The biggest confirmed difference is how and where you can play: Switch 2 supports handheld play and Nintendo confirms local multiplayer, while Capcom lists a 30 fps target for every Switch 2 mode. PS5 and Xbox Series X list 30, 40 and 60 fps modes. The Switch 2 edition is scheduled for December 4, 2026, so its real-world performance and image quality cannot yet be compared with the released console versions.

These figures are published targets and output resolutions, not hands-on test results. Capcom says rendering resolution can vary with system load, upscaling is used when it falls below output resolution, and frame rate can drop in high-load situations. The chart does not establish native rendering resolution, equivalent graphics settings, or which version looks sharper. Capcom’s official Monster Hunter Wilds site

What the frame-rate modes mean
Switch 2: a 30 fps target, with TV and handheld options
Capcom lists a 30 fps target for the Switch 2 modes. In TV mode, players can choose between prioritizing resolution and frame rate; handheld mode is also listed. Those mode names do not imply a higher frame-rate target in one option: the published target remains 30 fps. Because the game has not launched on Switch 2, the target cannot tell you how consistently it will hold in demanding scenes.
PS5 and Xbox Series X: three listed targets
Capcom lists Prioritize Resolution, Balanced and Prioritize Frame Rate modes for PS5 and Xbox Series X, with targets of 30, 40 and 60 fps. For PS5, Capcom USA community manager Joseph Bustos described the 40 fps Balanced mode as suitable for a display capable of 120 Hz. This detail is specifically documented for PS5; the cited material does not establish the same display guidance for Xbox. PS5 mode information
#1 Best Overall
- Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
- A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
- New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
- Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
- Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.
Why the resolution numbers do not settle image quality
The listed Switch 2 outputs are 2240×1260 in TV resolution mode, 1920×1080 in TV frame-rate mode and 1536×864 in handheld mode. The PS5 and Xbox charts list 3840×2160 output across their modes. These are output figures, not proof that each version renders internally at that resolution. Capcom’s notes say rendering resolution can change with system load and may be upscaled to the listed output.
Consequently, comparing those numbers alone cannot establish relative sharpness, detail, or visual quality. Nor do the targets establish frame-rate stability: Capcom warns that frame rate may drop in high-load situations. A fair comparison of actual image quality and performance will require post-release testing under comparable conditions.
Portability, local play and cross-play
Switch 2 adds handheld play and confirmed local multiplayer
Switch 2 is the only one of these three versions with a handheld mode. Nintendo also confirms local multiplayer, but the cited announcement does not specify the player count, whether play is wireless or on one console, or any restrictions. Treat “local multiplayer” as confirmed support, not as a particular setup or group size. Nintendo’s Switch 2 announcement
Cross-play is not the same as cross-progression
Capcom describes Monster Hunter Wilds as cross-play enabled, allowing players on different platforms to play together. That statement does not confirm shared saves, hunter progression or purchases across Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox. If you plan to change platforms, do not assume your character or progress will transfer unless Capcom confirms cross-progression separately. Capcom’s platform information

Release dates, editions and regional bundles
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions launched on February 28, 2025; the Switch 2 edition is scheduled for December 4, 2026. Capcom lists the game for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC, and says the paid expansion Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is planned for Switch 2 in 2027. That confirms a planned expansion version, not detailed patch or content parity between platforms. Capcom’s release and platform information

Which version fits your priorities?
- Choose Switch 2 if portability or local multiplayer is the deciding factor. Those are the distinctive confirmed play options, but the game is not scheduled to launch there until December 4, 2026.
- Choose PS5 or Xbox Series X if you want the listed 40 or 60 fps modes now. Their published mode targets include those options, although the figures alone do not guarantee a steady frame rate in every situation.
- Wait for Switch 2 performance evidence if visual quality is decisive. The platform chart supplies targets, not a verified comparison of image quality, stability or graphics settings.
- Check progression details before switching platforms. Cross-play is confirmed, but shared saves and purchases are not established by the cited sources.
What remains unconfirmed before the Switch 2 launch
Because the Switch 2 version is unreleased, there is no basis here to state how it performs in practice or how its image quality compares with PS5 and Xbox Series X. Final regional edition details, local multiplayer specifics, cross-progression, and any later target or patch changes are also not established. Check current official platform information closer to purchase, particularly if you are choosing based on a specific multiplayer setup, save transfer or regional bundle.
