How to Choose Between Ocarina of Time on Switch and the Nintendo 64 Version

Choose the Switch version if you want convenience, portability, suspend points, and controls you can remap. Choose an original Nintendo 64 if you already have the console and cartridge, collect physical games, or want the complete CRT-era hardware experience. The Switch release is the Nintendo 64 game delivered through Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack; it is not a modern remake.

The right choice depends less on the game itself than on how you want to access, control, save, display, and own it.

What you are actually comparing

Both options present the Nintendo 64-era The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but they are different forms of access.

Ocarina of Time on Switch

Nintendo includes Ocarina of Time in the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics library. Playing it requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The game is accessed as part of that service rather than from a cartridge you own. Nintendo’s listing also cautions that “There are some differences in game performance and presentation as compared to the original versions of these games.”

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This release is best understood as the original game running through Nintendo’s classic-games service on Switch hardware. It adds service conveniences such as suspend points and controller remapping, but those conveniences do not turn it into a remake with redesigned graphics, levels, or story content.

The original Nintendo 64 release

The alternative is the 1998 Nintendo 64 release played from an original cartridge in an original console. You supply the hardware, game media, controller, and display chain. No Nintendo Switch Online membership is needed for that setup.

The cartridge and console are physical possessions, although their condition, completeness, and working order vary on the used market. This option preserves the behavior of the original hardware path, including the three-pronged Nintendo 64 controller and the way that console was connected to a period display.

Do not confuse this comparison with a Switch 2 remake

A separately announced Switch 2 remake is a different product from the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics release discussed here. If a store listing or video is talking about a remake, enhanced assets, or Switch 2-specific features, it is not describing the service version covered in this guide.

Switch versus Nintendo 64 at a glance

Decision factor Switch Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics Original Nintendo 64
Access Requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and a compatible Switch system. Requires a Nintendo 64 console and Ocarina of Time cartridge.
Ownership Access is tied to the service and an active membership. You possess the console and cartridge, subject to condition and maintenance.
Stopping a session Suspend points let you stop and return through the Nintendo Classics service. Uses the original game’s native save behavior and physical media.
Controllers Works with current Switch controllers; assignments can be customized. An official Nintendo 64-style Switch controller is available for the library. Uses the original Nintendo 64 controller layout and original analog-stick feel.
Rumble The official Nintendo 64-style Switch controller has built-in rumble rather than requiring the original optional Rumble Pak. Original rumble behavior depends on the Nintendo 64 controller and Rumble Pak hardware you use.
Display and presentation Runs on Switch in handheld or docked contexts supported by the system; Nintendo notes differences from original versions. Uses the original console, cartridge, cables, and display chain.
Portability Can be played on Switch hardware in handheld mode or on a television when docked. Remains attached to the console and its display setup.

Choose Switch when convenience matters most

You want a first playthrough on current hardware

Switch is the practical choice for someone who does not already own a functioning Nintendo 64 and cartridge. You can use the hardware already connected to a modern television, or play in handheld mode where supported. You avoid finding an aging console, checking cartridge condition, and arranging the original video connection.

This is particularly useful if Ocarina of Time is new to you. The game’s length makes it likely that you will play in many short sessions rather than finish it in one sitting. Suspend points make leaving and returning straightforward.

You play in short sessions

Nintendo documents suspend points for Nintendo Classics games. A suspend point is a service-level snapshot that lets you stop, leave the game, and resume later. It does not rewrite the game’s story, alter its dungeons, or replace the title’s own save design. Treat it as a convenient pause-and-return layer supplied by the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters: suspend points are not the same thing as creating an additional in-game save file. Keep using the game’s normal save behavior for progress you want to regard as part of the original experience, and use suspend points for convenience between sessions.

You need portable play

The Switch version can move between handheld and docked play using the modes supported by your Switch system. An original Nintendo 64 is fixed to its console, cables, and display. If you want to continue a session away from the television or carry the game with you, Switch is the only option of these two that is designed for that use.

You prefer modern controller ergonomics

Joy-Con and Pro Controller layouts are familiar to many current players. Nintendo’s button-assignment help says you can view the original mapping and use “Change Controls” to customize assignments for Nintendo Classics games. That lets you adapt the controls if the default placement feels awkward.

Remapping is also useful when you switch between a standard modern controller and an official Nintendo 64-style controller. You can preserve the intended mapping or make a small adjustment without changing the game itself.

