First confirm where your friends can play and whether your progress carries over; then compare that game’s performance and features, portability, library compatibility, and full cost.
Start with friends and progress
Check cross-play and cross-progression separately for the specific game. Cross-play lets players on different platforms play together; cross-progression concerns whether saves, account progress, or purchases carry between platforms. One does not guarantee the other. Check the publisher’s current guidance for the exact edition and platform generation, and verify which matchmaking pool you will join.

For example, Electronic Arts says Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 do not support cross-play for EA SPORTS FC, while current-generation PlayStation, Xbox Series, and PC versions are grouped together. EA also describes limits on cross-progression: it is available for Ultimate Team on PlayStation, but progress does not transfer from PlayStation to Xbox. These are FC-specific rules, not a guide to other games. See EA’s EA SPORTS FC cross-play guidance.

Games can differ in the opposite direction, too. SEGA announced that Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage, released on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam, supports full cross-play among those platforms. That example shows why you should check the named game’s current platform list rather than infer compatibility from the systems alone. SEGA’s March 26, 2026 announcement also specifies rollback netcode support for that release.

Compare the actual versions of the game
Look for the developer’s platform-specific details: available graphics or performance modes, resolution and frame-rate targets, load times, online features, and any differences in content or controls. A platform’s advertised capabilities do not prove that a particular port uses them, or that it performs better than another version.
- PS5: Sony describes high-frame-rate gameplay in compatible titles and DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback in select games. Check whether the game supports those features. Sony’s PS5 feature page
- Xbox Series: Microsoft lists up to 120 FPS for Xbox Series X with supported content and a compatible display, and promotes Quick Resume. These capabilities are not guarantees about a specific game’s frame rate or implementation. Series X and Series S also differ; check the model and game’s specifications. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X page
- Switch 2: Evaluate the individual release’s image quality, controls, online behavior, storage requirements, and feature differences. The fact that a game is available on Switch 2 does not establish that its performance or features match another platform’s version. Nintendo’s Switch 2 product page
- PC: Compare the game’s requirements with your actual CPU, graphics card, memory, operating system, and display. “PC” is not one fixed performance target. Check supported settings and controller options; consider mouse and keyboard, mods, or a particular storefront only when the game supports what you want.
Decide how much portability matters
If you want to play away from a TV, Switch 2 may be the more suitable choice—but portability is useful only if that version works well for your particular needs. Confirm the game’s controls, online requirements, visual compromises, and any differences in content or features before choosing it. For a game you play only at a desk or television, weigh portability against the other factors instead of treating it as an automatic advantage.

Check your existing library and disc options
A game purchase is only part of the decision if you already own games or physical discs. Sony says more than 99 percent of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5; selected titles may also benefit from faster loading, Game Boost, or higher fidelity, but those enhancements do not apply uniformly. Microsoft says most Xbox One games are playable on Xbox Series X|S, alongside selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Xbox Series S is digital-only, so it cannot play a disc edition. Work out the full cost in your market
Compare the edition you intend to buy, not just the console or PC you already own. Include the game’s local price, any required online multiplayer membership, storage or peripherals you need, and whether physical resale or lending matters to you. The total depends on your region, edition, and existing equipment; without those details and a named game, there is no meaningful universal price winner.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use this order to make the choice
- Confirm the exact edition and platforms. Make sure the game is available on the systems you are considering, including the correct console generation or PC release.
- Check cross-play, then progression. Use the publisher’s current compatibility information to confirm both the friends you can join and what, if anything, carries over.
- Compare version-specific performance and features. Use the developer’s details for that game rather than relying on general hardware claims.
- Apply your practical priorities. Decide how important portability, existing games and discs, controller features, and your PC’s capabilities are.
- Compare the complete local cost. Account for the actual game edition, memberships, and any hardware or accessories you still need.
If cross-play with a particular friend group is essential, treat that as a requirement and rule out editions that cannot join them. If it is not, choose among the remaining versions based on the trade-offs that matter most to you. Without a named game, edition, PC configuration, and market, none of PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, or PC can be declared the overall winner.
