Choose a Galaxy S phone for a familiar, conventional smartphone design and Samsung’s traditional camera-focused flagship options. Choose a Galaxy Z Fold if you will use its larger inner screen for reading, multitasking or media; choose a Z Flip if you want a phone that folds into a compact clamshell. The right choice depends on the exact model and market—not just the S or Z label.
What is the difference between Galaxy S and Galaxy Z?
Galaxy S phones use the conventional flat-slab smartphone design. Galaxy Z phones fold: the Z Fold opens to a larger, tablet-like inner display, while the Z Flip closes into a smaller clamshell. That changes how each phone handles in a pocket, in one hand and when you want more screen space.

Specifications below are for particular models and markets, not every phone in either family. Samsung UK’s comparison, updated 25 August 2026, lists these display sizes and weights:

These are Samsung UK specifications for the named models; dimensions and configurations may differ by country. The unfolded Fold display gives you more room for multiple apps or immersive content, but that advantage matters only if you use the larger canvas regularly. A Flip’s appeal is different: it folds down for compact carry and offers quick interactions on its cover screen.
Is Galaxy S or Galaxy Z better for multitasking?
Choose a Fold for a larger working area
Consider a Z Fold if you often read, watch video or work with more than one app on screen. The 2026 Fold8 has a 7.6-inch inner display; the Fold8 Ultra has an 8-inch inner display. Samsung presents these models as large-screen devices for productivity and content. The practical trade-off is that you carry a folding phone with a hinge and inner display, rather than a conventional slab.

Choose an S phone if you do not need the extra canvas
If your usual phone use is messaging, browsing, photos and apps one at a time, a conventional Galaxy S may be the more natural fit. You do not need to buy into a folding design just to get an everyday smartphone. Samsung’s comparison describes the S family as having fewer moving parts because of its traditional design.
Choose a Flip for compact folded carry
The Z Flip folds into a clamshell rather than opening into a tablet-like screen. Samsung describes the 2026 Flip8 as the compact option; its Canadian specifications list a 4.1-inch cover display and a 6.9-inch inner display. This makes it a distinct choice from both the slab-style S and large-screen Fold.

Which has the better camera?
There is no family-wide answer: compare the camera hardware on the specific models you are considering. Samsung says its S models, especially Ultra models, typically offer its most advanced conventional camera systems and optical zoom. In Samsung UK’s comparison, both the Galaxy S26 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra have a 200MP wide camera and 50MP telephoto camera, while the standard Fold8 lists a 50MP wide camera and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not an independent image-quality test.
Megapixel counts alone do not establish which phone takes better photos. Samsung also points to the Fold’s ability to use Flex Mode for hands-free shooting. If camera versatility is your priority, compare the exact lenses and features on the local versions of the same generation and price tier rather than relying on the S or Z name.

What about battery life and durability?
Battery figures are not a direct S-versus-Z test
For Canadian devices, Samsung lists a 5,000mAh battery and up to 27 hours of video playback for the Fold8 Ultra; 4,800mAh and up to 26 hours for the Fold8; and 4,300mAh and up to 31 hours for the Flip8. These are Samsung’s specifications and playback claims for Canada, not results from a like-for-like independent battery test against Galaxy S models. Do not use them alone to predict which phone will last longer in your own routine.

Folding phones add a hinge and folding display
A Z Fold’s hinge and folding display are additional mechanical and display components compared with the conventional S design. Samsung Canada lists IP48 dust and water resistance and a claim of up to 200,000 folds for the Fold8 Ultra. Those are manufacturer-published specifications and claims for that model and market; they are not independent durability test results and should not be assumed to apply to every Galaxy Z phone. Check the exact model’s rating and warranty terms before buying.

How to decide between Galaxy S and Galaxy Z
- Pick Galaxy S if you prefer conventional handling and want to compare Samsung’s traditional camera-focused flagship options.
- Pick Galaxy Z Fold if you will regularly use a larger inner screen for multitasking, reading or media.
- Pick Galaxy Z Flip if compact folded carry and cover-screen interactions are more important to you than a tablet-like inner display.
- Compare exact models within the same generation and price tier, including display dimensions, weight, camera hardware, battery claims, storage, warranty and carrier configuration.
Check the local model before you buy
Samsung warns that models can vary by country. A specification or configuration listed for the UK or Canada may not describe the version sold where you live. Confirm the exact model number, storage, network and carrier configuration, warranty and current local price.
