Check the exact model and regional version first, then estimate space for apps and games, photos and video, downloads, and offline media. If you are deciding between two capacities, the larger one is usually more useful when you retain lots of files locally or install large apps; a microSD card helps only on models with a card slot and does not replace internal storage for every app.
Start with the exact Galaxy model and market
Samsung does not offer the same storage configurations on every Galaxy phone or tablet, and options can differ by country. For example, Samsung UK lists the Galaxy S26 Ultra with up to 1TB and the S26+ in 256GB and 512GB configurations. Those are UK examples for those models, not a general range for every Galaxy or market. Check the product page or the specific regional SKU before buying. Samsung’s UK storage guide is a starting point, but the exact product listing should settle which configurations are available to you.

Estimate how much you keep on the device
Think about the files that need to be available without a network connection: apps and games, camera photos and videos, downloaded music or movies, and other documents. Streaming and regularly removing or transferring files can keep local use lower. Keeping a large photo library, recording high-resolution video, installing several large games, or downloading media for travel increases the case for more internal storage.
Samsung UK offers these illustrative estimates for a 128GB smartphone: approximately 900 photos, 60 minutes of UHD video, 1,000 songs, more than 100 apps and games, or 20 movies. These are manufacturer estimates, not promises that each category can be stored alongside the others or exact measurements for every phone. Actual file sizes vary. Samsung’s guide also uses an average photo size of 5MB and estimates about 200 such photos per 1GB; camera resolution and settings affect the real size. Samsung UK storage guide, accessed 2026.

Leave room for software and growth
The capacity printed on the box is not all free for your personal files. The operating system, preinstalled software, and updates use space, and your library can grow during the time you own the device. Samsung’s UK guide advises allowing about 10GB for files and software updates and adding a 20% buffer in its planning calculation. Treat those figures as Samsung’s guidance, not fixed requirements or a guarantee of usable space for every model. The practical approach is to avoid planning to fill the entire nominal capacity.
Choose a capacity that fits your habits

These are decision scenarios, not guarantees that a particular capacity will never fill. Samsung’s older general advice that 64GB is enough for casual users should not be treated as a blanket recommendation for every current buyer.

Check whether microSD expansion is actually available
Not every Galaxy phone or tablet supports microSD. Samsung’s UK compatibility guide says availability and capacity depend on the model, and its table applies to devices sold in the UK or Ireland; specifications elsewhere can differ. The table lists older S-series support through the S20 generation and says the listed S21 models have no external memory. Do not infer card support for an A, Z, S, or Tab device from the family name alone. Verify the exact model and its maximum supported card size in the relevant market. Samsung describes three card formats: microSD up to 2GB, microSDHC up to 32GB, and microSDXC above 32GB through 2TB. For high-resolution video on a compatible device, Samsung recommends microSDXC for its capacity and speed; simpler card types can suit less demanding still photography. What a card can—and cannot—do
Samsung says Galaxy Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, and many apps cannot be moved to a microSD card. A card can be useful for photos, music, video, and other files on a compatible model, but do not count it as extra internal capacity for apps. If app and game space is your main concern, choose the internal tier with that use in mind.
Galaxy tablets have their own expansion options
Samsung UK’s tablet comparison lists microSD support up to 2TB for the Galaxy Tab S11, Tab S11 Ultra, Tab S10 FE, Tab S10 FE+, and Tab A11 LTE. The same guide shows internal capacities that vary by model, from 64GB or 128GB at the entry end through 1TB for the Tab S11 Ultra. Use an external SSD for file transfer, not as built-in capacity
A portable SSD can be useful for storing or transferring large files, such as video you offload from a device. It remains external file storage: it does not increase the Galaxy’s built-in capacity or work as a substitute for selecting a larger internal tier. Confirm that the exact device and your intended transfer workflow support the connection you plan to use. Samsung’s UK storage guide also points to portable SSDs as an option for large files.
