Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst, open a few unrelated websites on the same device and network. If they also fail, check your connection, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, router, and internet provider. If they load but one site does not, compare that site on another device and another network before blaming its host: DNS, browser settings, security software, routing, or the site itself could be responsible.
These checks help narrow down where the problem lies; they do not, by themselves, identify the company at fault.

Start with the scope: one website or several?
Check the address for typos, then retry the page once. A mistyped domain or subdomain can produce a DNS error even when your connection is working. Google Chrome Help recommends checking whether the problem affects one website or multiple websites; if several unrelated sites fail, investigate your connection first.
- Several websites fail: Check whether your device is online, confirm Wi-Fi or Ethernet is connected, and look at your modem or router. If other devices on the same network are affected too, the network or internet provider may be involved.
- Only one website fails: Continue with the comparisons below. A single-site failure can still come from DNS, browser extensions, security software, routing, or the website’s server.
Google Chrome Help’s connection and loading-error guide covers these scope and connection checks.

Compare devices and networks
Use the same website to make each comparison. These checks offer clues, not proof: a result can point toward a layer to investigate without establishing which company is responsible.
| What to compare | What the result may suggest |
|---|---|
| Same website on another device, same network | If it works on the second device, look more closely at the original device, browser, or its security settings. |
| Same website on the original device, another trusted network | If it works there, the original network or its DNS resolver may be involved. |
| Same website across different devices and networks | If it fails across independent paths while unrelated sites work, a site-side problem becomes more likely, though this does not prove the host is down. |
For a quick alternate-network check, you can use mobile data if available. Avoid entering sensitive information on an unfamiliar public network.

Rule out browser and device causes
If the problem appears limited to one browser or device, try the site in Chrome Incognito. If it loads there, an extension or stored browsing data may be interfering. Chrome also recommends checking firewall or antivirus settings when connection errors persist.
- Open the site in an Incognito window.
- If it works, disable extensions one at a time and retry the page.
- If the problem continues, clear browsing data or review security software settings.
Change security settings cautiously; do not leave protective software disabled as a workaround.

Interpret DNS errors without assuming the host is offline
DNS translates a domain name into information needed to reach a site. A DNS error means name resolution failed somewhere along the path; it does not establish that the web server or hosting platform is down.
Possible causes include an incorrect or missing DNS record, nameservers pointing to the wrong place, a DNSSEC problem after a DNS-provider change, or a resolver retaining a cached negative answer. For a newly created record, clearing the cache on your own device will not clear a negative answer cached by an upstream resolver. Cloudflare says that negative-cache duration is based on the zone’s SOA MINIMUM value.

Use server errors as clues, not a verdict
An HTTP 5xx response generally points to server-side trouble or overload, but it does not automatically mean the hosting provider has a broader outage. A connection refusal, timeout, or missing response can also involve routing, configuration, or network filtering. Google Search Console distinguishes DNS issues, network unreachable, failed connections, no response, truncated responses, and connection refused as different URL-unreachable conditions.

One more specific example is Cloudflare Error 521. Cloudflare defines it as a case where the origin server refuses Cloudflare’s connections. The origin application may be offline, or it may be blocking or rate-limiting Cloudflare traffic. That identifies a problem between Cloudflare and the origin; it does not necessarily mean the hosting company’s entire platform is unavailable. Cloudflare’s Error 521 guidance lists checks for the site administrator or host, including confirming the origin responds, reviewing origin logs, and ensuring Cloudflare IPs are not blocked.
Check provider status and report useful evidence
If you know which hosting, DNS, or CDN provider the site uses, check its official status page for incidents or scheduled maintenance. Cloudflare, for example, provides status information and notifications. A green status page cannot rule out a problem specific to one site’s settings or origin. See Cloudflare’s status documentation.
If the site remains unavailable, record the exact error and send it to the site owner. A site owner contacting a provider should include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The exact URL and error message or code.
- The time of the failure, including timezone.
- Whether unrelated sites loaded on the same device and network.
- Whether the site failed on another device or network.
Those comparisons help distinguish a local connection issue from a site-specific failure and give the administrator or provider something concrete to investigate.