Choose the original Nintendo 64 when authenticity matters most

You already own the console and cartridge

If a working Nintendo 64 and Ocarina of Time cartridge are already in your collection, the original version avoids adding a subscription requirement. Your main concerns become hardware condition, a working controller, the cartridge’s condition, and a display connection that works with your television.

For an existing owner, the cost and effort of acquiring a Switch membership and a different controller may offer little benefit unless portability or suspend points are important.

You collect physical games

The Nintendo 64 option gives you a cartridge and console you can keep independently of an online service. That is the clearest ownership difference in this comparison. Service access can depend on an active Expansion Pack membership; a physical setup does not.

Physical ownership also brings responsibilities. Used cartridges and consoles may show wear, and availability varies. Verify that a cartridge boots reliably and that the console, controller, power supply, and video connection are included and functional before treating a used-market listing as a complete setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want the original controller geometry

The Nintendo 64 controller’s three-pronged shape and central analog stick are part of how the original game was designed to be played. Some players prefer that layout for movement and camera control, even when they have access to modern controllers.

The original controller is not merely a decorative accessory: its stick position, button arrangement, and feel define the physical interaction of the N64 version. If reproducing that specific hardware experience is the priority, original Nintendo 64 hardware is the least ambiguous choice.

You care about the original display chain

A Nintendo 64 connected through the period console-and-display chain provides the baseline presentation against which Nintendo compares the Switch service version. This is relevant to CRT enthusiasts and purists who want the console, cartridge, controller, and display to be part of one historical setup.

The Switch listing explicitly warns that performance and presentation differ from the original versions. Because no single numerical figure establishes every difference across regions, televisions, and system updates, it is more accurate to describe the Switch presentation as an adaptation of the N64 game rather than promise pixel-for-pixel or behavior-for-behavior identity.

Controller choices on Switch

Joy-Con or Pro Controller

Current Switch controllers are supported by the Nintendo Classics application. Their main advantage is availability: you can begin with hardware many Switch owners already have. If the default arrangement does not suit you, Nintendo provides a “Change Controls” option for customizing assignments and a way to view the original mapping.

Remapping is a practical reason to choose Switch even when you do not care about portability. You can make the controls feel more natural to your hands without buying another console.

The official Nintendo 64-style Switch controller

Nintendo says its Nintendo 64 controller is designed to work with Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online software. It is the most relevant accessory for someone who wants the familiar control geometry while keeping Switch conveniences.

Nintendo’s controller information describes built-in rumble in this controller in place of the original optional Rumble Pak. That means you should not describe it as an exact reproduction of every electrical and mechanical property of an original controller. It is a Switch accessory designed for the classic-games service, with the recognizable layout and integrated rumble.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why an arbitrary third-party pad is not an equivalent test

The official controller guidance is specific to Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online software, and Nintendo does not guarantee support for the controller in other games. A different controller may work, but compatibility and button behavior are not established by that guidance. If control authenticity is central to your decision, compare the original Nintendo 64 controller with Nintendo’s service-focused N64-style controller rather than assuming every modern pad behaves the same way.

Saving, suspend points, and session management

How the Switch convenience works

Nintendo’s documentation describes suspend points as a feature of Nintendo Classics games. They let you stop at a chosen moment and return later through the service. This is valuable when you need to end a session immediately or play in brief intervals.

Use suspend points as a convenience layer, not as evidence that the underlying game has been redesigned. The dungeons, story progression, and original game rules remain the subject of the release.

What the original hardware does instead

The cartridge version relies on the original game’s native save behavior. There is no Nintendo Classics suspend-point interface layered over the console. Ending a session therefore means using the game’s own saving approach and then powering down the Nintendo 64 in the normal way.

Players who value a strict period experience may prefer that limitation. Players who frequently stop mid-action or play while traveling will generally find the Switch approach less disruptive.

Requirements before you choose

Switch checklist

  • A compatible Nintendo Switch system.
  • An active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership; the standard Nintendo Switch Online tier alone does not provide the Nintendo 64 library.
  • The Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application installed through the Switch service.
  • A supported controller, such as Joy-Con, Pro Controller, or Nintendo’s N64-style Switch controller.
  • A display or handheld setup appropriate to the way you intend to play.

Because the library is membership-based, confirm that the account you will use has the Expansion Pack entitlement before planning a playthrough. If the membership is no longer active, access to the service library is not the same as owning a cartridge.

