Amnesia: The Dark Descent has the lowest published PC requirements among the games compared here, but its Steam listing warns that integrated graphics and very low-budget cards might not work. Treat it as a candidate to check—not a compatibility guarantee. Compare your actual processor, graphics hardware, memory, Windows version and free storage with each game’s current listing before buying; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee smooth play or a particular frame rate.

Which horror games have the lowest listed requirements?

These official Steam listings offer useful hardware comparisons, not low-end PC benchmark results. The games also differ in format: Amnesia is first-person survival horror, Darkwood is top-down survival horror, Phasmophobia has a VR-qualified minimum, and Aliens: Dark Descent is a higher-spec reference point.

Game Minimum PC requirements shown What the listing means for a modest PC
Amnesia: The Dark Descent Windows XP/Vista/7; 2.0 GHz processor; 2 GB memory; Radeon X1000 or GeForce 6 graphics; 3 GB storage. Steam listing Lowest listed baseline in this comparison, but the store page warns that integrated graphics and very low-budget cards might not work. The legacy Windows minimum is not a promise of compatibility with every modern PC.
Darkwood Windows 10 (64-bit); Intel Core i3-2100 or AMD Phenom II X2 565; 4 GB RAM; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 (1 GB) or AMD Radeon HD 5770 (1 GB); 10 GB storage. Recommended: 8 GB RAM and GT 660/Radeon HD 7870-class graphics. Steam listing A more demanding comparison than Amnesia on paper. Do not assume it will suit a weak integrated GPU just because its presentation is top-down.
Phasmophobia Windows 10 (64-bit); Core i5-4590 or Ryzen 5 2600; 8 GB RAM; GTX 970 or Radeon R9 390; DirectX 11; 21 GB storage. Steam support listing The listing says these minimum specifications are for VR; it also says lower specifications may work for non-VR. Do not read the VR baseline as a definitive non-VR requirement or as proof that a lower-spec system will run it well.
Aliens: Dark Descent Windows 10 or 11; FX-6300 or Core i3-6100; 8 GB RAM; 3 GB VRAM; Radeon R9 380 or GeForce GTX 960; DirectX 12; 60 GB storage. Steam support listing The listing specifies a minimum target of 30 FPS at 1920×1080 on low. That is a stated target, not an independent test result, and makes this a useful higher-spec reference rather than an obvious low-end pick.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Its listed processor, memory and storage baseline is modest by the standards of these examples. However, the graphics warning matters especially for older laptops and systems that rely on integrated graphics. Steam’s current client supports Windows 10 and later, which is separate from the game listing’s legacy Windows XP/Vista/7 minimum; that distinction does not establish that the game works on every newer Windows setup. Darkwood

Darkwood’s minimum names specific older dedicated graphics cards with 1 GB of memory, alongside a 64-bit Windows 10 requirement. Compare your GPU model with the listed class rather than judging compatibility by the game’s camera angle or art style. Its recommended graphics and RAM requirements are higher than its minimums, so meeting the minimum alone does not establish how smoothly it will run.

#1 Best Overall
F.E.A.R. 3 - PC
  • Divergent Co-op: Deep, social gameplay that gives players distinctly different abilities
  • Frenetic Combat: 360 degree cover, evolutionary slow-mo modes, phasing portal systems and best in class mech combat

  • Masters of Horror: Legendary director John Carpenter and writer Steve Niles provide their expertise on cinematics and story
  • Multiplayer - A twist on classic multiplayer modes set inside the Almaverse provide an experience unique to F.E.A.R. 3

Phasmophobia

Use caution when interpreting this game’s minimum: Steam identifies it as a VR specification and says lower specifications may work for non-VR play. The listing does not provide a separate, guaranteed non-VR baseline here, so it is not a clear low-end recommendation based on requirements alone.

Aliens: Dark Descent

This listing calls for dedicated graphics with 3 GB of VRAM, DirectX 12 and 60 GB of storage. Its 30 FPS at 1920×1080 on low note is the developer’s stated minimum target, not a general result for all PCs that meet the parts list.

What to check on your PC before buying

Steam says game requirements appear on each store page. Check the current page for the specific game you intend to buy, because requirements and compatibility details may change. Steam Support: system requirements and performance

  • Windows version and architecture: Check your installed Windows edition and whether it is 64-bit if the listing requires it. A game’s stated minimum operating system and Steam client support are separate details.
  • Graphics model and memory: Identify the actual GPU and compare it with the named model or class. For systems with integrated graphics, do not assume the game will work: Amnesia’s listing explicitly warns that integrated graphics may fail, and Steam notes that integrated GPUs are generally weaker than dedicated cards.
  • Processor and available RAM: Compare the CPU and installed memory with the game’s own minimums. Close unnecessary applications if memory is tight; Steam notes that too little available memory can lead to disk swapping and reduced FPS.
  • Storage and graphics API: Confirm both free drive space and any stated DirectX version. Steam cautions that DirectX support by itself may not guarantee the required pixel-shader capability.
  • VR or non-VR mode: Check what play mode a specification assumes. Phasmophobia’s listed minimum is specifically for VR, with a separate caveat that lower specs may work in non-VR.
  • Performance expectations: Minimum requirements are not a promise of high FPS. Lowering resolution or graphics settings may help, but available options differ by game.

What to try if your PC is close to the minimum

If a game’s listing suggests your hardware may be borderline, use conservative settings first. Steam advises integrated-graphics users to try low shader detail and windowed mode; reducing resolution or other graphics settings may also help. These are troubleshooting options, not assurances that an unsupported GPU will work.

  1. Start with the game’s own graphics options. Select a lower resolution and reduce demanding settings where available; menus and choices differ across games.
  2. For integrated graphics, try low shader detail and windowed mode. Steam recommends these as possible adjustments, but Amnesia’s warning still applies: integrated graphics might not work.
  3. Reduce memory pressure. Close applications you do not need while playing if available RAM is limited; insufficient free memory can cause disk swapping and lower FPS.
  4. Recheck the listing if something does not match. Confirm the exact GPU, operating system, DirectX support and storage requirement rather than relying on a broad label such as “low-end laptop.”
