Short answer: choose the desktop that fits your applications, hardware and preferred workflow—not the one attached to the smallest-looking requirement number. Xfce offers a modular, traditional desktop with a broad set of core components. LXQt is a modular, Qt-based desktop with its own tools and project-documented Wayland compositor support. Fedora also packages Xfce, LXQt, LXDE, Cinnamon, MATE, KDE Plasma, GNOME and other desktops. Test your finalists on the actual computer, ideally from equivalent installations or live media, before committing.
What “lightweight” really means
In Linux desktop discussions, “lightweight” usually describes a project goal: limiting background work, keeping components modular, and remaining usable on modest hardware. It is not a portable benchmark result. The memory footprint and responsiveness you experience depend on the distribution release, default services, graphics drivers, panel plugins, file-indexing tools, display scaling, applications and the age or condition of the hardware.

A desktop can be designed for low overhead and still feel slow on a computer with a failing disk, unsupported graphics, too little memory for the browser tabs you need, or a driver that does not handle suspend correctly. Conversely, a desktop with more visible features may perform well after unnecessary services are disabled. Treat “lightweight” as a starting criterion, then verify the complete system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is also a difference between an installer minimum and a comfortable daily setup. A distribution may boot with a small amount of memory, while a modern browser, office suite, video call and cloud client need far more. Storage figures include the operating system, updates, caches and your files, not just the desktop packages. For an older machine, disk health and memory errors can dominate the result more than the choice between two similarly designed environments.

Xfce and LXQt: what each project actually provides
Xfce: a traditional, modular desktop
The Xfce Development Team describes Xfce as “a lightweight desktop environment for UNIX-like operating systems” that aims to be fast and low on system resources while remaining visually appealing and user friendly. Its design is modular rather than a single inseparable program.
The Xfce project identifies these core parts:
- Window manager: controls borders, placement, focus and workspaces.
- Desktop manager: handles the desktop background and icons.
- Panel: provides menus, launchers, task lists, notifications and status areas.
- Session manager: starts the desktop and restores sessions.
- Application finder: launches programs and searches commands.
- File manager: browses files and mounted devices.
- Settings manager: centralizes appearance, input, display and other configuration.
This separation lets a distribution or an experienced user replace individual pieces. It also gives Xfce a familiar panel-and-menu arrangement that resembles older Windows and classic Linux desktops. If you want many settings exposed in one place, conventional workspaces, desktop icons and a substantial basic toolkit, Xfce is the safer first trial.
Modularity is useful when troubleshooting. You can identify whether a problem belongs to the panel, window manager, display settings or a particular plugin instead of treating the entire desktop as one opaque application. The trade-off is that distributions can choose different defaults, themes and companion applications, so two Xfce installations may not look or behave identically out of the box. Check the package set and version in the edition you plan to maintain.
LXQt: a Qt-based, classic desktop
The LXQt Project calls LXQt “a lightweight Qt desktop environment” focused on “being a classic desktop with a modern look and feel.” It is also modular, with a configurable panel, panel plugins, a file manager, settings tools and companion utilities.
Qt matters when your everyday software is already Qt-based: menus, font rendering and configuration conventions can feel more coherent when the desktop and applications use the same toolkit. LXQt’s own tools cover common tasks such as file management, terminal use, archiving, screenshots, session handling and system settings. The exact set depends on the distribution package, so inspect the installed edition rather than assuming every distribution ships an identical bundle.
The LXQt project states that seven Wayland compositors are supported. That is a project-level statement, not a guarantee that your distribution ships all seven, enables one by default or provides equal hardware support for each. Check the session names, compositor packages and login-manager options in the distribution release you intend to install.
That Wayland detail should be treated as a test item, not a buying promise. Confirm that the login screen exposes the session you want, that the compositor package is maintained for your release, and that your graphics hardware handles external monitors, scaling, screen capture and suspend in that session. If a distribution offers only an X11 session or a limited compositor choice, LXQt’s project-level list does not change what is actually available to you.
How the alternatives fit
There is no universal “best lightweight desktop.” Fedora’s editions and Spins demonstrate the breadth of current choices: Xfce and LXQt are available alongside LXDE, Cinnamon, MATE, KDE Plasma, GNOME and others. Availability, maintenance and defaults vary by release.

