Choose a graphics card by comparing specific Radeon and GeForce models for the work you actually do—not by picking a brand first. For gaming, compare recent results in your games at your target resolution, then factor in price, ray tracing, upscaling, memory, and power. For creative software or local AI, check compatibility and benchmarks for the exact application. Prices and rankings change, so a value recommendation is only meaningful for a particular market and date.
Start with your workload and budget
Set a firm budget using current prices where you live, then list the tasks the card must handle. A gaming-focused shortlist may not suit a creator or local AI workload, and a card that benchmarks well may still be a poor buy if it costs more locally or does not fit your system.

- Gaming: Identify your main games, resolution, graphics settings, and whether you care about ray tracing or upscaling.
- Creative work: Name the application and tasks, such as rendering, video encoding, or editing. “Creator performance” is too broad to predict from the GPU brand alone.
- Local AI: Check the framework, model size, memory requirement, and task-specific performance for the software you plan to run.
- Upgrade: Confirm the card will physically fit and that your power supply and case can support the exact model.
AMD’s current gaming guidance positions the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, each listed with 16 GB GDDR6, and the RX 9060 XT in 1440p discussions. It presents the RX 9060 XT as a 1080p option and lists versions with either 8 GB or 16 GB GDDR6. These are AMD’s product-positioning statements, not independent proof that a card is the best choice at a given resolution. AMD’s Radeon gaming guidance

For gaming, compare the same games at your resolution
Look for recent tests that compare the specific cards you can buy using the same games, resolution, settings, and test conditions. Compare average frame rates and 1% lows when available: average FPS indicates typical throughput, while 1% lows help show how smooth play remains during slower moments. Do not combine results from unrelated test suites into a single ranking.
Then decide whether ray tracing and image reconstruction matter in the games you play. Compare performance with those features enabled, and check game support and image quality rather than assuming that a feature name guarantees the same result across titles. For budget gaming, weigh the results against the card’s current local price, memory capacity, and power requirements. A close performance result can have a different value outcome when prices or stock change. ComputerBase’s 2026 test suite covers GeForce RTX 5000 and 4000, Radeon RX 9000 and 7000, and Intel Arc products; its update history notes that changes to games, drivers, and upscaling altered rankings compared with earlier tests, with additions through July 2026. Use a recent, consistent test set rather than relying on a brand-level rule or an old ranking. ComputerBase’s 2026 GPU test suite
For ray tracing and upscaling, check your games’ support
If ray tracing is a priority, compare the cards with ray tracing enabled in the games you actually play. Also check which upscaling features those games support and whether you prefer the resulting image and performance tradeoff. Vendor feature lists establish what a product supports; they do not establish that one card will perform better in every game.

For creative software, evaluate the exact application
There is no single “creator” workload. Rendering, video editing, encoding, and other applications can depend on different features and can favor different cards. Check the software’s supported features, memory needs, encode or decode requirements, and independent benchmarks for the specific task and application version.

Nvidia’s comparison lists CUDA capability and Tensor Cores by GeForce generation, as well as NVENC generations and AV1 encoding support for RTX 40 and RTX 50 series. For local AI, verify software, memory, and task speed
Start with the framework and model you intend to run. Confirm that the software supports the card, that the available memory can accommodate your workload, and that benchmarks measure the same task. Brand-level claims and accelerator features cannot tell you whether a particular model will fit or how quickly your application will run.

Make a shortlist, then check current evidence
- Choose your task and target: Write down your main workload, gaming resolution if relevant, desired settings, and budget in your local market.
- Find comparable candidates: Include specific Radeon and GeForce cards that are actually available at prices you would pay.
- Compare relevant tests: Use recent benchmarks for the same games or application tasks, with matching settings and conditions. For games, include the features and resolution you expect to use.
- Check constraints: Compare memory capacity, software support, power needs, connectors, and physical dimensions against your requirements.
- Recheck the price before buying: A price change can shift which card offers better value, so avoid treating an old budget-category ranking as current.
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 buying guide evaluates gaming, productivity, and AI and notes that price volatility can move cards between budget categories. It describes the AMD RX 9070 GRE as strong value for 1440p gaming at the price discussed in that guide, while noting tradeoffs in AI and creator performance and DLSS feature and game support. That assessment applies to its tested guide context, not every Radeon or GeForce card or today’s prices. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 graphics-card guide
What a useful buying verdict looks like
A sound recommendation names the card, workload, resolution or application, market, current price, and benchmark basis. Without those details, “AMD is better value” or “Nvidia is faster” is too broad to guide a purchase. Revisit recent like-for-like results and local prices when you are ready to buy.
