Browser automation is the controlled workflow for web actions, not simply another name for either DOM access or screenshots.
What each approach lets an agent see and do

These categories overlap. An agent can use browser automation to read structured information and take screenshots, while a visual computer-use system can operate a browser using pixels rather than DOM structure. Choose the method based on the task, not a belief that one modality is universally better.

Which approach is more reliable for clicking the right element?
For a conventional web control, structured access usually gives the agent a more direct way to identify what it is clicking. Prefer a locator based on a user-facing role and accessible name—for example, a button with the name “Save”—rather than a coordinate inferred from a screenshot. Playwright recommends user-facing attributes and explicit contracts for resilient locators; its documented options include role, text, label, placeholder, alt text, title, and test IDs when an application provides a stable test contract. Neither a locator nor a screenshot guarantees that an action did the right thing. After an important click, verify the resulting state: check for the expected confirmation, changed value, navigation, or other task-specific outcome. If the page changes, obtain a fresh accessibility snapshot before relying on references from the old one. Playwright MCP references are unique to a snapshot and remain valid only until the page changes; a stale reference fails, and the documentation advises capturing a new snapshot. A screenshot can help confirm that a control looks right or that the page changed as intended, but pixel position alone is a weaker basis for identifying a precise target when layout or content density may shift. Playwright puts the distinction plainly: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.” The quote is from its official Screenshots documentation.
When does an agent need to see the page instead of reading its structure?
Use a screenshot when the answer depends on rendered appearance rather than only on text or element roles. Examples include checking whether a page’s layout is broken, judging spacing or alignment, inspecting image-heavy content, or examining a chart or canvas that may not expose its contents as ordinary page text. Screenshots also preserve a visual record that can help document a bug.

Structured access does not show every visual detail: a page tree can tell an agent that text or controls exist without showing how they are arranged or whether they overlap. Conversely, pixels may reveal a visual problem without identifying the semantic control responsible for it. Playwright’s guidance treats screenshots and accessibility snapshots as complementary: take both when the task needs visual context and structured information.
How to choose a workflow for the task
- For text reading or routine website actions: use browser automation with an accessibility snapshot or other DOM-backed page information. Identify controls with stable, user-facing locators, perform the action, and verify the resulting state.
- For a visual judgment: add a screenshot when you need to assess layout, appearance, a chart, canvas, or a visual defect. Keep structured access for identifying and interacting with controls when it is available.
- For a desktop app or a site without usable DOM parsing: use screenshot-driven computer use. The host performs a proposed mouse or keyboard action and returns an updated screenshot; the agent inspects that frame before choosing what to do next.
- For a task that mixes interaction and visual inspection: use structure to find and verify the target, then use a screenshot to judge appearance or rendered content. Refresh the snapshot after navigation or other page-state changes before acting on its references.
This distinction between browser automation and computer use is reflected in Microsoft Foundry’s comparison: browser automation parses HTML or XML pages into DOM documents, while computer use operates on screenshot pixels through virtual mouse and keyboard actions. Microsoft recommends computer use for desktop applications and environments without DOM parsing, and browser automation for web-only interactions; its computer-use cycle returns an updated screenshot after an action. It also advises using a sandboxed environment such as Playwright.

What to consider before implementing it
- Where the interface runs: DOM-backed browser automation is suited to web pages; screenshot-driven computer use also applies to desktop interfaces.
- What the task depends on: use structure for semantic text and controls, pixels for visual appearance, and both when the task requires each kind of evidence.
- How actions are targeted: use stable semantic locators where available. Treat coordinates as dependent on the current rendered frame, and inspect a new frame after computer-use actions.
- How state is maintained: browser automation requires a live browser session or equivalent execution environment. Snapshot references are temporary, not durable identifiers.
- What the host environment supports: available browser tools, DOM parsing, screenshot capture, and computer-use actions depend on the implementation. Vendor documentation describes capabilities, not a controlled comparison of speed, cost, or accuracy.
For example, Cloudflare describes Browser Run as beta tooling for live browser sessions controlled through CDP, with screenshots, DOM state, rendered pages, and content available after JavaScript runs. Its documentation was last updated June 24, 2026: Cloudflare Browser Run. This is one example of browser-session infrastructure, not a requirement for every agent.
For development workflows, Visual Studio Code describes an iterative browser feedback loop that can inspect page content, screenshots, console errors, and interaction results, with focused Playwright code available when a flow needs more control: Visual Studio Code agent browser tools.

Is one method always faster or more accurate?
No general ranking is established here. Official documentation explains the different evidence and interaction models, but does not provide a decision-relevant comparative benchmark showing that screenshots, DOM access, or browser automation is universally faster, cheaper, or more accurate. Results depend on the task, page, tool integration, and execution environment. Choose the path that directly supports the decision the agent must make, and add another modality when it supplies evidence the first one lacks.