The table describes project and distribution characteristics, not measured RAM, speed or battery life. The available evidence does not establish a controlled, same-hardware benchmark that ranks these environments.
Distribution choice can matter as much as the desktop label. A dedicated Spin may provide tested defaults, a matching installer and a coherent set of applications. Installing a second desktop onto an existing system can leave duplicate launchers, overlapping settings tools and extra services. That approach is convenient for experiments, but a clean image is easier to compare and easier to remove later.
Choose by experience before choosing by specification
1. Define the job the computer must do
Write down the tasks that matter rather than starting with a desktop name. Include the browser, office suite, development tools, media players, printers, scanners, VPN software, remote-desktop clients and accessibility tools you actually use. A desktop that idles efficiently but breaks one essential application is not a practical choice.
- Traditional layout: prioritize a panel, menu, task list and workspace model you already understand.
- Qt consistency: consider LXQt when your preferred applications are Qt-based and you want matching settings and dialogs.
- Configuration: favor Xfce if you want its broad, separable set of desktop and settings components.
- Wayland exploration: consider LXQt only after confirming the compositor and session available in your distribution.
- Older graphics: test the actual GPU, display outputs, scaling and suspend behavior; “lightweight” does not replace a working driver.
Accessibility deserves a place in this first inventory. Test text size, contrast, keyboard navigation, screen magnification, pointer settings and the assistive software you rely on. A familiar arrangement that can be adjusted consistently may be more valuable than a small difference in idle memory.
2. Pick the distribution and release
Desktop environments arrive as distribution editions, Spins or installable packages. Fedora explicitly offers Xfce and LXQt Spins, but the same desktop can have different defaults, patches, services and application sets elsewhere. Decide on a supported distribution release first, then evaluate the desktop as delivered there.
Check the release’s maintenance dates, installer options, login-session names and package availability. If you install a desktop after the distribution’s main setup, you may receive extra services or duplicate applications. A dedicated Spin or edition can be cleaner for a first comparison.
Also confirm whether the image is maintained for your processor architecture and firmware mode. The name of a desktop in a repository does not guarantee that the distribution provides the same login session, compositor, themes or utilities as its dedicated image. Keep a note of the release, desktop version and package state so a later update can be compared fairly.

Interpreting the published requirement figures
The Xfce 4.20 documentation reproduces requirements for representative distributions. They are distribution installation requirements, not isolated Xfce requirements and not a head-to-head performance test.
| Distribution example | CPU | Memory | Storage | Context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xubuntu | 1.0 GHz or higher, with PAE | 512 MiB or more for Desktop/LiveCD | 7.5 GB | Figure reproduced on the Xfce 4.20 requirements page; original requirement date is not specified. |
| MX Linux | Not stated in the cited figure | 2 GB or more | At least 10 GB free | Distribution requirement reproduced on the same Xfce page; not an Xfce-only minimum. |
| Manjaro | 1 GHz processor | 1 GB | 30 GB | Distribution requirement reproduced on the same Xfce page; not a controlled comparison. |
The spread illustrates why every number needs its distribution and context. It does not show that Xfce requires 512 MiB, that MX Linux is heavier, or that Xfce is lighter than LXQt. Modern browsers and productivity applications can require substantially more memory than a desktop’s installer minimum, and storage requirements include the distribution, updates and user data.
Recommended Free Tools
The Xfce page is useful for locating a starting point, not for predicting your finished system. Requirements may describe a desktop image, a live environment or a distribution’s complete support policy. They may also change between releases. Quote the distribution and the page context whenever you record a figure, and avoid turning one number into a ranking.
A reliable, repeatable comparison method
- Use one distribution release where possible. Install Xfce and LXQt from equivalent images or packages on the same machine. Changing the distribution at the same time changes far more than the desktop.
- Record the session and defaults. Note the desktop version supplied, display server, enabled services, panel plugins, startup applications and file-indexing settings.
- Start from comparable conditions. Reboot, log into an otherwise idle session, wait for update checks and background activity to settle, and use the same display resolution and power profile.
- Measure the same workload. Compare idle behavior, application launch time, browser tabs, media playback, file operations and suspend/resume. Keep the workload and measurement method identical.
- Judge reliability separately from resource use. A session that consumes slightly more memory but handles your displays, audio and peripherals without errors may be the better choice.
- Repeat after updates. Drivers, compositor versions and distribution defaults can change. Record the release date and package state for any notes you intend to rely on.
Do not rank desktops by copying unlike minimum requirements from different distributions. Those figures describe what each distribution chose to support, not how the desktop behaves under identical conditions.
For a useful written comparison, record boot time only from the same firmware and storage state, and distinguish application launch time from the time needed to restore a session. Note whether a live session, encrypted disk or power-saving profile is active. These controls prevent a fast-looking result from being caused by a different drive, resolution or set of startup programs.
Try a live USB before installing
A live session reduces commitment while you evaluate booting, graphics and basic usability. The Xfce 4.20 requirements page lists representative distributions and includes a live USB option for MX Linux. That makes a USB flash drive a practical exploratory tool, although the drive’s speed can make applications feel slower than an installed system.
You do not need a particular drive model or capacity specified by the desktop projects; you need media supported by the distribution’s image and your computer’s firmware. If you already have suitable media, there is no additional purchase. If not, a USB flash drive is an optional cost of experimenting, not a requirement for choosing Xfce or LXQt.

