Before you switch, check what will transfer in your exact setup flow, what may need manual work, whether your contacts’ messaging features work across platforms, and whether your carrier can activate your number or eSIM on the new phone.
Start with the ecosystem you already use
List the devices and services you rely on each day: computer, tablet, watch, cloud photo library, password manager, notes, and messaging groups. Ask which ones you want to keep working together and which you would be willing to replace. A platform is a stronger fit when it supports the routines and devices you actually use; a brand preference alone does not tell you how much switching work you will face.

Then identify the information that must arrive intact on the new phone. Contacts and photos may be essential, while app-specific history, saved credentials, or files could matter more for your own use. Use that list to check the official transfer instructions for your direction of travel, rather than assuming the two transfer routes cover the same things.

Moving from Android to iPhone
Apple’s Move from Android to iPhone or iPad instructions use Move to iOS during initial iPhone setup. Apple lists contacts, message history and SMS, camera photos and videos, albums, files and folders, accessibility and display settings, web bookmarks, mail accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history, and calendars among the content that can transfer. Some free apps may match when they are available in both stores and supported by the feature.

Music, books, and PDFs need manual transfer. If you have already completed iPhone setup, Apple says you must erase the iPhone to use the Move to iOS flow, or move content manually instead. Apple also warns that insufficient storage or an incomplete transfer can mean repeating the process, so check capacity and follow the setup instructions before relying on the new phone.
Moving from iPhone to Android
Google’s Switch From iPhone to Android Seamlessly guide distinguishes classic Wi-Fi, classic cable, and an upgraded Wi-Fi method. The supported items vary by route. The upgraded method’s listed data includes app data, call history, Google Account, files, selected-carrier eSIM, passwords and passkeys, Wi-Fi networks, and messages, among other items. It is available on select devices running Android 17 and is rolling out to more devices; Google describes availability on select Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices. Check the guide and your specific phone’s setup instructions to confirm that the method and features you want are available for your device.

WhatsApp transfer also depends on the route: Google says the upgraded flow transfers WhatsApp data separately after setup, while the classic setup flow requires a cable for WhatsApp chat transfer. Do not treat a cable as universally required; follow the method supported by the phones you are switching between.

Separate data transfer from app continuity
A transfer tool cannot guarantee that every app, purchase, or app’s internal data will work just as it did before. Google says app data transfer depends on developers using APIs provided by Google and Apple. Available free apps may transfer, but a purchased iPhone app may require contacting its developer. Subscriptions continue to be billed under the existing developer or App Store arrangement, so check how to access the subscription on the new platform and whether its billing needs attention.

Before switching, make a short list of apps where losing history or access would be costly—such as messaging, authentication, banking, or work apps—and check each app’s own migration or sign-in guidance. Confirm that you can access the account and recovery method independently of the old phone.
Decide how much cross-platform messaging matters
Ask the people you message most which services and devices they use. On iPhone, iMessage is an Apple-device messaging service with end-to-end encryption. RCS can improve cross-platform conversations with high-resolution photos and videos, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators, but eligibility and encryption depend on software and provider support.

Apple says iPhone RCS requires iOS 18 and a messaging plan from a provider that supports RCS on iPhone. Apple’s end-to-end encrypted RCS beta requires iOS 26.5 and a supporting provider; the other person’s provider must also support encryption for that conversation to be encrypted. Look for the lock or “Encrypted” indicator in the conversation. Without it, Apple says the RCS conversation is not protected from a third party reading messages in transit. SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted.
Google announced on May 11, 2026, that encrypted RCS was beginning to roll out in beta for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. Google said encryption is enabled by default and would be automatically enabled over time for new and existing RCS conversations. Rollout and eligibility can change; check the devices, apps, carriers, and indicator for the specific conversation rather than assuming encryption is available for everyone.

Confirm your number and eSIM before trading in the old phone
Number and SIM activation are practical prerequisites, not details to leave until after the old phone is gone. Apple says an Android phone number and SIM or eSIM can be activated on iPhone, but activation may require help from the carrier. Google says automatic eSIM transfer depends on carrier support and advises contacting the carrier when it is unsupported.
Before wiping, returning, or trading in your current phone, ask your carrier whether it supports activation or transfer for your exact old and new phone models, your plan, and your destination platform. Keep the old phone available until the new one can place calls, receive messages, and complete any account verification you need.
Compare individual phones only after choosing a direction
Once you know which ecosystem fits your routine and have checked the migration and messaging details, compare the particular phones you are considering. Evaluate price, hardware features, accessibility needs, and the software-support period for those exact models. There is no universal iOS-versus-Android winner established by transfer instructions or messaging documentation; these sources explain migration options, not a controlled comparison of platforms or handsets.
