the account or server. Keep a secure copy of the private key and know how to access it before you rely on it for administration. DigitalOcean’s production-ready Droplet setup guide
3. Connect and update the operating system
After the VPS is created, find its public IP address in the provider control panel. DigitalOcean displays a new Droplet’s IP there. From a terminal with an SSH client, connect using the account and key specified by the provider. For example, the general form is ssh username@server-ip; replace both values with the ones for your server. Initial usernames and login procedures differ by image and provider.

Once connected, confirm that you are on the expected distribution, then install available operating-system updates using that distribution’s documented package-management process. Ubuntu recommends periodic software updates and notes that many security updates can be applied automatically with unattended-upgrades. Follow the current instructions for your Ubuntu release rather than assuming package commands or prompts are identical across distributions. Ubuntu security suggestions

Use a non-root account for routine work
Use a regular user account for day-to-day administration and grant it sudo privileges for tasks that require elevated access. Ubuntu recommends least privilege, non-root accounts, and sudo for administrative work. DigitalOcean’s Droplet setup guide likewise recommends a sudo non-root user and disabling password-based root access for its Ubuntu Droplet setup. The exact account-creation steps depend on the operating system and provider image. Ubuntu security suggestions

Allow only the services you need
Configure a firewall so inbound traffic is limited to services required for your use case. A web server commonly needs web traffic, while remote administration needs SSH; do not expose extra ports just in case. Provider-level firewall rules and a firewall configured on the operating system can both be relevant, so check how they interact before changing access rules. DigitalOcean states in its production setup documentation that “DigitalOcean Cloud Firewalls are a free, stateful firewall service for Droplets.” That statement applies to DigitalOcean’s service, not firewall offerings generally. Protect your SSH access before editing its settings
A faulty SSH configuration can prevent new connections or stop the SSH service from starting. Keep your current session open while making changes, ensure you have a recovery path through the provider, and validate a proposed configuration before restarting or reloading SSH with sudo sshd -t. Ubuntu documents this check and the risks of an invalid SSH configuration in its OpenSSH server guidance.

5. Point a domain to the VPS if it will serve a website or application
A DNS A record maps a hostname to an IPv4 address. In the DNS control panel that currently manages your domain, add or update the record for the hostname you want to use, entering the VPS IP as its value. Use the DNS provider’s instructions, since record names and control panels vary. If your VPS has an IPv6 address and you want to use it, DNS uses a different record type; check the provider’s documentation for the correct configuration.

You do not always need to change nameservers. That depends on where your DNS is currently managed and whether you intend to move DNS hosting. For example, Cloudflare’s full DNS setup imports records and changes nameservers so Cloudflare becomes authoritative. If you only want to edit a record while keeping your existing DNS provider, make that change there instead. Cloudflare’s DNS getting-started guide and Ubuntu’s DNS documentation

After saving the record, check that it resolves to the intended address with a DNS lookup tool such as dig. DNS changes can take time to appear everywhere, so a result that has not updated immediately does not necessarily mean the record is wrong.
6. Enable backups and monitoring, then verify the setup
Choose recovery options deliberately
Review the provider’s backup and snapshot options before relying on them. Check how often backups run, how long they are retained, what they cost, and how restoration works. DigitalOcean distinguishes automated backups from on-demand snapshots and says enabling automated backups adds cost. Its documented options describe a four-hour backup window, weekly backups retained for four weeks, and daily backups retained for seven days; these are DigitalOcean-specific details that may change. Consult the current Droplet creation documentation for the options available to your account.
A backup is useful only if you can recover the data you need. Learn the restore procedure and, where practical, test it using a suitable non-production system or copy. Do not assume a snapshot and an automated backup have the same schedule, retention, or recovery behavior.

Check monitoring and access
Use provider monitoring or another suitable monitoring method to watch the server’s health and availability. Before treating the VPS as ready, verify that SSH access works, the intended user can administer the system, and only required services are reachable. If you configured a domain, check that it resolves to the intended address. Confirm that the selected backup and monitoring features are active in the provider’s controls.
Quick Recap
- Provider console: the VPS is running and you can locate its IP address.
- Access: your SSH key works, and routine administration uses a non-root account with sudo.
- Security: updates are applied and firewall rules expose only the services your workload needs.
- DNS: the hostname resolves to the intended server address, if you configured a domain.
- Recovery and operations: you understand backup cost, retention, and restoration, and monitoring is enabled.
