Choose a store game by game: compare the same edition at your regional checkout, then check refund eligibility, availability, and the title’s launcher, account, DRM, and offline requirements. Steam, GOG, and Epic do not have one permanent winner or a store that is always cheapest.
Compare the same game on the same terms
Before buying, check these details on the store listing and at checkout. Prices, editions, promotions, and availability can vary by region and change over time.

- Edition and contents: Match the base game, deluxe edition, bundle, and included extras. A lower price may reflect a different edition.
- Regional checkout total: Compare the final price for your region, not just a price shown elsewhere or before checkout. Epic says its regional-pricing system covers more than 190 countries and over 30 territories, with suggested developer prices informed by exchange rates, local purchasing power, and industry experience. That describes its pricing system; it does not show that Epic is cheapest for a particular game. Epic’s regional-pricing explanation.
- Refund terms: Check the policy for the specific purchase type, including the purchase date, playtime or runtime, and any refund label or exclusions.
- Availability: Confirm that the exact game and edition are offered in your region. Store catalogs are not identical.
- Technical requirements: Check the game’s listing and publisher information for DRM, a separate launcher, an additional account, and offline-play conditions. The store name alone does not establish how a particular game behaves.
- Client preference: If you would rather not rely on a store client, GOG describes its client as optional. That does not guarantee that every game has the same offline behavior or requirements.
What differs between the stores
Steam
Valve’s standard refund offer for games and software applications generally applies when you request a refund within two weeks of purchase and have played for less than two hours. Valve says you can still request a refund outside those limits, but approval is not guaranteed. DLC, in-game purchases, pre-purchases, bundles, and other products may follow separate rules. Epic’s policy says eligible PC and Mac purchases marked “refundable” or “self-refundable” may be refunded within 14 days of purchase if they have less than two hours of runtime. Non-refundable products, bans, terms violations, and refund abuse are among the limits the policy identifies. Check the product’s refund label and the current policy before purchase. Epic also says a free game remains in your library after you claim it, even after the promotion ends. Free-game offers are temporary, so check what is currently available rather than treating a promotion as a lasting price advantage. Language support varies by game; consult the listing. GOG
GOG describes itself as a curated digital distribution platform with an optional client. That can suit buyers who prefer not to depend on a client, but it is not proof that every game can be played offline or has identical DRM and account requirements. A secondary comparison has described a 30-day voluntary refund window, including after downloading or playing, subject to GOG’s discretion. Because the current official policy wording is not established here, do not rely on that duration without checking GOG’s terms for your purchase. Check GOG’s withdrawal terms.
A quick buying check for a specific game
- Open the game’s listing on each store that carries it in your region.
- Compare the same edition and included content, then compare the final checkout price.
- Read the applicable refund terms. For Steam, check the purchase date and playtime; for Epic, check whether the item is refundable or self-refundable and its runtime. Review the current terms for other purchase types.
- Look at the game and publisher notes for any required launcher or account, DRM, and offline-play conditions.
- Consider client preference and any active promotion only after confirming the game’s requirements and the offer’s terms.
Which store should you choose?
Choose GOG when its optional-client approach suits you and the specific game’s verified requirements do too. Choose Steam or Epic when that store has the edition, regional checkout price, or purchase conditions that better fit your needs. For all three, make the decision from the current listing and terms for the exact game—not from a blanket claim about which storefront is best.
