Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose an AI agent for the workflow it must perform—not because a vendor calls it “industry-specific” or “general-purpose.” A specialist is often the better starting point for a repeatable process governed by domain rules and connected to industry systems. A general-purpose agent may suit work that varies across tasks, if you can provide the right context and controls. Neither label guarantees accuracy, safety, or savings: compare candidates on the same real workflow and measure the outcome before expanding.
What distinguishes industry-specific and general-purpose agents?
An industry-specific agent—also called a vertical agent—is designed or configured for a particular domain, such as healthcare, manufacturing, or insurance. Its potential advantage is fit with a defined process, terminology, rules, and the systems used to carry it out. A general-purpose, or horizontal, agent is intended to handle a wider range of tasks. It can be more flexible, but the organization may need to supply and maintain more of the context, tools, and task-specific constraints.

These are useful starting descriptions, not guarantees about a product’s capabilities. Gartner warns that “agent washing”—presenting a basic assistant as an agent—can inflate expectations. Check what the system actually does: whether it can take actions in connected systems, how it handles exceptions, and what controls and records are available.

When does a specialist make more sense?
Start with industry-specific options when the work is recurring, bounded by specialized rules, and tied to domain systems. Examples Gartner describes include parts replenishment, manufacturing analysis, equipment diagnostics, healthcare claims, workers’ compensation claims, and prior authorization. The relevant advantage is not a promise of magic accuracy; it is the possibility of completing a defined business process with appropriate domain context and integration.

Gartner analyzed 107 agentic AI deployments and forecasts that 80% of tangible agentic AI ROI by 2028 will come from specialized, domain-specific agents. That is a Gartner forecast, not measured realized ROI or a prediction of what any particular buyer will achieve. Gartner also advises organizations to scale successful domain-specific agents into enterprise-wide deployments for cross-functional workflows.
When is a general-purpose agent worth evaluating?
Include a general-purpose agent when tasks vary widely, flexibility and reuse across functions matter, or one system might serve multiple workflows. This can be a reasonable choice where enterprise context can be provided safely and actions can be bounded to the task’s risk.

Production evidence is still limited. IBM Research’s 2026 report describes a business-process outsourcing talent-acquisition pilot in which its generalist CUGA agent approached specialized-agent accuracy in preliminary evaluations. IBM suggests possible development-time and cost reductions, but says evidence of generalist agents in production enterprise settings remains limited. The evaluation benchmark covered 26 tasks across 13 analytics endpoints; that describes the benchmark, not 26 organizations or proof of broad production parity.

| Decision axis | A specialist may fit when… | A general-purpose agent may fit when… | Verify in a pilot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workflow | The process recurs, with stable steps and domain rules. | Tasks vary and require flexible delegation. | Completion on representative tasks, exception handling, and recovery. |
| Context | The system has relevant domain data, terminology, and rules. | Your organization can supply and maintain context across tasks. | Grounding quality, data freshness, access boundaries, and unsupported answers. |
| Integration | Deep connections to a particular industry platform or process matter. | Broad tools or cross-functional systems matter more. | Setup effort, supported interfaces, permissions, and failure handling. |
| Risk and oversight | The process has auditable rules and clear approval points. | Tasks are low-risk or can be tightly bounded and reviewed. | Logs, approvals, stop controls, rollback options, and escalation. |
| Economics | Automation could reduce a measurable workflow cost or delay at scale. | One flexible system might replace several narrow tools, if measurement supports it. | Total cost, including licenses, usage, integration, maintenance, and human review. |
| Flexibility and lock-in | Domain depth outweighs dependence on a vendor or system. | Reuse across use cases and portability are priorities. | Data portability, model and tool substitution, customization limits, and exit costs. |
Also assess data quality, interoperability, privacy, security, monitoring, auditability, and ownership of failures. The MIT AI Agent Index annotated 45 fields per system using public information; its research team did not experimentally test system behavior or run benchmarks. Treat such documentation as a way to identify questions, not proof that a product will perform well in your environment.

- Specify one workflow. Write down its trigger, inputs, decisions, actions, exceptions, and intended outcome. If steps and domain rules are mostly fixed, evaluate specialist systems first; if tasks vary widely, include a general-purpose option.
- Check the foundations. Confirm data quality, system access, APIs, identity and permissions, privacy controls, logging, and who owns failures. Gartner identifies weak data and architecture foundations as barriers; Capgemini highlights interoperability, data readiness, privacy, and security.
- Set action limits and approvals. Decide which actions may run automatically, which require approval, and how a person can intervene. Gartner warns that removing human oversight can lead to context loss, goal drift, and compounding mistakes.
- Test the same cases. Use representative inputs, edge cases, and known failure conditions for each candidate where possible. Compare task completion, accuracy against a human-checked reference, severity-weighted errors, escalation rate, end-to-end time, and total cost. These are recommended evaluation measures, not results reported by the cited sources.
- Scale only demonstrated workflows. Expand a successful narrow process deliberately. Monitor for agent sprawl, API and token costs, changing data, and process drift—risks Gartner identifies.
What trust and reliability evidence can—and cannot—tell you
In Capgemini Research Institute’s 2025 survey, 897 executives from corporate and data/AI functions who did not trust AI agents were asked what could improve trust. Demonstrated accuracy and reliability ranked first, at 52%, followed by explanations and transparency, at 45%. These are survey responses, not evidence that any particular agent is accurate or reliable. Your pilot should test the specific failure modes and review requirements of your process.

There is no established universal accuracy or ROI winner between the two categories. A credible decision depends on the workflow, the system connections and controls available, and results measured in your own setting.