- Download the current image and instructions from the distribution’s official site.
- Verify the image when the distribution provides checksums or signatures.
- Create boot media using the distribution’s documented method.
- Boot the target computer, selecting the USB device in its firmware boot menu.
- Test displays, Wi-Fi, audio, suspend, applications and your normal files without altering the internal disk.
- If the machine cannot boot the media, check firmware mode, Secure Boot instructions and USB compatibility before judging the desktop.
Live media cannot perfectly predict installed performance: it may use a slower filesystem, run in a generic graphics mode and omit your final updates. Use it to detect obvious hardware or workflow problems, then perform an installed, like-for-like test when the decision matters.

Assuming the smallest number wins
Idle memory is only one observation. A panel plugin, browser, indexing service or graphics fallback can change it, while application responsiveness and driver stability may matter more. Measure equivalent sessions and workloads.
Confusing a project page with a guarantee
Xfce’s and LXQt’s descriptions state design goals. They are not independent laboratory findings. The LXQt Wayland statement identifies supported compositors at the project level; it does not promise that your distribution, compositor version or GPU will behave identically.

Testing only an empty desktop
A desktop can look fast until your normal browser profile, cloud client, development tools and external monitor are active. Recreate the workload that caused the original computer to feel slow.
Blaming the desktop for failing hardware
Check disk health, memory errors, overheating, firmware and graphics drivers. Replacing a desktop environment will not repair a failing drive or supply RAM that your applications need.
Mixing sessions without cleaning up
Installing several environments on one system can add duplicate applications, settings panels and background services. That is acceptable for a short experiment, but it can make measurements and troubleshooting confusing. A separate installation or live test gives each candidate a clearer baseline.

A practical decision guide
- Choose Xfce first when you want a conventional panel-and-menu desktop, extensive built-in settings and modular components, and your distribution provides a well-supported Xfce edition.
- Choose LXQt first when Qt-based applications, its utility set or an available Wayland compositor are central to your workflow, and you have verified the session on your hardware.
- Choose another Fedora desktop when LXDE, MATE, Cinnamon, KDE Plasma or GNOME better matches your applications, accessibility needs, support expectations or available installation media.
- Keep testing instead of guessing when your machine is unusually old, uses proprietary graphics, has limited memory, or must resume reliably every day.
The strongest decision is usually the one that leaves your essential applications working, your hardware supported and your maintenance routine comfortable. “Lightweight” narrows the field; hands-on testing chooses the winner.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Xfce faster or lighter than LXQt?
The project descriptions do not establish a universal winner. Distribution defaults, drivers, services, plugins, applications and hardware all affect memory use and responsiveness. Compare Xfce and LXQt on the same release, computer and workload.
Which desktop is best for an older computer?
Start with Xfce or LXQt, then test the actual machine. Check disk health, available memory, graphics support, suspend, display scaling and the applications you need. A failing drive or unsupported GPU can outweigh the desktop choice.
Does LXQt guarantee Wayland support?
The LXQt project says seven Wayland compositors are supported. Your distribution may package fewer, select a different default or provide different hardware support, so verify the session and compositor in the specific release.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What do the Xubuntu, MX Linux and Manjaro requirement numbers mean?
They are distribution requirements reproduced on the Xfce 4.20 documentation page: Xubuntu lists a 1.0 GHz PAE processor, 512 MiB RAM and 7.5 GB storage; MX Linux lists 2 GB RAM and 10 GB free storage; Manjaro lists a 1 GHz processor, 1 GB memory and 30 GB storage. They are not Xfce-only minimums or a performance ranking.
Can I try a desktop without installing it?
Yes. A distribution live USB can let you test booting, graphics, networking, audio and applications without changing the internal disk. USB speed and generic graphics modes can make a live session differ from an installed system, so confirm important results after installation.
Does choosing a lightweight desktop cost anything?
The desktop projects do not require a purchase. A USB flash drive may be an optional expense if you need live media, but you can use existing suitable media. Distribution support, hardware repairs or extra storage are separate costs determined by your setup.
Should I install multiple desktops on one Linux system?
It can be useful for a quick comparison, but shared installations may add duplicate applications, settings tools and services. For reliable measurements, use equivalent images or separate installations and record the exact defaults.
The Bottom Line
Xfce is the strongest first test for a traditional, highly configurable desktop; LXQt is the strongest first test for a Qt-oriented workflow or a distribution session offering the compositor you want. Fedora also makes LXDE, MATE, Cinnamon, KDE Plasma and GNOME available as alternatives. None is automatically the fastest: test the same release, hardware, peripherals and workload, and treat published requirement figures as distribution-specific guidance rather than a desktop ranking.