Original Nintendo 64 checklist

  • An original Nintendo 64 console in working condition.
  • An Ocarina of Time cartridge that boots and saves reliably.
  • An original Nintendo 64 controller with a usable analog stick.
  • Power and video connections that work with your television or display.
  • Optional original rumble hardware if you want the Rumble Pak-era setup.

For used hardware, test the complete chain rather than checking only that the console powers on. A working system with a damaged controller or unreliable cartridge is not a ready-to-play setup.

Setup steps for each version

Starting on Switch

  1. Confirm that the Nintendo account you will use has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
  2. Open the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application on your Switch.
  3. Select The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time from the Nintendo 64 library.
  4. Connect the controller you want to use. Start with the default mapping if you want the documented original arrangement.
  5. If the layout is uncomfortable, open the controller options, view the original mapping, and select “Change Controls” to assign buttons to your preference.
  6. Use a suspend point when you need to stop quickly, while continuing to use the game’s native save behavior for ordinary progress.

Starting on original Nintendo 64

  1. Connect the Nintendo 64 to power and to a display using the cables and adapter arrangement appropriate to your television.
  2. Attach an original Nintendo 64 controller to the first controller port.
  3. Insert the Ocarina of Time cartridge and power on the console.
  4. Confirm that the game starts and that the analog stick and buttons respond normally.
  5. Play and save using the game’s native behavior; there is no service-level suspend-point menu.

How different kinds of players should decide

First-time player without N64 hardware

Choose Switch. It avoids the search for a console and cartridge, works with hardware you may already own, and adds portability, suspend points, and remapping. Add Nintendo’s N64-style Switch controller only if the original layout is important to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Collector with a complete working N64 setup

Choose the original. Your cartridge and console already provide the required access, and the physical setup matches the experience you are collecting. Switch remains useful as a convenient second way to play, but it is not necessary for ownership or access to the game you already have.

CRT enthusiast or hardware purist

Choose the original Nintendo 64. The console, cartridge, controller, and display chain are the point of the experience. Nintendo’s own warning about differences in Switch performance and presentation is enough reason not to treat the service release as a perfect hardware substitute.

Player who alternates between long and short sessions

Choose Switch if you often need to pause immediately, play away from the television, or resume on a different day without setting up the console again. Choose N64 if the ritual of using the original hardware is part of why you are playing.

Player who dislikes the standard modern layout

Choose Switch with Nintendo’s N64-style controller if you want the classic shape plus suspend points and portability. Choose original N64 if you also want the original controller’s physical feel and the rest of the period hardware chain.

Speedrunner or rules-focused player

Start with the version that matches the ruleset or community context you intend to follow. The original N64 is the straightforward choice when the hardware chain itself is part of the requirement. Switch may be more convenient for practice, but controller behavior, presentation differences, and service features should not be assumed to be interchangeable with original-hardware conditions.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Assuming the Switch release is a remake

It is not. The Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics edition is the N64-era game offered through Nintendo’s service. Do not expect modern remake assets or redesigned content simply because it runs on a current console.

Buying the wrong Nintendo Switch Online tier

The Nintendo 64 library requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Check the membership tier before downloading or planning to play; an ordinary Nintendo Switch Online membership is not the stated requirement for this library.

Expecting identical presentation

Nintendo explicitly warns about differences in performance and presentation compared with the original versions. Avoid promises about exact resolution, frame rate, latency, or image treatment when no authoritative number establishes them for your particular setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating suspend points as original save files

Suspend points are a service convenience. They do not change the game’s underlying save design. Keep that distinction in mind when deciding whether a particular stopping method fits a personal challenge, collection goal, or speedrunning rule.

Assuming every controller is supported equally

Nintendo specifically designs its N64-style Switch controller for Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online software, while support for other games is not guaranteed. A random controller that connects to Switch is not automatically equivalent to the official accessory or an original N64 controller.

Ignoring used-hardware condition

An original setup can be rewarding, but a listing’s age and appearance do not prove that the cartridge saves, the analog stick is usable, or the video connection will work with your display. Test the complete console, cartridge, controller, and cable chain before relying on it for a long playthrough.

Regional and date note

Nintendo’s Australian listing gives 26/10/2021 as the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online release date for that regional service listing. Availability, catalog presentation, and membership terms can vary by region and can change over time, so treat that date as the Australian listing’s release date rather than a universal statement about every market.

The underlying choice remains stable: Switch provides service-based access and modern convenience, while the original Nintendo 64 provides physical ownership and the authentic hardware path.
