Use your phone’s system photo picker to give an AI photo assistant only the images you choose. If you previously granted broader access, review the app’s Photos or media permission in Settings and reduce or revoke it. These controls limit what the app can reach on your device; they do not determine how the assistant stores or uses images after you submit them.
Use the system photo picker for a one-time upload
When the assistant offers your phone’s built-in photo picker, choose only the photo or photos needed for the task. This is usually the narrowest convenient way to share an image without granting ongoing access to the entire library.

Apple says photo pickers let people choose which photos to share while keeping the rest of the library private. Android Developers describes its Photo Picker as a way to grant access to selected images and videos instead of the entire media library. Those protections apply to the selection made through the platform picker; they do not establish what an AI service does with an image after it is uploaded.
Limit access on iPhone
Choose photos when the assistant opens the picker
Select only the images you need in the system picker. Apple’s photo-picker privacy guidance explains that this selection keeps the rest of the library private from the app through the picker flow.

Change an app’s existing Photos permission
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos.
- Tap the AI photo assistant in the app list.
- Choose a more limited option, such as selected or limited access, or choose no access. Available labels can vary by iOS version and app.
Apple distinguishes limited photo-library authorization from full authorization in its developer documentation. A limited grant is not the same as access to the full library.
Review permission and network activity
To review how apps use granted permissions and their network activity, open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report. Apple’s App Privacy Report guidance describes what the report can show. It is not a complete audit of what an AI company retains or does with images on its servers.

Limit access on Android
Use Android Photo Picker for selected images
For a one-off upload, select the intended photo or photos through Android’s system Photo Picker. Android says the picker provides access to selected images and videos without requiring runtime storage permissions for picker use. Depending on the app and workflow, selected media may be available through temporary read access; do not assume the app has permanent access to the rest of the library.

Review an app that already has photo or media access
- Open your device’s Settings and find the assistant under Apps.
- Open its Permissions page and look for a permission named Photos, Photos and videos, or similar.
- Reduce access to selected media if that option is available, or deny the permission if you do not want the app to browse device media.
There is no single menu path that applies to every Android phone: manufacturers change Settings labels and layouts. Android 14 introduced Selected Photos Access for apps targeting API level 34 or later, but the experience depends on the device’s OS version, the app’s target SDK, and whether the app implements the permission flow. Android’s selected photos access guidance explains those dependencies.
Select backed-up Google Photos items in the system picker
On Android 13 or later, Google Photos users can enable backed-up items in the system picker: open Google Photos, tap Profile > Photos Settings > Apps & devices > Google Photos access > photo picker. This allows selection of backed-up items without giving the third-party assistant full access to the Google Photos library. See Google’s photo picker help.

What these controls do—and do not—protect
- They control device-library access. A picker selection or reduced permission limits which local media the app can access through that route.
- They do not undo a completed upload. Revoking photo access does not delete an image already sent to the assistant.
- They do not set server retention or AI-use rules. Check the particular assistant’s current privacy policy and settings to understand storage, human review, and model-improvement practices.
- A request for broad access is not proof of malicious behavior. If a task appears to need one image but the app insists on full-library access, consider a picker-based workflow or another tool.
