What to Do If an Unauthenticated Attacker Accessed Files in Your Atlassian Instance

Atlassian’s CVE-2026-21589 affects listed Data Center products. Learn how to identify exposure, patch, apply temporary mitigations, and investigate access logs without treating a match as proof of compromise.

First, identify whether your installation is Atlassian Cloud or an affected Data Center product. Atlassian’s CVE-2026-21589 advisory, released 5 October 2026, says affected Cloud products were patched, its investigation found no evidence of exploitation, and Cloud customers do not need to take action for this advisory. If you run an affected Data Center product, restrict external access where possible, patch to a fixed version or later, and have your security team investigate access logs. A log match warrants investigation; it does not by itself prove that a file was successfully read.

Start by identifying your deployment

CVE-2026-21589 concerns Atlassian Data Center products. Confirm the product, deployment model, installed version, internet exposure, and—if applicable—whether every cluster node and mirror is accounted for before choosing a response.

  • Atlassian Cloud: Atlassian says affected Cloud products have been patched, its investigation found no evidence of exploitation, and no Cloud customer action is required for this advisory. This is Atlassian’s assessment; it does not establish the status of a separate Data Center deployment your organization may operate.
  • Data Center: Bitbucket, Confluence, Jira Service Management, Jira Software, Bamboo, Crowd, Crucible, and Fisheye are in scope. Atlassian lists all versions as affected, so check the fixed-version table below against the release line you actually run.

Atlassian rates the issue Critical, CVSS 9.3 (CVSS 4.0 vector). That is the vendor’s severity rating, not a determination that a particular customer’s instance was accessed. The vulnerability is unauthenticated file access within the web application root. An attacker must already know the exact name and path of a target file; the flaw does not permit directory listing or enumeration. Certain configurations may contain sensitive files, so the possible impact depends in part on what files are present.

What to do first on an affected Data Center instance

1. Restrict exposure

If the instance is publicly accessible, restrict external network access as soon as practicable—even if users normally need to authenticate. Atlassian recommends removing affected instances from the internet until they are patched or mitigated where possible. If you cannot take the service offline, use the strongest practical network restriction while coordinating the change with your service owners.

2. Patch to a fixed release

Install the fixed version listed for your product and release line, or a later version. Check Atlassian’s live CVE-2026-21589 advisory before changing production: version guidance can change, and the table is not a substitute for confirming the correct upgrade path for your installation.

Product Fixed versions listed by Atlassian
Bitbucket Data Center 9.4.26, 10.2.8, 10.5.1
Confluence Data Center 9.2.26, 10.2.19
Jira Service Management Data Center 5.12.40, 10.3.26, 11.3.12
Jira Software Data Center 9.12.40, 10.3.26, 11.3.12
Bamboo Data Center 10.2.24, 12.1.12
Crowd Data Center 6.3.7, 7.0.3, 7.1.7, 7.2.4
Crucible 4.9.15
Fisheye 4.9.15

3. Treat filtering as a temporary bridge if you cannot patch immediately

Atlassian describes temporary mitigations, but the applicable option depends on the product and deployment. A WAF or proxy rule is described for all affected products. The advisory also provides a Tomcat RewriteValve approach for Confluence, Jira Service Management, Jira Software, Bamboo, and Crowd, and a urlrewrite.xml rule for Bitbucket. Follow the vendor’s product-specific instructions rather than pasting a rule into production without validation.

For the application-level configuration approaches, Atlassian instructs operators to back up configuration, apply the change to each Data Center node, and restart the node. For Bitbucket clusters, the rule must be applied to every node and to mirror or mirror-farm nodes, followed by a restart. A WAF or proxy rule needs to be tested in the technology you actually use, including for URL-encoded traversal patterns. Keep any mitigation temporary and proceed with patching.

When choosing an interim measure, consider which product is affected, whether you can apply it consistently to every node and mirror, how quickly you can restrict external access, whether your filter handles encoded paths correctly, and how soon a fixed release can be installed. These controls are not interchangeable across products.

How to check whether your instance was accessed

Atlassian says it cannot determine whether a specific customer instance was affected and asks customers to investigate their own affected instances. Have your security team review access logs covering the exposure period and preserve relevant logs and evidence under your normal incident-handling process.

The advisory describes two ways to search request lines:

Rank #3
GL.iNet GL-MT5000 Brume 3 Wired VPN Security Gateway NO Wi-Fi
  • 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
  • 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
  • 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
  • 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
  • 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles
  1. URL-decode each access-log request line up to two times. Check for .. immediately adjacent to /, \, or ::.
  2. Alternatively, search the raw, non-decoded log lines using the regular expression in Atlassian’s advisory.

Do not treat a matching request as proof of a successful file read. The advisory does not say that a match alone establishes success, identify which customer files were accessed, or determine whether any exposed data was later used. Correlate suspicious requests with available application, proxy, and security evidence to establish what happened. If you find activity that may indicate exploitation, keep the investigation open until the evidence supports a conclusion.

Assess what may have been exposed before changing credentials

This advisory describes file access; it does not state that customer passwords, sessions, or API tokens were compromised. Do not rotate every credential solely on the basis of the advisory. If your investigation finds that a token may have been exposed or detects suspicious token activity, an organization administrator can review Atlassian Administration > Insights > API token activity and revoke the relevant token or tokens. Revocation permanently deletes a token and cannot be undone. Base any additional credential or session actions on the files and activity your investigation identifies.

Escalate and handle communications carefully

For questions or concerns about CVE-2026-21589, Atlassian directs customers to raise a support request. Involve your internal security and service teams so that containment, patching, evidence preservation, and service restoration are coordinated.

Atlassian describes its incident response as a process of detection and analysis, severity categorization, containment and recovery, notification where relevant, and post-incident review. It says it aims to notify a customer without undue delay if that customer’s data is involved in a confirmed incident; details may initially be limited and expanded as they become available. Those statements describe Atlassian’s process. They do not determine whether your organization has separate legal or contractual notification obligations.
